Syrian defector wants to help unify opposition

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria's most prominent defector offered himself up Thursday as a figure to unite the fractious opposition, saying he failed to persuade his former friend, President Bashar Assad, to end a bloody crackdown that has killed thousands of Syrians.

The remarks by Manaf Tlass, a Syrian brigadier general until he abandoned the regime this month, were published in a Saudi newspaper just as opposition factions gathered in Qatar to try to agree on a transitional leadership if Assad's regime falls.

Some opposition members are deeply skeptical of Tlass, believing he's far too close to the regime and nothing more than a fair-weather friend.

Mahmoud Othman, a member of the opposition Syrian National Council, said Tlass would simply "bring back the regime with a different image."

"Those who recently defected from the regime must not take part in leading the transitional period," Othman told The Associated Press from Istanbul, where he is based. "After the transitional period, the Syrian people will choose whomever they want through the ballots."

Tlass, a commander in the powerful Republican Guard and the son of a former defense minister, defected in early July. Although the regime has remained largely intact over the course of the 17-month-old uprising, the pace of defections appears to be picking up.

"I will try to help as much as I can to unite all the honorable people inside and outside Syria to put together a roadmap to get us out of this crisis, whether there is a role for me or not," he told the Al-Sharq Al-Awsat daily in an interview.

He said he was in Saudi Arabia ? a key financial backer of the rebellion ? to assess what kind of assistance the oil-rich nation could give to help create a new Syria. He said he does not see a future for Syria with Assad at the helm.

On Thursday, Turkey's Foreign Ministry announced a surprise visit by Tlass. He was to attend a dinner with Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, who has been an outspoken Assad critic.

In the three weeks since his defection he has spoken publicly only twice, both times to Saudi-controlled media.

Tlass, once a personal friend of Assad, told Al-Sharq Al-Awsat that the regime has many good people without blood on their hands and that the country's institutions should be preserved. He said he tried to persuade the president not to listen to his inner circle of security advisers who were all counseling for a harsh crackdown on the uprising.

Tlass said he defected when he realized the regime could not be deterred from its single-minded pursuit of crushing the opposition.

"Sometimes in a friendship you advise a friend many times, and then you discover that you aren't having any impact, so you decide to distance yourself," he said.

A handsome man in his mid-40s, Manaf led an extravagant lifestyle and he and his wife were fixtures on the social scene in Syria, where he often spoke on Assad's behalf.

Tlass was also one of a handful of Sunnis to hold power in the government dominated by the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam. His father, Mustafa Tlass, was the most trusted lieutenant of Hafez Assad, the president's father and predecessor.

In Doha, Qatar, members of the Syrian National Council met Thursday to try to come up with a possible transitional administration that could step in as a stopgap government if rebel forces drive out Assad. Qatar is a leading backer of the Syrian rebels.

Thursday's meeting is the most comprehensive bid to bring together various Syrian opposition groups and show world leaders a credible alternative to Assad.

The SNC has acted as the international face of the revolution, but it's been unable to unite all dozens of disparate rebel and opposition factions under one banner.

The conflict in Syria, which activists say has killed more than 19,000 people since March 2011, has drawn deep international condemnation. But there are few options for world powers to help beyond diplomacy ? in part because of fears that any military intervention could exacerbate an already explosive battle. Syria's close ties to Iran and Hezbollah mean that the conflict has the potential to draw in the country's neighbors.

In Washington, the Obama administration is weighing its options for more direct involvement in the Syrian civil war if the rebels opposing the Assad regime can wrest enough control to create a safe haven for themselves, U.S. officials said.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says it's only a matter of time before the rebels have enough territory and organization to create such areas.

"More and more territory is being taken," Clinton said this week. "It will eventually result in a safe haven inside Syria, which will then provide a base for further actions by the opposition."

Still, U.S. officials are standing by their assertion that they won't provide arms to Syria's anti-Assad forces or push for a no-fly zone over rebel-controlled areas. With Syria's government fighting back forcefully against opposition offensives in Damascus, Aleppo and elsewhere, it's still unclear whether the rebels could create a secure staging ground for the rebellion.

For more than a week, Assad's regime has suffered a string of blows, although his forces are regaining their momentum. After a rebel rush on the capital, Damascus, last week ? including a brazen bombing that killed four top regime insiders ? the government routed the fighters by calling in attack helicopters and heavy weapons that devastated entire neighborhoods.

Rebels have been fighting for six days in the commercial capital Aleppo, and on Thursday they braced for a government onslaught amid reports that the regime is massing reinforcements to retake the embattled city of 3 million. They reported more intense firepower being used against them, including artillery strikes.

"Regime forces have been randomly shelling neighborhoods, and the civilians are terrified," local activist Mohammed Saeed told the AP via Skype.

The clashes have spread to neighborhoods close to the center of the city, which has a medieval center that is a UNESCO world heritage site.

According to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, some 130 people have been killed in Aleppo since the clashes there began last Saturday.

A Palestinian activist in the Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus said Syrian troops shelled the camp Thursday, causing many casualties.

The camp is next to several neighborhoods sympathetic to the rebels.

"There are snipers on the roofs shooting at people. We are really in a war zone now," Abu Omar told the AP via Skype.

As the violence continues, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he fears for Syria's future. On Thursday, he paid his respects to the 8,000 victims of the 1995 Srebrenica massacre ? and said he does not want his successor to have to do the same 20 years from now in Syria.

"The international community must be united not to see any further bloodshed in Syria because I do not want to see any of my successors, after 20 years, visiting Syria, apologizing for what we could have done now to protect the civilians in Syria ? which we are not doing now," he said during a visit to a memorial-cemetery complex near Srebrenica, Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Astronomers find strange stuff in the space between two clusters of galaxies

    Web edition : Friday, July 27th, 2012

Abell 222 is a giant group of galaxies in deep space. So is Abell 223 ? one of Abell 222?s nearest neighbors. Each galaxy in each group is home to a massive number of stars, which means the clusters are brimming with light. But if you peer through a telescope at the space between the two galaxy clusters, you won?t see anything, just a dark patch of sky. The scenery would be the same if you could ride a spaceship from one group of galaxies to the other.?

The space between the two galaxy clusters is, however, anything but empty, according to a new study by astronomers.

SEO ? The Key to Online Business Success

This article has been viewed 12 times.

Issues launched your own internet site and haven?t specifically been generating business, you may be wondering about having less business you?re receiving.
There?s only one reason for this: zero on the web presence.

You can have the coolest site on the internet and hold the best products or companies, but if no one can discover your site, the work you?ve put in it is useless.

So, how do you you could make your online presence recognized? There?s just one answer: SEO, otherwise known as search engine optimization. There are numerous of ways to get your site on search results; listed below are a couple of them.

    . Keywords and phrases
Keywords are terms a person types in a very search bar to get certain information, and the most important element of ranking.
With no keywords, your business might be non-existent. It?s a good idea to work with specific keywords which are the most appropriate for your area of interest. Let?s say your site specializes in selling gadgets for example phones, tabs, mp4s and many others.

Don?t use broad terms like ?gadgets?, ?phones? ?tabs?, instead utilize more specific words like ?cheap Samsung Galaxy S-3.? Keywords can be put anywhere on your web page, but for search engines, the most crucial part of your page is the blue tavern at the top of your webpage. So, you might want to be certain to put your keywords generally there.

    . SEO Articles
SEO articles alter from normal articles because they are written around key phrases and have particular measures. SEO articles are widely read because these offer details and useful tips in different subjects.

If you write an SEO write-up around your site?s keywords and when clicked on, you?ll be able to generate several web traffic.

Therefore, you?ll have better chances in getting a few business. Using keywords and phrases just once in an write-up is good, but a 2%-3% keyword density post would be better- a keyword in the title, system, and another in the summary.

You can write basically whatever you want providing you put in your keywords somewhere inside your article.

Keep in mind however that whatever you create, it still has to make sense because humans are going to read them.

Keywords and phrases and SEO articles are just two ways to get your website on search results. However, if you would like to be near the top of search engine lists, you could look at hiring a good SEO agency to make your site recognized to all.

?UNMASKED?, JUDEO PHOBIA SCREENED AT LIBRARY 8/1 ...

Anti-semitism is not only the longest known form of hatred in the history of humanity. It is the only form of hatred that is truly global.

In her film, ?Unmasked Judeophobia, The Threat to Civilization,? Gloria Greenfield contends that the 1975 UN Resolution equating Zionism with racism served as the global debut of a new, sophisticated, virulent, and lethal strain of anti-Semitism. The new anti-Semitism portrays the collective body of Jews, Israelis, and Zionists as the evil power in the world and the Jewish state?s existence as the source of the world?s ills. And yet, in an era when human rights is considered by many to be the universal secular religion, there is general silence on the subject.

The Wilkinson Public Library screens ?Unmasked? Wednesday, August 1, 5:30 p.m? for a pre-show reception. The screening begins promptly at 6 p.m. Gloria Greenfield will be in attendance to answers questions.

?Unmasked? puts the facts on the table. In Europe, synagogues have been burned, rabbis have been abused in the streets, Jewish children have been physically attacked and murdered on the way to school and inside schools, and Jewish cemeteries have been desecrated. In Canada, Jewish students were attacked on York campus. In the U.S., Jewish students fear for their safety on UC Irvine and UC Santa Clara campuses.? In 2012, Israel Apartheid Week programs were held in two dozen U.S. cities and on college campuses (Florida Atlantic University, Bard College, Florida State University, Columbia University). And former U.S. President Jimmy Carter wrote a book ?Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid,? comparing Israel to South Africa.

Eli Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor who has dedicated his life to fighting antisemitism, opens the film with the following:

?Since 1945 I was not as afraid as I am now. I?m afraid because anti-Semitism that I thought belonged to the past, somehow survived. I was convinced in ?45 that anti-Semitism had died with its Jewish victims at Auschwitz and Treblinka, but I see, no, the Jews perished but anti-Semitism in some parts of the world is flourishing.?

The film covers statements by the Iranian President Ahmadinejad saying that Israel must be wiped off the map, and reactions to his comments worldwide. On this issue, Greenfield cites a comment from the film by Alvin H. Rosenfeld, the director of the Institute for the Study of Contemporary Anti-Semitism in Indiana, who says:
?One of the lessons of the Holocaust is that we have to be literalists. When we hear somebody say, ?Kill the Jews,? we have to realize, they probably mean it.?
?Unmasked? is not only educational, it is also a call to wake up, to stand up and be counted because indifference or neutrality is no longer an option.

Greenfield brings over 30 years of strategic planning, marketing, and management experience to her current work dedicated to the strengthening of Jewish identity and Jewish peoplehood.

Salvaged Car Auction Guide, How To Buy and Sell | Millionaire ...

    ?

Salvage car auctions are an easy and viable way for sellers to exhibit and sell salvage cars in auction format on one of the many automotive salvaged car auctions sites on the Internet. Buyers can locate and examine information on vehicles they wish to purchase, and enter bids, where the highest bid wins out, within a certain auction timeframe. Sellers can list vehicle descriptions and conditions, and post photos. Buyers and sellers must register on the auction site, providing personal contact information.

    Sellers

When a person desires to sell a vehicle in a salvaged car auction, he-she needs to enter the vehicle information in the required fields on the auction seller?s page. These will include an adequate description or the condition of the vehicle, along with a photo, mention of any guarantees or warranties, the vehicle location, terms of sale, minimum bid price (reserve),and arrangement for vehicle transport. Interested buyers in salvage car auctions will attempt to outbid each other for the purpose of purchasing the vehicle, and the highest bid will win out at the conclusion of the auction. Email notifications, via the salvaged car auctions site, to the seller, will allow him-her to monitor the progress of the bids. If the reserve or minimum bid has not been met the seller will be notified by e-mail at the conclusion of the auction. The seller is totally responsible for the sale and conditions of the purchase. Salvaged car auctions merely serve only as a database service to list vehicles and connect buyers with sellers.

    Buyers

Upon entering the salvaged car auctions site, a buyer is required to register, supplying a user ID and password (the ID and password will allow the prospective buyer to browse the auction database and locate specific vehicles). When buyers use salvage cars auctions, they must enter their vehicle of interest in a field or box supplied on the buyer?s page, which will include make, model, year and location. The buyer will place competitive bids using an alias, and the alias is used exclusively for making bids, and changes for each bid placement. Salvaged car auctions might have many customers bidding on the same vehicle, so the buyer can be appraised of the latest high bid from a message sent to his e-mail box. The buyer should read the terms and conditions listed by the seller before hitting the bid button, since terms and conditions can change from seller to seller.

Anyone interested in salvaged car auctions, for the purpose of selling or buying salvaged vehicles, needs only computer and Internet access. It couldn?t be any easier than just a click away!

Foreign Investors and US Real Estate - San Francisco Condominiums

Historically, the United States has been a leading choice among foreign investors in real estate. In 1995, there was a surge of foreign real estate investors, and between 2000 and 2003, there was another surge. In 2008, foreign commercial real estate became attractive again to foreign investors seeking a bargain on commercial real estate.

In general, the United States has been attractive to foreign investors. Though the United States is losing ground to Brazil in 2012, the country is continues to hold the number one spot in attracting global foreign real estate investors. During the economic housing recession, foreign investments helped to keep certain areas of the United States stable despite economic woes.

The State of Global Foreign Investor Market

According to Association of Foreign Investors in Real Estate?s (AFIRE) 20th annual survey, respondents held over $874 billion of global real estate. Three hundred and thirty-eight billion of the total $874 billion was invested in the United States. Foreign investors are choosing the United States over one-third of the time for foreign commercial real estate investments.

The opportunity is great for foreign real estate investing, but the conditions must be favorable in the eyes of the investors. Currently, the United States remains number one because there are few restrictions on foreign investments when compared to other countries such as China, Australia and Canada. The biggest impediment to buying property in the United States is the ability to obtain a loan and the ability to pay taxes.

Though commercial real estate investing in the United States is down 12 percent from 2011, there is still significant interest and opportunity. Most of the market share was lost to Brazil. Brazil holds the number two spot in foreign investments globally. In 2011, 64.7 percent believed the United States represents the best opportunity for foreign investments. In 2012, only 42.2 percent believed the United States would offer the best opportunity. Experts believe that United States will continue to hold the number one spot despite the decline in foreign investor confidence in 2012.

Which States Are Receiving the Most Foreign Investors?

This year, foreign investors have focused their efforts in major cities such as San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Washington and Boston. In these areas, housing prices are increasing and yields are decreasing.

In 2012, New York remains the global leader in terms of foreign investments. Washington is the third most popular location for global investments, and San Francisco was ranked in the number five spot. London held the number two spot, and Sao Paulo was ranked fourth in terms of foreign commercial investments.

San Francisco, in particular, is attractive to foreign investors and has improved its ranking from number 10 in 2011 to number five in 2012. Foreign investors are just one component to the San Francisco commercial housing market remaining stable in 2012. Stability keeps San Francisco commercial property prices high while other regions of the country remain low.

What Types of Properties are Foreign Investors Considering?

According to a recent study, foreign investors are considering apartment buildings in the United States. The multi-family unit has been at the top of the list in terms of foreign real estate investments for the fourth year. Because of foreign real estate investments, rents and occupancy levels are more stable than before 2007.

Foreign investors are also considering warehouse and distribution centers. In 2012, this is the second most popular investment. Last year, warehouse and distribution centers ranked fifth. Office properties and retail properties were ranked in the third and fourth positions, respectively. Hotels were previously ranked second and now, they are ranked fifth in terms of good investments.

Why is the United States a Leader in Foreign Real Estate Investments?

There are several reasons why the United States remains a leader in the foreign investments. One of the main reasons is there are no rules inhibiting foreign investment in the United States except in the event of national security. In this instance, the Exon-Florio law would take effect, and the transaction will be reviewed by Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). Historically, less than 10 percent of foreign investments were ever investigated under this law. Though this law primarily relates to foreign investments in a company, similar reviews have been made in terms of real estate.

The United States is considered to be a safe haven for foreign investors. Since the fall of the United States dollar, the acquisitions are increasing in the United States. Tax laws are favorable for foreign investors. This helps the United States maintain good relationships with countries. Any capital gains earn on foreign investments may either be tax free or subject to a rate of 15 percent. The tax laws vary based upon the situation. Tax deferment opportunities are also available for foreign investors.

Not all tax laws are favorable. Foreign investors must do their research to avoid exorbitant taxes. Poorly advised investors may be subject to up to 65 percent tax on income, and inheritance taxes have been as much as 48 percent. While there are great opportunities in America for foreign investors, they should research and invest wisely. For the most part, the United States tax laws are written to encourage foreign investors to buy instead of discouraging them.

How Will the Repeal of the 1980 Foreign Investment Act Affect Foreign Real Estate Investments in the United States?

The Foreign Investment in Real Property Tax Act (FIRPTA) is one of the few impediments to foreign real estate investment. The law was originally designed to prevent foreign investors from buying farm property. This tax requires foreign investors to pay domestic and United States taxes when selling an investment. The only exception is if the United States has a taxation treaty with an investor?s home country. FIRPTA states that this tax penalizes foreign investors unfairly. FIRPTA has lobbied for change under the grounds that double taxation does not apply to foreign investors buying United States stocks and bonds.

Dwayne ?The Rock? Johnson declared his intention to battle for the WWE Title at the Royal Rumble!

Finally, The Rock will come back to the Royal Rumble!

In the midst of the monumental 1,000th episode of Raw,?Dwayne ?The Rock? Johnson emerged before current WWE Champion CM Punk, Daniel Bryan and the WWE Universe ? making the earth-shattering announcement that he will fight for the WWE Title at January?s celebrated pay-per-view event. The surprise was an extremely bold move by the iconic Superstar, considering that there is no way of knowing who will be the titleholder when the New Year rolls around.

In the tumultuous world of the squared circle, is it possible that The Second City Saint ? currently in his eighth month with championship gold ? will still be in possession of it six months from now? Could John Cena, who faced Rock in the main event of WrestleMania XXVIII, be enjoying his 11th WWE Title reign? When it comes time, it might not be either one of them. There conceivably may be any number of formidable names on the contract, including former World Champions Big Show, Chris Jericho, Kane, Daniel Bryan or Rey Mysterio.

?The Most Electrifying Man in All Entertainment? has used the marquee pay-per-view to attain the WWE Championship before, capturing the coveted title for the second time at the 1999 Royal Rumble with a victory over Mankind in an ?I Quit? Match. One year later, The Brahma Bull emerged triumphant in the illustrious Royal Rumble Match, giving him ? at least temporarily ? a one-on-one WWE Title Match at WrestleMania 2000.

However, now that the die has been cast, can The People?s Champion walk out of the US Airways Center in Phoenix with his eighth WWE Championship around his waist? Find out when The Rock battles for the squared circle?s most prestigious prize at the Royal Rumble, January 27, 2013, at 8 ET/5 PT, only on pay-per-view.

A WWE.com poll on the same night revealed that the WWE Universe wants The Great One to face CM Punk for the WWE Title at the Royal Rumble. Add you vote to the mix now.

Mongolian Economy and Finance: ASIA CREDIT CLOSE: Spreads ...

HONG KONG, July 23 (IFR) - Asian credit spreads blew out on Monday as prices were marked wider on eurozone-related jitters amid thin volumes. But the technical outlook stayed favourable as funds are expected to remain invested in emerging market credits.

The benchmark iTraxx Asia investment grade index was marked as wide as 171/172bp in late trade after Spanish 10-year government bond yields hit their highest level o n Monday since the euro was launched. The index had hovered around its best in three months last Friday at around 161/162bp.

The investment grade segment was marked 5-10bp wider, but for all the gapping out in numbers, there was no kneejerk investor response.

"There is no panic selling and technicals are still solid for a lot of these bonds although buyers have been on the backfoot today," said a Singapore-based trader, noting that the strong inflows into emerging market fixed income assets was still there.

"I see a pullback on the back of this strong rally we had recently, but the European weakness means some people will move out of there and into emerging markets."

Fund tracker EPFR Global data showed EM fixed income fund saw inflows of USD935m in the week to July 18, bringing the four-week aggregate to USD3.6bn.

High-yield inflows have been even more impressive with additions of USD1.3bn in the latest week, taking the four-week tally to USD7.5bn.

Much of the recent trading volume was in the sovereign debt space where Indonesian and Philippine government bonds have reported stellar gains in recent weeks on the back of the US Treasury rally.

The Indonesian 2022s and the Philippines 2022s are down by half to three-quarter of a point at 103.5/104 and 110.25/110.75, respectively.

But in a sign that investors continue to seek pick-up over near record low US Treasuries, the losses at the longer end are contained.

The Philippines bonds due 2034 are bid at 134.5, the 2037s are at 115.25 and the Indonesian 2042s are at 106.75, all lower by an eighth to a quarter of a point.

Among recent new issues, CIMB 2017s are at 203/193, quoting much wider than last week's reoffer spreads.

New bonds from Korea are also weaker with the Kogas 2017s at 183/178bp, above the 175bp issue price earlier this month. Korea Exchange Bank are also wider at 203/202bp.

Sri Lanka's sovereign bonds remained steady amid a sell-off on hopes of funds coming from the International Monetary Fund. The agency has approved the final loan tranche of USD415m for the country, sparking hopes the global lender will push through another programme by the month-end.

The recently sold bonds due 2022 are trading steady at 101.50, way higher than last Tuesday's reoffer at par and close to the peak struck after it was riced at a yield of 5.875%.

In contrast, analysts are getting wary of rich valuations in state-owned Development Bank of Mongolia.

The bank's bonds due 2017 are trading half a point lower at 99/99.125 for a yield of just under 6%, a rise of 50bp in the past two weeks. The 5.75% bonds were sold in March at par as a heavy USD6.25bn order book helped the bank raise USD580m.

The bonds carry an unconditional and irrevocable guarantee from the Ministry of Finance on behalf of the government of Mongolia and are seen as a proxy for the commodity dependant economy. Softer commodity prices, weaker demand from giant neighbour China and fears of resource nationalism are some of the risks pressurising these bonds.

High yield bonds are trading 1-1.5 points lower with the underperformers of the day in Evergrande 2015s 97.5/98 and the Bumi 2017s at 102.25/103, which are both trading off by 2 points. Evergande has rallied from 90 in mid-June while Bumi has risen from around 95.

"China property related bonds have rallied on expectation that the government would not tighten policies any further. Furthermore, given the lack of new issuances and continuing strong inflows, high yield investors are pushed to invest in the same names, pushing the market higher, despite already rich valuations," said a Singapore based analyst but warned of selling ahead.

"However, with yield shrinking significantly, the market could be nearing the end of this rally, especially if the primary market starts to pick up."

CreditSights said in a report issues could be seen from credits rated below BBB-.

"There is probably still a steady pipeline of high yield companies waiting in the wings for market conditions to stabilise. Country Garden (Ba3/BB-) is one of the few major Chinese property companies not to have tapped the bond market this year and could seek to raise funds opportunistically, as a liquidity buffer or for potential land acquisitions.

Road King (Ba3/BB-) and Kaisa (B2/B+) have also mentioned that they would like to issue bonds if market conditions permit," it said. Indonesians Medco Energi and Energi Mega Persada are also seen as likely candidates.

Welcome to Onyinye Chukwu's blog: Long Distance Relationships

I was speaking with a friend of mine who said he had not seen his girlfriend in over a year-he's here in Lagos and she is in Jos-and that they were gradually becoming strangers, they barely had anything to say to each other when they spoke on the phone, said he was gradually forgetting what she looked like and was loosing interest in the relationship. I perfectly understood where he was coming from, because personally,i don't do long distance relationships either. its usually stressful and very difficult to maintain and the tendency for it to fail is high, although to be fair, quite a number of them are successful. Now when i say long distance,I don't mean Surulere to Island o, I mean inter-state or country.
Funny enough though,I've met people who actually prefer LDR to having their partners around, they feel they can "breathe" better without having their partners constantly afoot,They are free to conduct their personal business without questions, and then there's the thrill of re-uniting after a long period apart. As Ii said earlier,me o,I don't like LDR at all,I've been in a couple of them and, yes, they failed. Here are my reasons I feel LDR is doomed to fail:
Firstly,I know people say "Distance makes the heart grow fonder",but me I say "Out of sight is out of mind". this is because not seeing one constantly, you realize that you begin to grow apart, you don't talk as regularly as you used to,sometimes, you might not even have anything to say to each other. a colleague of mine left to another place, and I missed him a lot, because we were pretty close, with time though,I began to realize I rarely thought of him,not that we stopped being friends, but we kinda lost that closeness. The same thing applies in a relationship, when you see each other regularly, you share titbits of what happened during the day, you? look forward to seeing them and hearing about their day,its usually not the same with talking on the phone.
Secondly, trust issues begins to arise. I know we are supposed to trust our partners unconditionally-abi is it love sef-but sometimes, you cant help bust not trust them. When u are in an LDR,u cant monitor their activities, you don't know what they are doing,if and when they are lying and if they are actually being faithful. Every time you call and they don't answer, your mind goes into overdrive mode and you begin to imagine all sorts of things. Furthermore, you don't learn about someones character from talking on the phone and sending pictures via BB,these are things you learn from constant interaction. Have you ever tried settling relationship disputes over the phone? Gosh! its one of the most frustrating things ever, you are conscious of airtime, you both cant shout at the same time, heck, you don't even know if they are being sincere or not.
Next,we meet people everyday and gradually, innocent friendship begins to develop where it ordinarily should not. At first you tell yourself its no big deal, after all its not like your being unfaithful or anything, but we all know how it is,it always starts innocently then graduates to something else. Then look at the cost of keeping in touch,if you are not working, you realize that the cost of constantly crediting your phone is telling on your pocket, and somehow,it always falls on one person to do all the calling. eventually, you become tired and give up entirely.
One of my friend's major problem is that he has not had sex in awhile and he thinks its unhealthy for a guy to go a long time without sex.seriously??? ( Roger, stop walking by and tell me if its true). so many guys hold on to that excuse, but hey, what do i know.
Finally,I love to cuddle,I am a very cuddly person and there's just so much that a teddy bear can do,so if your not around to cuddle...well that's just a deal breaker!
Anyway,LDR can be made to work,so long as you don't stay apart for too long. make it a habit of visiting at least once in 4 months,so you don't loose that thing that hold you together...and you don't forget what your partner looks like.

Bringing Savannah home: Family finds lost dog and new life mission ...

Still coping with the death of her husband, a veteran who died of heart failure in Afghanistan, Belinda Stevenson had to face another loss when her husband's beloved dog ran away. NBC's Mara Schiavocampo reports.

    Chiara Sottile, NBC News writes

Johnny Brooks Stevenson, Jr., wrapped his arms around his wife, holding her one last time before leaving their Hinesville, Ga., home.

?Girl, I?ll be alright. I?ll see you in six months,? he said.

Stevenson Jr. -- or "Pops" as most people called the father of two -- served in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years, including in Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield. He retired from the military as a staff sergeant in 2000, at age 40, but when the war in Afghanistan began and many in his community were deployed, Pops decided to leave for Afghanistan in January of this year to work as a contractor at Camp Dwyer in the Helmand River Valley.

"I got the phone call on February 15th, and they basically told me that he had fallen to the ground," recalled Belinda Stevenson, his wife of 29 years.?

The man on the other end of the phone explained that they tried to revive him, but her husband had died. In shock, Belinda said she hung up the phone three different times, unable to hear the news.

A photo of the Stevensons on New Year's Eve, Dec. 31, 2011, in Hinesville, Ga., a month and a half before Johnny Brooks Stevenson (second from right) died. At left, his wife Belinda Stevenson.

"He was my everything," Belinda said of her husband, who was 51 years old. "He was my best friend, he is my soul mate. He will be my soul mate for eternity."

Even now, she said, it is almost impossible for her to accept: "I think because he was over there when he passed away, sometimes I think, 'You know what, he's still going to walk back through that door.'"

Pops had vibrant green eyes and a mischievous personality, and loved the outdoors, Belinda said. Wherever he was -- working on his motorcycles, sweeping his patio or raking leaves off the lawn -- his dog Savannah was always by his side.

"She would grab the water hose from him and she would basically run after him with the water hose, getting herself soaking wet," recalled Belinda.

A military headshot of Johnny Brooks Stevenson, a few years before he retired from the military as a staff sergeant.

When Pops died, Savannah was a constant reminder of her beloved owner. But in May, a powerful storm blew over the fence in the family's backyard, and the ever-adventurous Savannah ran away.

"I felt like when I lost Savannah I lost another part of my husband," said Belinda.

"That dog was something he cherished," said their son, Terrell Stevenson, 24. "For her to have gotten away, it just hurt everybody in our family."

    Searching for Savannah

Terrell drove around the Hinesville area all night in search of Savannah, and went from one animal shelter to another trying to find their three-year-old husky. They were turned away at their local animal control center with no good news.

But weeks later, as Terrell was scanning Facebook animal rescue pages, a blue-eyed, white-tailed husky caught his eye. Savannah's photo had been posted on the Facebook page for Carpathia Paws, an animal rescue, as a missing dog who would be euthanized if she didn't find a home. But they soon discovered Savannah had been placed in a foster home in New Jersey.? Two hours before she was to be put down, Julie Ogden of? West Wood , N.J., had stepped up and offered her home to the missing husky. From the first night that Savannah slept at the Ogden home -- and took her place right on the bed -- they knew she had an owner who cared for her.

"Somebody really loved this dog. You could tell she really trusted people. So we were kind of wondering how she ended up in animal control when she did have a loving home," said Ogden, who volunteers for The Last Resort Rescue.?

Terrell found Ogden on Facebook, but instead of making the trek to New Jersey,?Ogden drove Savannah all the way to Georgia as part of a caravan to raise awareness about shelter animals that are euthanized when owners cannot be found.?

The cars, trucks and vans arrived in Hinesville on July 14th, accompanied by the roar of a dozen motorcycle engines from the same bike group that gave Pops his nickname.

As Savannah took a hesitant step out of the trailer that had carried her for the 14-hour journey, Belinda knelt to the ground, exclaiming, "Oh! Savannah! Savannah!" Within minutes, Savannah was surrounded by the family that had loved her and lost her, blanketed in hugs and receiving pats on the head from all directions.

'I'm getting a little piece of Pops back'

Savannah now has her old yard back, and with a newly installed fence and kennel. For the Stevenson family, it's not just a pet that has been returned home.

"It's like I'm getting a piece of him back, I'm getting a little piece of Pops back. I really am. And that does my heart so much good," said Belinda. The Stevensons found another silver lining in these recent tragedies: both the passing of Pops and Savannah's disappearance led them toward a new mission in life.

Terrell is following in his father's footsteps: he has already completed two tours in Iraq with the Army and is now stationed at Hinesville's Fort Stewart. When his father died, Belinda asked Terrell to create the program for the service, and the hours he spent carefully designing each word and photo reminded him of his passion for graphic design.

"The way I grieved was through graphic design, because I was creating things for my dad, things my dad had inspired me to do," he said. Terrell recently applied to the Savannah College of Art and Design, and is now pursuing a career as a graphic designer.

Though it felt like a tragedy at the time, Belinda now sees Savannah's disappearance as "divine intervention." Caring for animals has since become her mission.

"There's so many dogs out there that are mistreated and need good homes," said Belinda. "I just feel like my mission in life is going to be to do whatever I have to do, one day at a time, to make it better for these animals."

    Courtesy of the Stevenson family

A picture of 'Pops' in Iraq during Desert Storm in 1990. He was 30 years old at the time.

Today, in the Stevenson home, Pops' coffee mug is in the same place as it always has been by the coffee maker. His clothes hang neatly in the closet. And now, thanks to animal rescuers and a woman 800 miles away with a heart for huskies, there's a loyal husky sitting by her family's side, right where she belongs.

The Stevenson family will continue working with animal rescues like Carpathia Paws, and they are even planning a charity motorcycle ride and doggy fashion show?on September 8th called "Paws for Pops."

Alastair Cook: Team effort against South Africa can help us to look after No.1

We are all really excited about the challenge and I think it has captured the public?s imagination because it is two top sides who are so evenly matched.

Every time we play against them it?s exciting. You play cricket to test yourself against some seriously good bowling and that?s what we?ll face in this series.

Foremost will be Dale Steyn, who has long been ranked as the world?s No.1.

He?s quick, shapes it and bowls in good areas which is pretty much the three things you need to be a very good bowler.

Many people have tried to compare Jimmy Anderson and Steyn, suggesting whoever comes out on top in their supposed personal duel will decide the series.

That?s definitely not the way we?re looking at it. We operate as a team and when we bowl it?s not just Jimmy the opposition have to look out for.

We never put too much pressure on one guy. When we played Australia in Australia, everyone contributed at times and we?ll need to do that again during this series.

There?ll be certain moments which will define matches and whoever wins those will win the series. I don?t think the fact the No.1 Test ranking is on the line will provide us with any extra motivation but clearly the adrenaline will be going.

Cisco's LifeConnections Medical Home Program Drives Employee and

    ?

In 2008, Cisco launched their LifeConnection?s onsite health center which uses a Patient- Centered Medical Home model. Today, it supports over 42,000 employees and their families at Cisco?s corporate campus in San Jose, CA.

Cisco?s LifeConnections' Center offers primary and pediatric care integrated with care services including disease/condition management, health coaching, mental health, pharmacy, physical therapy and chiropractic as well as acupuncture services.

Cisco now has two physical LifeConnections' Health Centers, one at their headquarters and a second location at the Cisco Bangalore, India campus.? In addition, they operate a telehealth location in the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina.

Employees access LifeConnections? services online for health management. ?Within our Cisco LifeConnections' portal, our employees and their families can schedule appointments in real-time, view their medical records, communicate securely with their physicians and even send their doctor an attached document such as a food or exercise log?, explains Katelyn Johnson, Manager, Integrated Health?at Cisco Systems.?

Cisco?s approach supports the findings from a recent Accenture?s Connected Health Pulse Survey which found that most patients (90%) want to use technology to self-manage which includes accessing their medical information, booking their doctor?s appointments and refilling their medications. The survey also revealed that patients do not want to give up the interaction with their doctor.?

    Technology Transforms the Patient Experience

Working closely with employees and families, Cisco designed the LifeConnections? Health Center to bring convenience, better care and transparency to the consumer.

Through ongoing interviews with patients, Cisco has heard feedback from consumers who:

? ? ??Do not want to be burdened by the administration of healthcare?

? ? ??Want technology to take away what I don?t like to do (i.e. clip board,

    ? ? ? ? ? discharge payment)?

? ? ??Want to spend more time with my physician?

Cisco has used this insight to determine ways to leverage technology within the LifeConnections? Health Center to increase patient satisfaction including:

Kiosk:?Patients come into the Health Center and use a tablet to have a ?paperless, self-service, check in? including verifying demographic information, paying co-pays and signing consent forms, taking less than five minutes of their time.?

Flat Screen Monitors in Care Suite:?Within the patient-centric care suites, the patient and physician sit side by side to view and discuss health information projected on the flat screen such as the medical record with the latest vitals and lab results, x-rays and educational content about the patient?s condition. Cisco emphasizes the importance of providing transparency to the patient by showing them their medical record, in real time, during the visit.?

HealthPresence in Care Suite:?Cisco has recently partnered with Stanford Hospital and Clinics to enable patients to access specialty care (tele-dermatology) through the use of Cisco?s own telemedicine solution called HealthPresence. A nurse assists the patient in the LifeConnections? Health Center while the Dermatologist connects from the Stanford Outpatient center.? Cisco has found that connecting specialists with patients using this solution offers greater access to specialty care, reduces appointment wait times, and improves patient satisfaction.?

Matching Technology to the Employee Profile

Cisco has put healthcare technology in place to meet the needs and profile of their employees and families.

??We are a high technology company and our many of our employees are engineers who literally live on-line.? Their average age is 42 years. Our employees expect our healthcare experience to mirror the way they work ? which is surrounded by technology.? Specifically, they want technology to help enable care, remove access barriers and overall enhance their experience as a patient.? shares Sharon M. Gibson, Director Healthcare Business Transformation at Cisco. ??Not only do they want to see more information about their health status but they want to see trending data for themselves to better understand how their health stats change over time and how their behavior impacts those results.?

?Our employees are busy and always on the move.? They want to take care of their health in an efficient way.? Soon, we will also offer patients the option of e-visits with their doctors through WebEx, for example?, explains Sharon. ?Online or e-visits would help engage employees in their health, whether from home or even remote sites, and bring the convenience that they demand?.?

The Benefits of Flaxseed, The New Wonder Food! | Zero To Hero TV ...

Is flaxseed the new wonder food? Preliminary studies show that flaxseed may help fight everything from heart disease and diabetes to breast cancer.

Some call it one of the most powerful plant foods on the planet. There?s some evidence it may help reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes. That?s quite a tall order for a tiny seed that?s been around for centuries: flaxseed.

Flaxseed was cultivated in Babylon as early as 3000 BC, according to the Flax Council of Canada. By the 8th century, King Charlemagne believed so strongly in the health benefits of flaxseed that he passed laws requiring his subjects to consume it. Fast-forward 13 centuries, and some experts would say we have preliminary research to back up what Charlemagne suspected all those years ago.

    flax seed

These days, flaxseed is found in all kinds of foods, from crackers to frozen waffles to oatmeal. The Flax Council estimates close to 300 new flax-based products were launched in the U.S. and Canada in 2010 alone. Not only has consumer demand for flaxseed gone up, agricultural use has also increased ? to feed all those chickens laying eggs that are higher in omega-3 fatty acids.

Although flaxseed contains all sorts of healthy components, it owes its healthy reputation primarily to three ingredients:

    • Omega-3 essential fatty acids, ?good? fats that have been shown to have heart-healthy effects. Each tablespoon of ground flaxseed contains about 1.8 grams of plant omega-3s.
    • Lignans, which have both plant estrogen and antioxidant qualities. Flaxseed contains 75-800 times more lignans than other plant foods.
    • Fiber. Flaxseed contains both the soluble and insoluble types.

    The Health Benefits of Flax

Although Lilian Thompson, PhD, an internationally known flaxseed researcher from the University of Toronto, says she wouldn?t call any of the health benefits of flax ?conclusively established,? research indicates that flax?s possible health benefits include reducing the risks of certain cancers as well as cardiovascular disease and lung disease. Here are more details:

    Cancer

Recent studies have suggested that flaxseed may have a protective effect against cancer, particularly breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer. At least two of the components in flaxseed seem to contribute, says Kelley C. Fitzpatrick, MSc, director of health and nutrition with the Flax Council of Canada.

In animal studies, the plant omega-3 fatty acid found in flaxseed, called ALA, inhibited tumor incidence and growth.

Further, the lignans in flaxseed may provide some protection against cancers that are sensitive to hormones without interfering with the breast cancer drug tamoxifen. Some studies have suggested that exposure to lignans during adolescence helps reduce the risk of breast cancer and may also increase the survival of breast cancer patients, Thompson says.

Lignans may help protect against cancer by:

    • Blocking enzymes that are involved in hormone metabolism.
    • Interfering with the growth and spread of tumor cells.

Some of the other components in flaxseed also have antioxidant properties, which may contribute to protection against cancer and heart disease.

    Cardiovascular Disease

Research suggests that plant omega-3s help the cardiovascular system via several different mechanisms, including anti-inflammatory action and normalizing the heartbeat, Fitzpatrick says. New research also suggests significant blood pressure-lowering effects of flaxseed, which may be due to both the omega-3 fatty acids as well as the amino acid groups found in flaxseed.

Several studies have suggested that diets rich in flaxseed omega-3s help prevent hardening of the arteries and keep plaque from being deposited in the arteries, partly by keeping white blood cells from sticking to the blood vessels? inner linings.

?Lignans in flaxseed have been shown to reduce atherosclerotic plaque buildup by up to 75%,? Fitzpatrick says.

Because plant omega-3s may also play a role in maintaining the heart?s natural rhythm, they may be useful in treating arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) and heart failure, although more research is needed on this.

Eating flaxseed daily may help your cholesterol levels, too. Small particles of LDL or ?bad? cholesterol in the bloodstream have been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. A French-Canadian study in menopausal women reported a decrease in these small LDL particles after the women ate 4 tablespoons of ground flaxseed daily for a year. Fitzpatrick says the cholesterol-lowering effects of flaxseed are the result of the synergistic benefits of the omega-3 ALA, fiber, and lignans.

    Diabetes

Preliminary research also suggests that daily intake of the lignans in flaxseed may modestly improve blood sugar (as measured by hemoglobin A1c blood tests in adults with type 2 diabetes).

    Inflammation

Two components in flaxseed, ALA and lignans, may reduce the inflammation that accompanies certain illnesses (such as Parkinson?s disease and asthma) by helping to block the release of certain pro-inflammatory agents, Fitzpatrick says.

The plant omega-3 ALA has been shown to decrease inflammatory reactions in humans. And studies in animals have found that lignans can decrease levels of several pro-inflammatory agents.

Reducing inflammatory reactions associated with plaque buildup in the arteries may be another way flaxseed helps prevent heart attack and strokes.

    Hot Flashes

One preliminary study on menopausal women, published in 2007, reported that 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed mixed into cereal, juice, or yogurt twice a day cut the women?s hot flashes in half. And the intensity of their hot flashes dropped by 57%. The women noticed a difference after taking the daily flaxseed for just one week, and achieved the maximum benefit within two weeks.

But at the 2011 meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Mayo Clinic researchers reported there was no significant reduction in hot flashes between postmenopausal women and breast cancer patients eating a bar containing 410 milligrams of phytoestrogens from ground flaxseed and the group eating a placebo bar.

The results, says Thompson, are not surprising because other previous studies have shown that flaxseed reduces hot flashes but the effect does not differ significantly compared to placebo. This is a perfect example of why it is ideal to include a placebo ?control? group when studying a food or diet effect on menopausal symptoms.

There are plenty of other reasons for perimenopausal women to include ground flaxseed in their daily diet, and if it happens to appear to reduce the number or severity of their hot flashes through a real or placebo effect, perhaps that is just icing on the cake.

    Flaxseed Isn?t a Magic Bullet

It?s tempting to think of flaxseed as a super food due to so many potential health benefits. But keep in mind there is no magic food or nutrient that guarantees improved health.

What matters is consistently making great dietary choices as part of an overall healthy lifestyle.

    Who Shouldn?t Use Flaxseed?

?Until more is known, Thompson says pregnant women and possibly breastfeeding mothers should not supplement their diets with ground flaxseed.

?Our own animal studies showed that flaxseed exposure during these stages may be protective against breast cancer in the offspring, but a study of another investigator showed the opposite effect,? Thompson says.

    Tips for Using Flaxseed

Many experts believe it?s better to consume flaxseed than flax oil (which contains just part of the seed) so you get all the components. But stay tuned as researchers continue to investigate.

?Ground flaxseed, in general, is a great first choice but there may be specific situations where flax oil or the lignans (taken in amounts naturally found in flaxseed) might be as good,? Thompson says.

And how much flaxseed do you need? The optimum dose to obtain health benefits is not yet known. But 1-2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed a day is currently the suggested dose, according to the Flax Council of Canada.

Here are more tips for using, buying, and storing flaxseed:

    • Buy it ground or grind it yourself. Flaxseed, when eaten whole, is more likely to pass through the intestinal tract undigested, which means your body doesn?t get all the healthful components. If you want to grind flaxseed yourself, those little electric coffee grinders seem to work best.
    • Milled = ground = flax meal. Don?t be confused by the different product names for ground flaxseed. Milled or ground flaxseed is the same thing as flax meal.
    • Buy either brown or golden flaxseed. Golden flaxseed is easier on the eyes, but brown flaxseed is easier to find in most supermarkets. There is very little difference nutritionally between the two, so the choice is up to you.
    • Find it in stores or on the Internet. Many supermarket chains now carry ground flaxseed (or flaxmeal). It?s usually in the flour or ?grain? aisle or the whole-grain cereal section, often sold in 1-pound bags. You can also find it in health food stores, or order it through various web sites.
    • Check the product label. When buying products containing flaxseed, check the label to make sure ground flaxseed, not whole flaxseed, was added. Flaxseed is a featured ingredient in cereals, pasta, whole grain breads and crackers, energy bars, meatless meal products, and snack foods.
    • Add flaxseed to a food you habitually eat. Every time you have a certain food, like oatmeal, smoothies, soup, or yogurt, stir in a couple tablespoons of ground flaxseed. Soon it will be a habit and you won?t have to think about it, you?ll just do it.
    • Hide flaxseed in dark, moist dishes. The dishes that hide flaxseed the best usually have a darkly colored sauces or meat mixtures. No one tends to notice flaxseed when it?s stirred into enchilada casserole, chicken parmesan, chili, beef stew, meatloaf or meatballs. For a 4-serving casserole, you can usually get away with adding 2-4 tablespoons of ground flaxseed. For a dish serving 6-8, use 4-8 tablespoons.
    • Use it in baking. Substitute ground flaxseed for part of the flour in recipes for quick breads, muffins, rolls, bread, bagels, pancakes, and waffles. Try replacing 1/4 to 1/2 cup of the flour with ground flaxseed if the recipe calls for 2 or more cups of flour.
    • Keep it in the freezer. The best place to store ground flaxseed is the freezer. Freeze pre-ground flaxseed in the bag you bought it in, or in a plastic sealable bag if you ground it yourself. The freezer will keep the ground flax from oxidizing and losing its nutritional potency.
    • Whole flaxseed keeps longer. The outside shell in whole flaxseed appears to keep the fatty acids inside well protected. It?s a good idea to keep your whole flaxseed in a dark, cool place until you grind it. But as long as it is dry and of good quality, whole flaxseed can be stored at room temperature for up to a year.
