Top 5 Restaurant Market Integrators - Commercial Integrator

August 14, 2013 | by Jessica Camerato

The upside of the restaurant market is the number of opportunities for integrators to cross over from residential work to into the commercial industry. That?s also the downside. Integrators have to stay innovative, creative, and focused to succeed in the restaurant market among those fighting for a piece of the pie (no pun intended).

These CI Industry Leaders have found winning formulas. They differ in size from four to 130 employees, one to eight locations, and eight to 26 years in business, yet they have all found unique ways to thrive in the vertical.

While Home Entertainment, Inc. has residential roots, the small firm (four employees) leverages its strategic partners for security, programming, control systems and other solutions. ?The biggest challenge we have had to overcome in moving into the commercial market is our name,? says Home Entertainment Inc. president Kevin Buchanan. ?Our success is due to original thinking and unique system designs.

CompView?s General Manager for California, Tom Yerkes, highlights previous experience working with general contractors building facilities and experience working with the military (including GSA pricing and security clearance) as his keys to success in the restaurant industry. The company has also built solutions to address high turnover rates in restaurant and bar staff. CompView developed a user-friendly interface that allows for easy training to operate the A/V system regardless of their experience level with such systems.

DSI Entertainment places a strong emphasis on growth and a search for ?quality people? in the company.

Casaplex also looks internally, noting its IT, web development and R&D divisions. For its work at the Gryphon Lounge in Washington, D.C., Casaplex designed a solution with a Crestron DigitalMedia HD video switching system and a customized interface to control the 31 TVs throughout the space.

Advanced, which operates its vertical divisions as separate business entities, has incorporated its success in the other markets into the restaurant industry. Its installation of a 5x5 video wall in a Jack Astor?s Bar and Grill (a Canadian chain restaurant) location is one example of this approach.

?Advanced is constantly proposing new and innovative technologies to forward-thinking restaurant owners,? said Advanced co-president David Weatherhead. ?Often we take successes we?ve had in the corporate or retail markets and try to translate those A/V footprints into a restaurant environment. For example, a 4x4 or 5x5 video wall is not unheard of in the corporate market, but when you place them into a restaurant it can give an owner an immediate edge over their competitors. It creates a ?wow moment? customers remember.?

Competition isn?t going away; 43.9 percent of integrators said they expect their restaurant/bar business to be up in 2013, but as these five companies have proved, there are ways to stand out from the rest.
