Low-power use for mobile devices: 60 GHz radio frequency chip

Mar. 29, 2013 ? As the capacity of handheld devices increases to accommodate a greater number of functions, these devices have more memory, larger display screens, and the ability to play higher definition video files. If the users of mobile devices, including smartphones, tablet PCs, and notebooks, want to share or transfer data on one device with that of another device, a great deal of time and effort are needed.

As a possible method for the speedy transmission of large data, researchers are studying the adoption of gigabits per second (Gbps) wireless communications operating over the 60 gigahertz (GHz) frequency band. Some commercial approaches have been introduced for full-HD video streaming from a fixed source to a display by using the 60 GHz band. But mobile applications have not been developed yet because the 60 GHz radio frequency (RF) circuit consumes hundreds of milliwatts (mW) of DC power.

Professor Chul Soon Park from the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and his research team recently developed a low-power version of the 60 GHz radio frequency integrated circuit (RFIC). Inside the circuit are an energy-efficient modulator performing amplification as well as modulation and a sensitivity-improved receiver employing a gain boosting demodulator.

The research team said that their RFIC draws as little as 67 mW of power in the 60 GHz frequency band, consuming 31mW to send and 36mW to receive large volumes of data. RFIC is also small enough to be mounted on smartphones or notebooks, requiring only one chip (its width, length, and height are about 1 mm) and one antenna (4x5x1 mm3) for sending and receiving data with an integrated switch.

Professor Park, Director of the Intelligent Radio Engineering Center at KAIST, gave an upbeat assessment of the potential of RFIC for future applications:

"What we have developed is a low-power 60-GHz RF chip with a transmission speed of 10.7 gigabits per second. In tests, we were able to stream uncompressed full-HD videos from a smartphone or notebook to a display without a cable connection. Our chip can be installed on mobile devices or even on cameras so that the devices are virtually connected to other devices and able to exchange large data with each other."

Southampton beats Chelsea 2-1 in Premier League

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:02 p.m. ET March 30, 2013

SOUTHAMPTON, England (AP) -Rickie Lambert scored for the 14th time in his first Premier League season as Southampton beat Chelsea 2-1 on Saturday to edge closer to securing its status in the top flight.

The highest scoring Englishman in the league this season struck from a free kick in the 35th minute only two minutes after Chelsea captain John Terry had cancelled out Jay Rodriguez's 23rd-minute opening goal at St. Mary's Stadium.

After also beating Liverpool last round, Southampton rose two spots to 13th, four points above the relegation zone with seven matches left.

The result endangers Chelsea's bid to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League. The reigning European champions are only two points ahead of fifth-place Arsenal after their first league loss in five weeks.

Tips To Make Your Travels More Memorable

This article will give you advice on how to have a pleasant trip, whether you are traveling to visit relatives, or to go on a cruise. Take the time to plan your vacation according to this advice for a truly relaxing experience.

Make sure to research the current status of social and political events and occurrences in the foreign country you'll be visiting. The Consular Affairs Bureau has a regularly updated list of potential situations that could be dangerous for foreign travelers. This resource can help keep you out of situations that may threaten your well-being.

It is not uncommon to provide the housekeeper and bell hop with a tip. For these services, a good tip for housekeeping would be from $2-$5 per day, and $1 per bag of luggage. If you treat the staff well, then they will treat you well.

Prior to booking your hotel you should read reviews of the different resorts or hotels you are considering. This is the easiest way to save yourself a bad traveling experience. Customer reviews and feedback that is overwhelmingly negative is usually a good indicator of somewhere to avoid.

When taking a vacation abroad, bring along local currency so you have money to spend right away. You do not want to find yourself stranded late at night with no way to exchange your money. Many banks can offer currency exchange before you depart or most airports have a currency exchange that you can use prior to getting on the plane. That way you can enjoy yourself and not worry upon arrival.

Brush your dogs prior to putting them in your car when going on a trip. This helps to cut down on how much hair will blow around the car. Make sure to pack dog essentials, like water and food bowls, along with waste bags for your dog.

Travel with bottled water when traveling outside of the country. Because other countries do not purify their water, you can get many illnesses from drinking it. Do not forget to use bottled water for teeth brushing as well. Tap water can still make you sick this way.

When traveling by air, wear lightweight, comfortable shoes that can be easily slipped on and off. You might have to take them off quickly for security checks. Also, being comfortable is key during travel, to keep you from getting too tired and stressed. You don't need a lot of support for a little walking and a lot of sitting. Wearing sandals like flip flops or Crocs is a great way to stay comfortable on your flight.

Anytime you are traveling, be aware of all your belongings the entire time. If you have a purse with you, keep it close to your body at all times. Do not carry a bag with easy access to any of the pockets. When you are buying a bag keep these things in mind.

Always bring an extra pair of glasses on your trip. In doing this, you have a readily accessible spare pair in case your primary ones are damaged. Pack them with your regular luggage, not your carry-on, so they won't risk being stolen.

Follow these tips and your next vacation should be the relaxing trip you dreamed of. Can you start making a list and preparing for your upcoming trip now?

My Purchases Shows You the Android Apps You've Bought (Because Google Won't)Android (2.2+): For whatever reason, Google can't or won't filter the apps you've installed in your orders & settings to show just the paid-for apps. If you want to see what you've spent, for guilt or accounting purposes, the My Purchases app does the job.

My Purchases could definitely stand to improve in its next few updates. There only a few minimal options, to filter out canceled purchases or apps you have installed at that moment. And the only sorting is reverse chronological, though the app did catch everything I had bought from my primary account. For those simply looking to check up on their buying history, it's an app that does just what it should.

My Purchases' free version has advertising, while the $1.29 paid version removes the advertising.

Update: Whoops! Looks like we already posted this app yesterday. Sorry about the duplicate news, everyone!

Gun control backers struggle to win some Democrats

WASHINGTON (AP) ? It would seem a lobbyist's dream: rounding up votes for a proposal backed by more than 8 in 10 people in polls. Yet, gun control supporters are struggling to win over moderate Democrats in their drive to push expanded background checks for firearms purchasers through the Senate next month.

Backed by a $12 million TV advertising campaign financed by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, gun control groups scheduled rallies around the country Thursday aimed at pressuring senators to back the effort. President Barack Obama was meeting at the White House with gun violence victims.

Moderate Senate Democrats like Mark Pryor of Arkansas and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota are shunning Bloomberg as a meddling outsider while stressing their allegiance to their own voters' views and to gun rights. While saying they're keeping an open mind and support keeping guns from criminals and people with mental disorders, many Democrats are avoiding specific commitments they might regret later.

"I do not need someone from New York City to tell me how to handle crime in our state. I know that we can go after and prosecute criminals without the need to infringe upon the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding North Dakotans," Heitkamp said this week, citing the constitutional right to bear arms.

Heitkamp does not face re-election next year, but Pryor and five other Senate Democrats from Republican-leaning or closely divided states do. All six, from Southern and Western states, will face voters whose deep attachment to guns is unshakeable ? not to mention opposition from the still potent National Rifle Association should they vote for restrictions the NRA opposes.

"We have a politically savvy and a loyal voting bloc, and the politicians know that," said Andrew Arulanandam, spokesman for the NRA, which claims nearly 5 million paying members.

The heart of the Senate gun bill will be expanded requirements for federal background checks for gun buyers, the remaining primary proposal pushed by Obama and many Democrats since 20 first-graders and six women were shot to death in December at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada already has given up any hope of winning majority support for reimposing a ban on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines for ammunition.

Today, the background checks apply only to sales by the nation's roughly 55,000 federally licensed gun dealers. Not covered are private transactions like those at gun shows and online. The Senate measure is still evolving as Sens. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Mark Kirk, R-Ill., use Congress' two-week recess to negotiate for additional support in both parties.

Expanding background checks to include gun show sales got 84 percent support in an Associated Press-GfK poll earlier this year. Near universal background checks have received similar or stronger support in other national polls.

Polls in some Southern states have been comparable. March surveys by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute found more than 9 in 10 people in Florida and Virginia backing expanded background checks, the same margin found by an Elon University Poll in North Carolina in February.

Analysts say people support more background checks because they consider it an extension of the existing system. That doesn't translate to unvarnished support from lawmakers, in part because the small but vocal minorities who oppose broader background checks and other gun restrictions tend to be driven voters that politicians are reluctant to alienate.

"It's probably true that intense, single-issue gun voters have been more likely to turn out than folks who want common-sense gun laws," said Mark Glaze, director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the group that Bloomberg helps lead. Glaze, however, said he believes that has changed somewhat since Newtown and other recent mass shootings.

Several moderate Democrats are holding back as they assess the political landscape. They're also waiting to see exactly what the Senate will consider.

Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, said Wednesday his state's voters tell him, "Don't take away our rights, our individual rights, our guns." Begich said he opposes a strict proposal requiring background checks for nearly all gun sales but will wait to see whether there is a bipartisan compromise he can support.

The problems faced by gun control supporters go beyond the challenge of winning moderate Democrats. GOP opponents are sure to force Democrats to get 60 of the Senate's 100 votes to win, and there are only 53 Democrats plus two independents who generally support them.

Also targeted by Bloomberg's ads are 10 Republicans, including Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, home of ex-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was severely wounded in a mass shooting; the retiring Saxby Chambliss of Georgia; and moderate Susan Collins of Maine.

In another indicator of hurdles facing gun control forces, the Senate voted 50-49 last week to require 60 votes for any legislation narrowing gun rights. The proposal lost because 60 votes in favor were required, but six Democrats voted for the proposal, offered by conservative Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah.

"It confirms there's no such thing as an easy gun vote," said Jim Kessler, a senior vice president of the centrist Democratic group Third Way.

Underscoring the uncertainty about moderate Democrats:

?Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., is "still holding conversations with Virginia stakeholders and sorting through issues on background checks" and proposals to ban assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines, spokesman Kevin Hal said.

?Pryor said of Bloomberg's ads: "I don't take gun advice from the mayor of New York City. I listen to Arkansans." Spokesman Michael Teague said Pryor opposes universal background checks but could favor expanding the requirement to gun show sales.

?Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C., told the Greensboro News & Record she favors expanded background checks, but said her vote would depend on the measure's details. Sen. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., answered, "Yes," when the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette asked whether he supports gun show background checks.

The gun bill also increases penalties for illegal gun sales and slightly boosts aid for school safety.

More abrupt changes like an assault weapons ban generally get slight majorities in polls. Democratic leaders decided to omit it from the Senate bill because such a provision lacks enough votes.

Orthopaedic surgeons have debated the effectiveness of the single versus double-bundle method of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair for years. However new data shows both techniques lead to similarly effective outcomes for patients, according to researchers presenting their work today at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine's Specialty Day in Chicago, IL.

"We examined 98 patients who underwent reconstructions to repair ruptured ACLs using either one of these methods after two years," commented lead researcher Mattias Ahldn, MD, of Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Mlndal, Sweden. "Using the pivot shift test to determine knee instability, 79% of the double bundle group and 67% of the single-bundle group showed normal knee function, a relatively minor difference."

The patients studied, ranging in age from 18-52, opted for ACL reconstructions after contact-sport injuries. The sample was comparable in terms of gender, time between injury and reconstruction, and length of follow-up period.

"Our study was not intended to show the overall effectiveness of ACL surgery, but instead determine if one surgical approach is better than another in promoting a return to normal activity," noted Ahldn. "The data shows that in fact multiple surgical approaches can help patients enjoy a return to normalcy after knee injuries."

The study did not examine long-term effects of ACL injury recovery such as osteoarthritis in patients' knees as it related to single and double bundle techniques.

(AP) ? Build a state university in the swamplands of south Florida. Move the athletic program to the highest level in college sports and hire a self-made millionaire basketball coach. When his team makes the NCAA tournament, say in Year 2 of its eligibility, beat a tradition-rich opponent like a Georgetown.

That is Florida Gulf Coast University's formula for success.

It took 16 years, and now the school from south Florida is the talk of March Madness.

"Fort Myers is kind of rocking and rolling right now," FGCU forward Eddie Murray said Saturday, less than 24 hours after the No. 15 Eagles beat second-seeded Georgetown 78-68. "They're really excited. This is a big thing for the city and I'm glad we could deliver this."

It was one heck of a delivery.

Suddenly, a school with an enrollment of about 12,000, whose first graduating class wore the caps and gowns in 2001, is getting national attention because of a basketball team loaded with players whose best recruiting offers were from conferences like the Atlantic 10 and Missouri Valley.

The teenagers bought into the pitch from Andy Enfield, a coach made millions starting up a document imaging and contract management company in the health care industry, and who happens to be married to former supermodel Amanda Marcum. They have three children.

Hard to argue with that kind of salesman.

"Yes, we sold this vision," said Enfield, who has also spent time as an assistant coach in the NBA and at Florida State, and has been a shooting consultant for several NBA players. "It wasn't play San Diego State in the (third) round on a Sunday in Philadelphia, it was a vision of success, it was a vision of ... what they could expect in the classroom, off the court and on the basketball court. That's the vision we sell, and I think that's most recruiting. You have to let players know what they should expect from you during their time at school."

Enfield's motto is simple and he's lived up to it.

"I aim for the stars," he said.

Right now he's taking the team and the school with him.

"The biggest thing he's given me has just been confidence," Murray said. "There have been things technique-wise but the biggest thing has definitely been confidence."

The Eagles (25-10) put on a classic performance against Georgetown, putting on an offensive display unlike any seen against the Hoyas this season. Their 21-2 run in the second half stunned and delighted the sellout crowd at the Wells Fargo Center, and their ability to hold off final charge by the Big East team, sold the fans on the legitimacy of the win.

"Early on in the game I kind of thought that more people would be going for the underdog, but they weren't really too vocal in the beginning," Murray said. "As we started getting a couple of dunks here and there, knocking down a couple of 3s and going on a big run against Georgetown, the crowd really started to erupt, become more vocal. The place really started rocking there for a while. Yeah, all these people in Philadelphia have really come to like our team and are rooting for us."

So is a lot of the country, despite the Eagles shattering bracket sheets.

"I've received congratulatory message and advice from other coaches, people in the media, family, friends, people I haven't seen or heard from in 20 years," Enfield said, estimating his phone had 450 text messages ? and counting.

While Fort Myers and nearby Naples may be known for their retirement communities, the area also has some good golf courses, wetland areas ? and the wildlife that comes with them.

"You would see wild animals crossing the road," said Murray, a local who grew up about 20 miles away from the FGCU campus. "Personally, I've seen everything from wild boar, bobcats and, of course, alligators."

That didn't deter the students ? and basketball players ? from attending school on a campus just a few minutes from the Gulf of Mexico that has dorms overlooking a beach on a lake.

"I'm from Orlando, so even being from Florida, a lot of people that I'm close to, they didn't even know where Florida Gulf Coast was or they never heard of it," said Sherwood Brown, the Atlantic Sun player of the year, who led the Eagles against Georgetown with 24 points.

One person who knows something about FGCU is Steve Fisher, the coach of San Diego State (23-10), which will face the Eagles with a berth in the Sweet 16 at stake. A No. 15 seed has never made it to the regional semifinals, while the Aztecs are looking to do it for the second time in three seasons.

"I probably knew more than any coach in America about them because I've got a condo that I've had from my days in the Midwest in Fort Myers Beach, a stone's throw from Florida Gulf Coast," said Fisher, who coached Michigan to the 1989 national championship and two other Final Four appearances.

"I read all about them starting sports. I went over to the campus. I've been on the campus. I've toured it.

"They're good. I think it's legitimate."

Fisher said the low seeding and the short history has nothing to do with this team.

"If we were playing a shirts and skins game with all 64 teams and you brought all the teams out there and watched them warm up, you'd be hard pressed to say, 'Well, this is a team that's not supposed to win,'" he said. "They're good. They're talented. They're well-coached. And they played terrific last night."

The Aztecs broke open their 70-55 win over Oklahoma with a late run behind Jamal Franklin, who leads the San Diego State in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals.

"We can't get ahead to the Elite 8 or the Sweet 16," Franklin said. "Tomorrow is Sunday and that brings Florida Gulf Coast in our path and we've got to worry about playing a good team and we've got to worry about getting that win."

Newer SLAP tear surgery gives military personnel hope for return to ...

CHICAGO, IL ? Research presented today at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine's Specialty Day in Chicago, IL shows that biceps tenodesis surgery is safe and effective for individuals who suffer a SLAP (superior labral anterior posterior) tear of the shoulder. Patients examined had previously undergone unsuccessful arthroscopic repair for their injuries.

"Our research focused on a sample of 42 active-duty men and women who were unable to return to duty after primary arthroscopic SLAP repair," said Frank McCormick, MD, and CDR Matthew T. Provencher, MD, MC, USN, lead authors of the study, from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. "After performing the more traditional biceps tenodesis surgery, (81%) of patients returned to pre-injury level of activity and were able to return to active duty."

None of the patients in the study reported a failure after their secondary, revision surgery and all reported significant improvement in their shoulder range of motion, from a mean of 142 degrees of abduction to 165 degrees at final follow-up. The patients had initially demonstrated an inability to lift, perform push-ups and do overhead activities after their failed primary surgeries.

"While our research focused on military personnel, we believe acknowledging their return to full activity serves as a suitable comparison to a traditional, active population," noted Provencher. "This provides important information about handling a failed SLAP repair and provides an example of new treatment courses for others in the future."

Biceps tenodesis treatment involves relocating the biceps tendon to alleviate pain and dysfunction as well as prevent tears from forming in the shoulder tissue.

Obama visits a Bethlehem in midst of change, Islamization

Ammar Awad / Reuters

Christian worshipers visit the Church of the Nativity, revered as the site of Jesus' birth, in the Bethlehem on March 14. Despite the city's importance to Christianity, practitioners are a small minority there.

News analysis

JERUSALEM -- Bethlehem was a late addition to President Barack Obama?s schedule in Israel and the West Bank, and it focuses attention on another of the region?s appellations: the Holy Land.

The Church of the Nativity on Manger Square may be close to the Christian president?s heart, even while he has taken great care to talk of the common bonds that unite the monotheistic religions of Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

Nasser Shiyoukhi / AP, file

Palestinian Muslims take part in Friday noon prayers in Manger Square, outside the Church of Nativity, traditionally believed by Christians to be the birthplace of Jesus.

But as throughout his trip, what Obama does not see in the town may tell more than what he does. Bethlehem is a mirror of the region, where rapid and relentless change threatens Christians themselves.?

The American leader will be warmly welcomed officially, but on the streets the story is different. Bethlehem has been seething ever since it was announced that Obama would visit. Palestinian political activists were furious when the municipality removed a statue in Manger Square that showed Palestine without Israel and fought contractors to keep it in place.?

Obama posters have been defaced, American flags burned and activists set up a protest tent on the edge of town to show how Israel can build homes there but Palestinians can?t.

What Obama will not be able to avoid on the 10-minute drive from Jerusalem is the wall, more than 20 feet high, that cuts Bethlehem off from Jerusalem. ?As he is driven through the gate into Bethlehem -- a gigantic roadblock cut into the concrete security barrier -- and past the walls he will read the graffiti cursing Israel and calling for a Palestinian state.?

Religion and politics here are sometimes indistinguishable.

Although Bethlehem is probably the most famous Christian place-name, celebrated in hymn and prayer, today it is no longer a Christian town. In 1950, 80 percent of the population was Christian. Today, 80 percent is Muslim. There are far more mosques than churches.

The image that best describes this is just on the other side of Manger Square from the Church of the Nativity, venerated by Christians as the site where Jesus was born. The main mosque, the Mosque of Omar, stands there, the muezzin?s call to prayer echoes across the rooftops, competing with the peel of the bells from the church across the square. ??

President Barack Obama on Thursday urged the Israeli people to put themselves in the shoes of Palestinians and recognize their "right to self-determination, their right to justice." NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

So many of the faithful answer its call that at the week?s main prayers, Friday midday, they don?t all fit in the mosque and flow out into Manger Square, covering part of it.

The cause is partly a higher birth rate among Muslims than Christians, according to figures from the Palestinian and Israeli statistics bureaus. Figures from the agencies show that Muslim women in the West Bank were likely to have 3.8 children during their lifetimes, compared with 2.1 for Israeli Christians. Also it is partly because Christians seek a better life far away from the turbulent struggle between Jews and Arabs for control of their land. Although many Christians say this is their struggle too, the proportion of people emigrating is much higher among Christians than Muslims or Jews. Only about 2 percent of the region's population today is Christian.

Obama?s visit though will not focus attention solely on the birthplace of Jesus but on the plight of Christians across the whole Middle East.?

A report last year by the British think tank Civitas said that Christianity was at risk of being wiped out in the biblical heartland because of "Islamic oppression"?and estimated that up to two-thirds of Christians had emigrated or been killed in the past century. They continue to be particularly persecuted in predominantly Muslim countries, not only in the Middle East but worldwide, according to the study.

Obama is on a mission to help bring peace to the Holy Land and may indeed find a moment of personal peace and prayer in the Grotto of the Nativity beneath the stone floor of the church. If he has any time to reflect at all, it must be that peace here is still a distant dream worth pursuing.

Strength in Numbers: Mathematicians Unite to Tackle Climate Change and Other Planetary Problems

What do polar ice caps, guinea worm disease and wildfires have in common? All are being modeled with cutting-edge mathematics. Mathematical societies and institutes around the world are participating in "Mathematics of Planet Earth," or MPE, this year. They aim to study the math that underpins geologic and biological processes on our planet as well as encourage more math researchers to tackle these problems. Events are planned for the year 2013, but the organizers hope that the initiative will have lasting effects. MPE is the brainchild of Christiane Rousseau, past president of the Canadian Mathematical Society. She had the idea several years ago of uniting mathematicians from across the globe to study problems ranging from climate change and sustainability to earthquake prediction and disease pandemics. It was a lofty goal but it resonated within the community and took off. Just one week elapsed, she says, from the time she conceived the notion to when ?all the North American research institutes? came onboard. Enthusiasm spread from North America overseas, and now MPE partners include societies all over the world, including schools and centers in Europe, Latin America, Southeast Asia and Africa. Climate change is the poster child for MPE. Mathematicians routinely travel to Antarctica to study polar ice; they are working on figuring out how quickly Earth is warming, what crops will be most affected by climate change and where the tipping points are if we want to try to mitigate damage. But even before questions of the climate and sustainability became paramount, Rousseau says, mathematics was, and still is, vital for discovering many aspects of the planet itself: Ancient scientists determined that the world was a sphere by observing the angle of the sun at different points on the planet. In the 1930s Danish seismologist Inge Lehmann used mathematics to determine that Earth is not molten liquid throughout, but has a solid core. "You cannot see what's inside the Earth with your eyes," Rousseau says. "I like to tell students, 'you put your mathematical glasses on, and then you understand.'" Some mathematicians themselves don't realize that all of this modeling actually uses novel techniques. Barry Cipra, a freelance mathematics writer, says, "Within the mathematics community there can be the view that these are differential equations that were worked out hundreds of years ago," but in reality the models aren't all "off-the-shelf." Real ingenuity and new ideas are needed to develop them. One goal of MPE is to convince more mathematicians that climate change and other planetary problems are not only important but also interesting. "That's what the mathematicians like when they choose a problem," Rousseau says. Other goals of the MPE initiative are increasing public understanding of the mathematics behind climate change and other planetary problems as well as using these real-world questions to excite students about math starting as early as elementary school. In addition to preparing educational materials for schools, partner organizations are offering public lectures about all sorts of topics related to the mathematics of the planet?and its residents?from global warming to crime patterns. MPE itself is only a framework. It has a Web site with information about related events and a daily blog written by volunteers. But partner organizations such as the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) and the Simons Foundation host and sponsor the lectures, courses and exhibitions held in conjunction with the initiative. "We have no budget?the partners have a budget," Rousseau says. The initiative officially launched in Canada on December 7, 2012, and in the U.S. on January 9, 2013 at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Diego. Other countries have had inaugural events since then. The European launch was held March 5 in conjunction with MPE day at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. Events that day included a screening of the film Exit (about human global migration), a panel discussion on what mathematics can do for the planet and a public lecture by Edward Lungu of the University of Botswana on utilizing the environment to manage HIV/AIDS. Rousseau hopes that the initiative will help nurture new ideas for dealing with climate change and encourage changes at the political level. Rousseau says that communicating the economics of the situation to politicians is key. "They want to know how much it will cost if you act now, and how much it will cost if you don't act now. It will be so much more expensive if we act later." Follow Scientific American on Twitter @SciAm and @SciamBlogs. Visit ScientificAmerican.com for the latest in science, health and technology news.

South Korean Internet provider says believes service hacked

By Steve Keating ORLANDO, Florida, March 20 (Reuters) - Rory McIlroy's decision to skip the Arnold Palmer Invitational surprised the tournament host, who expressed his disappointment on Wednesday that the world number one was not at Bay Hill this week. The 83-year-old Palmer said he had jokingly suggested he might break McIlroy's arm if he did not show up but did not try to force the young Northern Irishman into making an appearance. "Frankly, I thought he was going to play, and I was as surprised as a lot of people when he decided he was not going to play," said Palmer. ...

(AP Photo/Sue Ogrocki)

(AP) ? Ty Lawson scored 25 points, Andre Miller had 20 points and nine assists and the Denver Nuggets beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 114-104 Tuesday night to win a 13th straight game for the first time since joining the NBA.

The Nuggets trailed by one at halftime but took control in the third quarter and never let Oklahoma City reclaim the lead. Denver moved within 3? games of the Thunder in the Northwest Division and became the first team this season to beat Oklahoma City three times.

It's also a big win in the chase for home-court advantage in the playoffs for Denver, which is tied with Miami for the NBA's best home record at 30-3.

Kevin Durant had 34 points and Russell Westbrook chipped in 25 for Oklahoma City, which lost at home for just the fifth time this season.

The Thunder gave up a season-worst 72 points in the paint ? Denver's specialty ? as both teams struggled throughout the game from 3-point range. The Nuggets had 66 and 60 points in the lane in wins against Oklahoma City in Denver earlier this season.

Denver's previous longest winning streak in the NBA was 12 straight games in 1982. The franchise won 15 in a row in the ABA.

The Nuggets trailed 66-65 at halftime, but took the lead on Danilo Gallinari's 3-pointer and then followed Westbrook's tying, two-handed dunk off an inbound alley-oop pass by charging ahead with a 12-2 run. Andre Iguodala's right-handed, fast-break slam ? created by Gallinari's steal ? put Denver up 80-70 midway through the third and prompted Scott Brooks' second timeout to try and end the surge.

After back-to-back Thunder baskets, the Nuggets added to their cushion with seven straight points ? a Lawson 3-pointer, a Corey Brewer jumper and then an 18-footer by Lawson ? to make it 87-74 with 2:59 left in the third.

Oklahoma City got as close as 102-97 when Westbrook hit a 17-foot jumper from the left elbow with 4:08 to play, but Miller had back-to-back jumpers as Denver answered right back with five straight points. Miller closed it out from the foul line after that.

Miller scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, hitting five of six foul shots in the final 69 seconds.

The Nuggets had six players score in double figures, getting 13 apiece from Kenneth Faried and Gallinari, 11 from Corey Brewer and 10 from Iguodala. Faried also grabbed 15 rebounds as Denver overcame a 14-6 first-quarter rebounding deficit to beat Oklahoma City 52-45 on the glass.

Wilson Chandler, who tied his career-high with 35 points in a win at Chicago a night earlier, did not return after separating his left shoulder in the fourth quarter.

Kevin Martin had 14 points off the bench for Oklahoma City and Kendrick Perkins had 11 rebounds, but did not play over the final 18 minutes as Denver build up its big rebounding edge.

The Nuggets were 4 for 21 from 3-pointer range, only slightly better than Oklahoma City's 4 for 25.

The Thunder led 38-28 early in the second after Martin's leaning basket from the right wing as the shot clock was running down. Denver took advantage of Oklahoma City's bench to score the next eight points, all on layups and a dunk, to tighten it up again.

Notes: Nuggets coach George Karl drew a technical foul in the second quarter for complaining to official Marat Kogut after Lawson was called for his third foul against Durant's "rip move," when he swings the ball through a defender's arms. ... Denver's winning streak is the third-longest in the NBA this season, behind Miami's current 23-game run and the Los Angeles Clippers' 17-game streak. Oklahoma City won 12 straight earlier in the season. ... The Heat and San Antonio are the only other teams to beat Oklahoma City twice this season.

Scientists confirm Higgs boson discovery

The particle detected last July by CERN's Large Hadron Collider is indeed the elusive Higgs boson, say researchers. The discovery completes the Standard Model of particle physics and could help predict the ultimate fate of the universe.

The mass of the Higgs boson particle, possibly uncovered at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Geneva, may mean doom for our universe. Here, proton-proton collisions at the LHC showing events consistent with the Higgs.

A newfound particle discovered at the world's largest atom smasher last year is, indeed, the Higgs boson, the particle thought to give other matter its mass, scientists reported today (March 14) at the annual Rencontres de Moriond conference in Italy.

Physicists announced on July 4, 2012, that, with more than 99 percent certainty, they had found a new elementary particle weighing about 126 times the mass of the proton that was likely the long-sought?Higgs boson. The Higgs is sometimes referred to as the "God particle," to the?chagrin of many scientists, who prefer its official name.

But the two experiments, CMS and ATLAS, hadn't collected enough data to say the particle was, for sure, the Higgs boson, the last undiscovered piece of the puzzle predicted by?the Standard Model, the reigning theory of particle physics.

Now, after collecting two and a half times more data inside the?Large Hadron Collider?(LHC) ? where protons zip at near light-speed around the 17-mile-long (27 kilometer) underground ring beneath Switzerland and France ? physicists say the particle is the Higgs. [In Photos: Searching for the Higgs Boson]

"The preliminary results with the full 2012 data set are magnificent and to me it is clear that we are dealing with a Higgs boson though we still have a long way to go to know what kind of Higgs boson it is," said CMS spokesperson Joe Incandela in a statement.

Dave Charlton, ATLAS spokesperson agreed, the new results "point to the new particle having the spin-parity of a Higgs boson as in the Standard Model," referring to a quantum property of elementary particles.

To confirm the particle as the Higgs boson, physicists needed to collect tons of data that would reveal its quantum properties as well as how it interacted with other particles. For instance, a Higgs particle should have no spin and its parity, or the measure of how its mirror image behaves, should be positive, both of which were supported by data from the ATLAS and CMS experiments.

Even so, the scientists are not sure whether this Higgs boson is the one predicted by the Standard Model or perhaps the lightest of several bosons predicted to exist by other theories.

Seeing how this particle decays into other particles could let physicists know whether this Higgs is the "plain vanilla" Standard Model Higgs. Detecting a Higgs boson is rare, with just one observed for every 1 trillion proton-proton collisions. As such, the LHC physicists say they need much more data to understand all of the ways in which the Higgs decays.

From what is known about the particle now, physicists have said the?Higgs boson may spell the universe's doom?in the very far future. That's because the mass of the Higgs boson is a critical part of a calculation that portends the?future of space and time. Its mass of 126 times the mass of the proton is just about what would be needed to create a fundamentally unstable universe that would lead to a cataclysm billions of years from now.

"This calculation tells you that many tens of billions of years from now there'll be a catastrophe," Joseph Lykken, a theoretical physicist at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Ill., said last month at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

"It may be the universe we live in is inherently unstable, and at some point billions of years from now it's all going to get wiped out," added Lykken, a collaborator on the CMS experiment.

Morocco: millions spent on an incomplete road to nowhere ...

By Youssef El Kaidi

Morocco World News

Fez, March 14, 2013

Sixty millions dirhams ($ 7 million) and three years of construction work were not enough to defeat the specter of isolation.

More than three years have passed since the start of construction to pave the road linking the center of Beni Oulid (105 Klms from Fez) and the far-flung Douar of ?Tamdah (24 Km from Beni Oulid center) with a budget worth more than sixty million dirhams ($ 7 million).

The project was meant to break the isolation of the remote douars of Tamdah and Mhamdah, yet nobody exactly knows when the construction works in this project will finish. ?Even the technical panel erected in Beni Oulid center does not refer to a clear-cut date for the end of works. What seems clear (amidst this ambiguity) for the Oualidi residents in these remote douars is the continuous erosion caused by rain (thankfully) which uncovers the adulterated and faked works.

Deplorable state of the road linking the center of Beni Oulid and the far-flung Douar of Tamdah in Morocco. MWN PhotoBesides this delay in finishing this project, people have expressed their indignation through a number of protests against the choice of the trajectory of the road which contains a lot of curves and obstacles. The former mayor of Taounate made a field visit to the mentioned road, inspected it and ordered the transfer of its direction but to no avail.

The question that seems beyond answer is regarding the ?engineer? who planned that strange path for the road as if his pencil shunned the areas where people concentrate more, which makes the majority of people far from the direct benefit of the road. The correct and useful road-trajectory, people in Beni oulid say, should pass by Alqub ? Zayama ? Wlad Butin ? Wlad Aghazal ? Timadghas ? Mahamdah ? Tamdah instead of the current trajectory which benefits only three or four Douars.

The heavy rain witnessed in the region during this rainy season took its toll on the road infrastructure and returned everything to zero. Much of what has been built during the past three years has experienced severe damaged and many technical equipment that had been built are lost. This means a further increase in cost and the continuing prolongation of the plight of people with an already dilapidated infrastructure that worsens every winter. For all these reasons, citizens in Beni Oulid demand the visit and the intervention of a ministerial committee to investigate the matter of this road and to bring things back to normal.
