Fisker Automotive Appoints Tom LaSorda as Chief Executive ...

Tom LaSorda, the former Chrysler and General Motors executive who joined Fisker Automotive in December as a vice chairman and adviser, will become Fisker?s new chief executive, the company announced Tuesday. The start-up?s founder and chief executive, Henrik Fisker, stepped down to serve as executive chairman.

?I will be very involved in design and styling and spend a lot of time building the brand,? Mr. Fisker said during a conference call.

Mr. LaSorda was the chief executive of Chrysler during its sale in 2007 to Cerberus Capital Management and previously spent over two decades at G.M., which included tenures at Buick and Opel. During Tuesday?s call, he said he personally invested in Fisker ?to show how committed I am and how much confidence I have in the company going forward.?

Fisker received a $529 million loan from the Energy Department in 2009 to complete work on the Karma sedan, currently in production in Finland, and to develop a smaller model, code-named Project Nina, to be built at a former G.M. plant in Delaware. Fisker drew down $193 million of the loan, but the company stopped receiving federal funds in May 2011 after it failed to meet loan benchmarks. In February, the company laid off more than 60 workers at its California headquarters and Delaware factory, and said it was working with the federal agency to renegotiate the terms of the loan.

?The D.O.E. funding has been played a lot in the media,? Mr. LaSorda said during Tuesday?s call, before claiming that the company could be profitable as early as 2013 without the federal money, and with the Karma sedan as the company?s primary revenue generator. The Nina launch date was uncertain, he said, but development was continuing, despite the halt in federal financing.

Roger Ormisher, a Fisker spokesman, said in a telephone interview after the conference call that talks were continuing with the Energy Department on ?agreeable milestones and deadlines.? He added, however, that the company was ?exploring other revenue sources? in the event the loan was not renewed. ?But we still have confidence that we can reach an agreement with the D.O.E.,? he said.

The Heart's Health Standards of Fitness and Fatness

It is a well established fact that fitness does play a huge role in keeping one?s health in check. The sad part is that people often times see fitness as something to be dived into by those who only want to stay slim, sexy and maintain or even form their six pack abs. Hence, majority of those filling in gym schedules are those who want to shed away those excess fats to turn their body waistline from an eight to a perfect size two. This has been one of the sad truths on how people perceive the value of fitness into their health and into their lives. Medical health researchers have come public to box out these pre-conceived stereotyped ideas with regards to fitness and establish a new definition for it. In truth, fitness and fatness holds the key health to a person?s heart and this would be explained further by this entry.

When a person ages, it is quite important to keep their fitness and weight gain in check. This is all because a decrease in fitness as well as accumulating more fat into the system would cause numerous problems to the pumping circulatory machine of the body. Researchers have delved into the deeper association of fitness and fatness with the heart?s condition. Studying a population of more than 3,100 healthy adult subjects, researchers have found out that those who keep improved or maintained their fitness levels were found to have less risk in developing heart diseases such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol compared to those who are slim or fat without keeping up their body fit or be active in a fitness routine. Such result was also seen in people who kept their weight in check regardless of fitness issue. Researchers have brought the truth that increased fitness levels over time do counter some of the ill effects of weight gain which eventually cause more heart and other problems to a particular person. At the very same time, losing touch with fitness is not a sin as long as people do keep their weight in moderation or maintain a healthy and proportional body weight with their height. Surely, with such results, researchers do emphasize to the public that keeping the heart in a healthy shape is not that difficult at all.

For overweight people, the best combination that you could adapt in your daily routine is to try to lose weight and increase your fitness level. If this is quite difficult to do or achieve (which it is!), then try maintaining your weight or fitness levels instead. Those who did not actually live to do such routine and stayed in their average unhealthy lifestyle did developed high blood pressure at a rate of four percent a year, high cholesterol at a rate of three percent a year and other metabolic syndrome at a rate of two percent a year. All this collecting of heart problems occurred in the span of six years. On the other hand, those participants who kept improving their fitness level as seen through a treadmill test, had lower incidence of acquiring such diseases. Specifically, they had 26% ? 30% lower risk of high blood pressure or high cholesterol and 42% ? 52% lower. The people who increased their percentage of body fat overtime, on the other hand, did develop heart risk factors and problems. In this description of results, researchers would like to reveal the evil truth that for every percent increase in a person?s body fat, there is three to eight percent increase in risk factors affecting one?s heart.

So, join the group of people who despite gaining weight but still maintained their fitness levels and be free of all the risk factors that would lead you into having a heart attack during your middle to old age years. For those people who are active, do stay active. For overweight people, do not despair as you can compensate for the weight by increasing your fitness. For those who exercise, continue to do so. Lastly, for those with sedentary lifestyle, try to do at least a fifteen to thirty minute brisk walking activity. Get the right fitness and weigh the right fatness and give your heart a healthy life in the process!

From Physorg:

On Sunday,?Google+ appeared to be available in China on some people?s mobile devices?but not on fixed computers ? a fact confirmed by some netizens on Obama?s page.

Others in China, however, were still unable to access the site, which remained blocked on their mobiles along with Facebook,?Twitter?and YouTube.

Some netizens urged Obama to help free activists such as blind lawyer Chen Guangcheng, who is currently under?house arrest, or Liu Xiaobo, the jailedNobel Peace Prize?winner.

PFT: Jets GM laments Sanchez's lack of improvement

Kansas City's Bowe makes a gain as Oakland's Tonga comes up short in Kansas City, MissouriReuters

Nearly six full days into the period for applying the franchise tag, no team has done it.? One league source suggested earlier this week that teams are holding off due to concerns that the players to be tagged haven?t been fully informed of the fact that this year?s franchise tenders will be considerably lower than last year?s numbers, given the new formula for calculating the amounts.

The theory is that the agents have yet to explain the situation to the players, hopeful that a long-term deal can be negotiated and/or that the team in question will decide not to use the tag on the player.? (In the case of Packers tight end Jermichael Finley, a two-year contract avoided a $4 million fight over whether he?s actually a tight end.)

But nine days remain before the tag window closes,? and Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that several specific players will have their ability to hit the open market limited by the tag.

They are:? Falcons cornerback Brent Grimes, Patriots receiver Wes Welker, Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe (pictured), Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson, 49ers safety Dashon Goldson, Cardinals defensive end Calais Cambpell, and Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

It?s widely believed that, if the Saints and Brees can work out a long-term deal, the Saints will use the franchise tag on guard Carl Nicks.

Schefter?s list of definites omits include several other prime candidates.? If the Ravens and running back Ray Rice don?t work out a long-term deal, Rice undoubtedly will be tagged.? Coach John Harbaugh essentially confirmed this at the Scouting Combine, saying that Rice will ?be making franchise-tag numbers, at least.?? Also, the Seahawks are expected to tag running back Marshawn Lynch, absent a long-term deal.? Ditto for the Bears and running back Matt Forte.

There are more.? It has been reported that the Redskins will tag tight end Fred Davis, notwithstanding his four-game suspension for smoking something that has more than four leaves.? Browns linebacker D?Qwell Jackson can expect the tag if he doesn?t do a new deal, and the Cowboys could decide to use the tag on linebacker Anthony Spencer.? There are conflicting reports on whether the Bills will use the tag on receiver Stevie Johnson.? The Lions are expected to tag defensive end Cliff Avril, if they can?t work out a new contract.

Kickers will get in on the action, too.? Matt Prater of the Broncos, Connor Barth of the Buccaneers, and Josh Scobee of the Jaguars are expected to be tagged absent new deals.

In Houston, tagging Mario Williams would result in a cap number that exceeds $21 million.? Thus, the Texas are more likely to use it, if at all, on running back Arian Foster, a restricted free agent who otherwise could be had for a single first-round pick.

Other possibilities remain.? Though it has been reported that the Packers aren?t likely to use the tag on quarterback Matt Flynn, the Packers can decide to pull a Matt Cassel with Aaron Rodgers? backup at any time before the deadline comes.? It also has been reported that the Chargers have told receiver Vincent Jackson that use of the tag is ?improbable.?

It?s not improbable that we?ll have plenty of additional stories regarding players who are or may be or won?t be or haven?t been tagged between now and March 5.

Simple Home Improvement Project Schemes for Security and ...

It is not uncommon for people to have home improvement dreams. Nevertheless, as we all recognize, the one thing that usually gets in our way is know-how and price. Therefore, with just a little bit of searching and imagination, many conundrums can be worked out. Ponder over what all is feasible on a smaller scale; you don?t have to completely redo a room.

Your children?s rooms can actually be dramatically improved by following a few simple tips regarding home decor. For starters, get some wallpaper, and some wallpaper trim, and change the way the walls of the room look. Many different themes and colors are made specifically for children. Simply find a pattern that is appropriate for yours.

You can locate contrivances that will switch the lights both on and off. This is something that will be very easy and will not cost very much at all. Besides, you will be helping to minimize your energy costs.

Most people don?t realize that the struggling economy is directly related to our current high level of crime. It is because of this high crime rate that a small-scale security system should be installed at your home. If you have outdoor lights, you might want to switch them over to motion detector lights for security reasons.

Depending upon the sensitivity of the lights, they should turn on almost instantly when someone walks by. You can record videos and take pictures of what is going on outside of your home. This information is sent to and stored on a remote monitor. This way, when something happens outside of your house, you can see it from inside.

We have just shared with you two home improvement ventures that are quick and simple. The third requires you to do a little more, plus you might not feel very safe when it comes to doing your own electrical work.

But the job is small, and any electrician can get it done in under an hour if everything is installed. When doing electrical work, we always tell people to use every safety provision they possibly can. A further point is that a licensed electrician is the best route whenever you are adding in new wiring or any kind of electrical appliance.

2 US troops shot in Kabul; NATO pulls workers

KABUL, Afghanistan ? A gunman killed two American military advisers with shots to the back of the head Saturday inside a heavily guarded ministry building, and NATO ordered military workers out of Afghan ministries as protests raged for a fifth day over the burning of copies of the Quran at a U.S. army base.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the Interior Ministry attack, saying it was retaliation for the Quran burnings, after the U.S. servicemen ? a lieutenant colonel and a major ? were found dead on the floor of an office that only people who know a numerical combination can get into, Afghan and Western officials said.

The top commander of U.S. and NATO forces recalled all international military personnel from the ministries, an unprecedented action in the decade-long war that highlights the growing friction between Afghans and their foreign partners at a critical juncture in the war.

The U.S.-led coalition is trying to mentor and strengthen Afghan security forces so they can lead the fight against the Taliban and foreign troops can go home. That mission, however, requires a measure of trust at a time when anti-Western sentiment is at an all-time high.

Afghan Defense Minister Gen. Abdul Rahim Wardak called U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta to apologize for the shooting and offer his condolences, Pentagon press secretary George Little said in a statement released in Washington.

?This act is unacceptable and the United States condemns it in the strongest possible terms,? Little said.

Security is tight in the capital, which is covered in snow, and foreigners working at the U.S. Embassy and at international organizations have been banned from leaving their compounds.

U.S. officials said they were searching for the assailant, who has not been identified by name or nationality.

The two American service members were found by another foreigner who went into the room, according to the Afghan official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to disclose details about the shootings. They were shot in the back of the head, according to Western officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the information. Authorities were poring over security camera video for clues, the Afghan official said.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid identified the shooter as one of their sympathizers, Abdul Rahman. He said an accomplice inside the ministry helped Rahman get inside the compound to kill the Americans in retaliation for the Quran burnings.

?After the attack, Rahman informed us by telephone that he was able to kill four high-ranking American advisers,? Mujahid said. The Taliban often inflate death tolls and sometimes claim responsibility for killings they did not conduct.

Little, the Pentagon press secretary, said Wardak indicated that President Hamid Karzai was assembling religious leaders and other senior Afghan officials to take urgent steps to protect coalition forces.

U.S. Gen. John Allen, the top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, met with Afghan Interior Minister Bismullah Khan Mohammadi, who offered both his condolences to the families of the victims and his apologies, Little said.

Afghanistan?s interior and defense ministers are expected in Washington next week.

Allen said he recalled all NATO personnel from the ministries ?for obvious force protection reasons? but also said the alliance remains committed to its partnership with the Afghan government. NATO forces have advisers embedded in many Afghan ministries. The advisers are helping to develop the ministries so that Afghans can take the lead by the end of 2014, when foreign combat forces are to transfer control of security to Afghan security forces.

At least 28 people have been killed and hundreds wounded since Tuesday, when it first emerged that Qurans and other religious materials had been thrown into a fire pit used to burn garbage at Bagram Air Field, a large U.S. base north of Kabul.

President Barack Obama and other U.S. officials have apologized for what they said was a mistake, but their regrets have not quelled the deadly protests.

An Afghan soldier turned his gun on foreign troops, killing two American soldiers, during one riot outside a U.S. base in Nangarhar province on Thursday. It was the latest in a rising number of incidents where Afghan soldiers or policemen, or gunmen wearing their uniforms, have killed NATO forces. Last month, France suspended its training program and threatened to withdraw its forces from Afghanistan a year ahead of schedule after an Afghan soldier shot and killed four French soldiers on a base in the east.

Karzai has said that the Afghan people have a right to protest the Quran burnings, but he urged them to demonstrate peacefully and refrain from destroying property. In a statement on Saturday, Karzai urged Afghan security forces to be patient with the protesters.

Hundreds of demonstrators staged peaceful protests in Afghanistan, but ones in Laghman, Kunduz and Logar provinces turned violent.

?The culprits of the burning of the holy Quran should be arrested and hanged to death in public,? said Mohammad Karim, one of 1,000 protesters who burned tires and threw stones at Afghan police in Mohammad Agha district of Logar province, south of Kabul. ?We don?t accept it when they say ?We apologize. We apologize.? We don?t want Americans here at all.?

Laghman provincial police chief Abdul Rahman Sarjang said about 1,000 protesters threw stones at Afghan security forces, smashed windows of government buildings and tried to attack the nearby governor?s house in the provincial capital of Mehterlam.

In Kunduz, the capital of Kunduz province in northeastern Afghanistan, more than 1,000 protesters threw rocks at government buildings and a U.N. office, said Sarwer Hussaini, a spokesman for the provincial police. He said the police fired into the air to try to disperse the crowd. Dr. Saad Mukhtar, health department director in Kunduz, said at least three protesters died and 50 others were injured in the melee.

In a statement, the U.N. mission in Afghanistan said the U.N. had deep respect for the Islamic faith and understood why Muslims were upset about the desecration of their holy book, but urged the demonstrators to exercise self-restraint and not let militants use the protests to foment violence.

Williams also recorded the best mark in the world for 2011, won the Samsung Diamond League Series and was named the Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year by USATF.

Williams is clearly riding the momentum in 2012 as he has already claimed victories at the U.S. Open and Millrose Games. Williams is currently No. 1 in the U.S. and No. 6 in the world on the top marks lists. Williams will be looking for his third U.S. indoor title in a row, but will have to hold off Olympians Andra Manson and Jamie Nieto as well as collegiate standouts Erik Kynard of Kansas State and James Harris of Mississippi State.

Taylor and Claye face-off in triple jump
They may be young, but defending world champion Taylor and former Florida teammate and world bronze medalist Will Claye are sure to put on a show in the men?s triple jump. The two met at the USATF Classic where Claye was victorious and leaped to a world leading mark of 17.39m/57-0.75. The men have competed head-to-head in the triple jump 22 times, with an even split of 11 times that one has bested the other.

Claye is also slated to double in the men?s long jump where he will face the silver medalist from the IAAF World Championsips in the decathlon, Ashton Eaton.

Top 4 men in the world meet in the shot
Team USA can only send three shot putters to the IAAF World Indoor Championships and to the Olympic Games, but the top four athletes in the world all have the American flag next to their name. With no one wanting to be the odd man out, competition among Resse Hoffa, Ryan Whiting, Christian Cantwell and Adam Nelson is sure to be intense all year. All four men have won at least one USA Indoor title. Hoffa is currently atop the world list with his mark of 21.87m/71-9. Whiting has won two stops of this year?s Visa Championship Series with his victories at the U.S. Open and USATF Classic, while Nelson won the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix.

In other events, A.G. Kruger will seek his seventh indoor title in the men?s weight throw, with an entry mark nearly two meters farther than the rest of the field. In the men?s pole vault, three men have all previously won the USA Indoor title: Mark Hollis, Jeremy Scott and Brad Walker. Walker enters the meet with the best mark of the field at 5.80m/19-0.25.

CORRECTED-UPDATE 1-EU seeks legal opinion on global ...

Wed Feb 22, 2012 1:38pm EST

(Clarifies ACTA role in 6th paragraph)

By Claire Davenport

BRUSSELS Feb 22 (Reuters) ? The European Union?s
executive said on Wednesday it would refer a disputed global
agreement to tackle online piracy to the bloc?s highest court to
check whether it complies with EU fundamental rights.

The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, which also aims to
cut trademark theft, sparked protests across Europe this month
over fears of online censorship and increased surveillance.

EU members Germany, Slovakia, Estonia, Cyprus and the
Netherlands have refused to sign the agreement on the grounds
that it endangered freedom of speech and privacy. Poland,
Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Latvia have expressed concerns
about the agreement?s impact.

?This morning, my fellow commissioners have discussed and
agreed in general with my proposal to refer the ACTA agreement
to the European Court of Justice,? EU trade chief Karel De Gucht
said.

?We are planning to ask Europe?s highest court to assess
ACTA?s compatibility with the EU?s fundamental rights and
freedoms, such as freedom of expression and information or that
of protection,? he told a regular news briefing.

Among other measures, ACTA asks Internet providers to
cooperate with national authorities to crackdown on online
piracy.

Since talks on ACTA began in Geneva in June 2008, Internet
lobbies and health campaigners have rallied against it, saying
that overly strict controls of copyright would exclude people
from the Internet and prevent developing countries from
accessing generic medicines.

The European Commission on Wednesday stood by its decision
to ratify ACTA, but said the plethora of complaints against the
agreement prompted its decision to refer it to the European
court.

?Intellectual property is Europe?s main raw material, but
the problem is that we currently struggle to protect it outside
the European Union. This hurts our companies, destroys jobs and
harms our economies,? De Gucht said. ?ACTA will not censor
websites or shut them down.?

Publish lethal flu virus work, says WHO

BATTLES continue over whether or not to publish research in which H5N1 bird flu transmitted readily among mammals.

Last week, a group of flu virologists, public health experts from countries where H5N1 circulates, bioethicists and the World Health Organization advised that the work should be published - even though the top US biosecurity panel has advised against it.

The US National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB) feared publication would hand hostile forces a fearsome bioweapon. The WHO, which hosted the meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, decided it was impossible to stop publication yet make details of the work available to protect public health. New Scientist has found that publication might add little to what is already openly available in the scientific literature.

H5N1 has killed over half the people known to have caught it since it spread worldwide in birds in 2004. Inability to pass readily between people has so far kept it from going pandemic. The current dispute concerns two pieces of research that created H5 viruses that spread through the air among ferrets - the best test-animal - like normal flu.

Ron Fouchier and colleagues at the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, created transmissible H5N1 by putting two mutations into the HA surface protein of an H5N1 virus, and one into its polymerase enzyme, before exposing ferrets to it. It spontaneously acquired two more significant mutations, and remained lethal. In the other research under scrutiny, Yoshi Kawaoka at the University of Wisconsin-Madison also created transmissible H5 flu.

However, a paper that shows how to makes H5 readily transmissible had already been published in September last year by Reuben Donis and colleagues at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia. His team equipped a different H5N1 with the same two mutations as Fouchier. He also added a third mutation, and switched other genes to make it transmissible among ferrets.

While Fouchier concluded from his work that transmissible H5N1 might readily emerge naturally, Donis said it could be difficult. "Research must continue for such differences to be resolved, and for the world to understand the threat posed by H5N1," says Ab Osterhaus, head of the Rotterdam lab. Yet the dispute over publication of Fouchier's and Kawaoka's papers has led to an indefinite moratorium on such research.

The journals Nature and Science both agreed to publish redacted versions of the papers, without details of the methods or mutations - but only if means were found to get those details to the people who need them. These include researchers working with H5N1, who must guard against inadvertently creating such viruses, and public health agencies.

Last week Keiji Fukuda of the WHO said there was "unanimous" agreement that this could not readily be done. He said it was impossible to decide who should grant access to the information.

US officials at the meeting stated that they still supported the NSABB's stance, although Fukuda says everyone there agreed there was no way to meet the journals' conditions. The group advised postponing publication while it raised "understanding in non-scientific groups" about the risks. Tony Fauci, head of the US National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Disease, says there is "no way we can require the journals not to publish".

Meanwhile, back in the pig pen

While the world's flu scientists and biowarriors face off over publishing research on H5N1 bird flu, other flu continues to evolve among pigs. And it may just have taught us something disconcerting about bird flu.

The "triple reassortants" of bird, pig and human flu viruses circulating in pigs were the sourceMovie Camera of the 2009 human pandemic. Some carry surface proteins from human H3N2 flu from the early 1990s, and few people born since then have antibodies to them. In the past two years 17 people are known to have caught these viruses from pigs, but it never spread far.

Terrence Tumpey at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, can't explain why. He has shown that the pig viruses from those human cases bind to human receptors, spread readily among ferrets, and replicate better than current human H3N2 viruses in human airway cells in culture (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, DOI: 10.1073/pnas.1119945109). This suggests that adapting to humans is only part of the pandemic process. Some virologists argue that because transmissible H5N1, such as the viruses created in the lab (main story), has not been seen in nature, it cannot occur. But perhaps it hasn't yet had the opportunity: an adapted virus may need other things to take off, such as enough susceptible humans, says Tumpey.

Slug It Out Today, Triumph in May Tough the Cold and Ice for a ...

A runner rains in February in Montpelier. Photo by Jeb Wallace-Brodeur.

Winter?s mean streets are often too much for some automobiles. But when you?re aiming for a spring marathon, you have to tough it out and hit the pavement?now.

Most marathon training plans are about 16 to 20 weeks long. April and May kick off each year?s marathon season, and many local runners have their sights set on two biggies. Boston, the granddaddy of marathons, is held on Patriots Day (April 16), while Burlington?s own Vermont City is held on May 27, during Memorial Day weekend. Those training for Boston have most likely already begun training. If the KeyBank Vermont City Marathon is your race, the time is now to don neck warmers and running tights, and get out there.

Now, you say? In the dead of winter? That?s right. Spring marathoners have to be motivated excuse-busters because February and March present plenty of excuses for why not to run. ?Weather, cold, snow, darkness, and life in general can all make it tough,? says endurance athlete, running coach, and Brooks I.D. (that?s ?Inspire Daily?) runner Kelly Wilson of Essex.

Wilson runs 12 months a year, and she trains runners. Her best advice for finding the inspiration to run during the cold and lonely winter months is that the motivation does not always need to come from within. ?Find a group,? she says. In particular, it?s nice to have companionship during the weekly long runs of a marathon-training program. Most running groups meet on weekends with the expressed purpose of helping fellow members get through their long runs. Groups also become great places to find buddies with whom to do short midweek runs.

When Wilson assesses one of her runners, the first question she asks is, where is that runner when he or she starts preparing for a race? Anyone can look up a marathon training calendar online. If a runner is already running 12 miles at a time, then Wilson wouldn?t start at the beginning of a schedule that calls for a 6-mile-long run in week one.

Training now means a better chance of being successful in springtime marathons. Photo by Lee Krohn.

Secondly, she looks at each individual?s situation. What work commitments, family commitments, and so forth, does a person have? Runners have to be realistic and customize their training calendar to their lifestyles. Are they doing all of their runs before or after work? Do they travel all winter? Do they have a treadmill at work? All of these will affect marathon training this winter, so Wilson customizes her training plans for the individual.

Many runners think they can beat the cold by running on a treadmill. Is it realistic to think that a treadmill runner will log the hours necessary for marathon training on a machine?
Wilson isn?t sure. ?I try to train outside for an event that will be held outside,? she says. She knows runners who use indoor tracks when the weather gets especially harsh. There aren?t that many indoor tracks in Vermont, though, outside of the University of Vermont, Indoor Recreation of Orleans County, and the Sports and Fitness Edge. ?Someone would probably make a million if they built one,? Wilson says.

One challenge that VCM?and other spring marathons in the Northeast?present is unpredictable race-day weather. Any VCM or Boston veteran will tell you that the weather has ranged from freezing to cold and rainy to sunny, hot, and humid. Wilson?s advice: take advantage of weather challenges during your training. ?In March and April, you may not want to run in the rain,? she says. Well, race day may very well be a rainy day, so it makes sense to take advantage of rainy training opportunities.

Likewise, it is difficult to prepare for a warm VCM. Memorial Day weekend could be summerlike?the opposite of VCM?s February, March, and April ramp-up. ?If there?s a warm snap, and you usually run early in the mornings,? says Wilson, ?maybe think about postponing your run one day until the heat of the day.? This way, she says, you get at least some preparation in warmer temperatures. Wilson knows a thing or two about trying to prepare for a warmer-weather event in a Vermont climate; , she was getting ready to run the Coastal Challenge Route of Fire in Costa Rica, a six-day event covering 250 kilometers.

While Wilson worries about a winter training program for a run in the tropics, most marathon runners here have concerns that are closer to home. Like what to wear while training. Wilson dresses in layers, so she can take off a layer once she?s underway. ?The first 10 minutes are always the worst,? she says. Many people wear traction devices like Yaktrax and Icespike, but Wilson does not; she is comfortable training in trail shoes. If you are training before or after work, you are definitely accustomed to running in the dark. Reflectors and lights?both in your front and back?are a must; drivers simply will not see you otherwise.

Running springtime marathons like Boston and VCM are great ways to usher in summer. But springtime marathons require wintertime preparations. Running a marathon requires dedication, toughness, and determination. And where do runners develop these traits? In the long, cold, and (sometimes) lonely months prior to race day. It?s in these months leading up to a marathon event when the real race is run.

World News - Red Cross says negotiating pause to fighting in Syria ...

Activists in embattled cities such as Homs say food is running out and doctors lack medicine to treat the wounded.

By msnbc.com news services

Updated 10 p.m. ET

GENEVA -- The International Committee of the Red Cross says it is negotiating with Syrian authorities and opposition fighters to broker a cease-fire in some of the most violence-torn areas.

Meantime, activists say Syrian forces opened fire with live ammunition on demonstrators in Damascus overnight, wounding at least four, Reuters reported.

"We are currently discussing several possibilities with all those concerned, and it includes a cessation of fighting in the most affected areas," Red Cross spokeswoman Carla Haddad told The Associated Press.

She said the talks weren't aimed at resolving entrenched political differences, but to allow the humanitarian agency enough time to deliver aid to civilians hardest hit by the conflict.

"The idea is to be able to facilitate swift access to people in need," Haddad said.

Activists in embattled cities such as Homs say food is running out and doctors lack medicine to treat the wounded.

Violence in capital
Demonstrations and clashes with security forces have hit Damascus in the past week, undermining President Bashar al-Assad's argument that an 11-month uprising has been the work of saboteurs and limited mainly to the provinces.

International diplomacy showed no sign of finding a solution, as Western powers and the Arab League prepared a meeting of "Friends of Syria" Friday to pressure Assad to step down, while Russia and China backed Assad's reform plans, derided by Syria's opposition.

"There were hundreds of demonstrators at the main square of Hajar al-Aswad (neighborhood), and suddenly buses of security police and shabbiha (pro-Assad militia) turned up and started firing into the crowd," activist Abu Abdallah told Reuters by telephone.

He said the four wounded were taken to be treated in homes.

Footage posted on YouTube, purportedly taken before the shooting, showed a crowd marching in Hajar al-Aswad carrying placards in support of the besieged city of Homs and singing "Eyes are shedding tears for the martyrs among Syria's youth."

Earlier, opposition youths unfurled a pre-Assad era national flag over a road bridge at the edge of the capital, YouTube footage showed. That followed a weekend that saw one of the biggest demonstrations yet in the capital as the uprising neared its first anniversary.

?Cut off from the outside world?
Opposition activists said five people had been killed in government shelling of Homs's Baba Amro district on Monday, adding to a reported death toll of several hundred since the operation began there on February 3.

Activists in the western city of Hama said troops, police and militias had set up dozens of roadblocks, cutting neighborhoods off from each other.

A flood of military reinforcements has been a prelude to previous offensives by Assad's regime, which has tried to use its overwhelming firepower to crush an opposition that has been bolstered by defecting soldiers and hardened by 11 months of street battles.

A Free Syrian Army fighter stands guard in Idlib in northwestern Syria, near the Turkish border, on Sunday.

"Hama is cut off from the outside world. There are no landlines, no mobile phone network and no Internet. House-to-house arrests take place daily and sometimes repeatedly in the same neighborhoods," an opposition statement said.

Rebel fighters have been attacking shabbiha militiamen while avoiding open confrontations with the armored forces that had massed around Hama, a city north of Homs on the Damascus-Aleppo highway.

The government restricts foreign media access in Syria, making it hard to verify the activists' reports independently.

Security forces have killed more than 5,000 people, according to human rights groups, in a campaign to crush the revolt while the Assad government says more than 2,000 soldiers and security agents have been killed.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Online Retail versus Brick and Mortar | Small Business and ...

If you?re contemplating starting a retail business, you may be on the fence about whether to make it a virtual store or a brick-and-mortar. Here are the pros and cons of each to help you in your decision.

Online Retail Benefits

The really wonderful thing about starting an online retail business is how easy and affordable it is. As long as you?ve got your inventory and an ecommerce website, ?you?re ready to go. You can operate from anywhere, and you don?t have to pay high-priced commercial rental rates.

Even if you don?t have a fancy ecommerce website, there are easy all-in-one options available for you, such as Amazon, Etsy and eBay. Each offers built in ecommerce solutions and credit card processing. All you have to do is plug in your product descriptions and upload a photo. The bonus is that these sites get a ton of traffic, so you?ll get more exposure than you would by starting from scratch with your own site.

Getting found online is also fairly easy, and definitely affordable, if you use social media and internet marketing.

Online Retail Drawbacks

Some items don?t sell as well online as they do in person. If you?ve got high end handmade crafts or art, you can post them to Etsy, but it might be months before anyone stumbles upon your glassblown vintage owl collection. If you sell in a category with a low search rate, you may find an online ecommerce business less successful than a physical storefront.

While marketing your website is easy, it does take effort (really that?s the case with any business, online or otherwise). If considering starting an ecommerce site, make sure you?ve got time and budget to dedicate to marketing it.

Brick-and-Mortar Benefits

Having the perfect store nestled in a row of eclectic shops and restaurants can help you connect with your community. Your shop can be a hangout spot for your customers, who are more likely to buy from you repeatedly if your store is homey enough to make them feel comfortable.

Being located near other high-traffic retail can give you a boost in sales that you wouldn?t see online. Consider this when shopping for real estate.

Brick-and-Mortar Drawbacks

There?s one thing that?s hard to really grasp before you?re knee-deep in debt for your retail store: it?s expensive. You?ve got your rent, inventory, salaries and other overhead, and you have to sell enough product to cover all of these expenses each month. Even more if you actually want to turn profit. You lock yourself in to years of expenses once you sign that lease, so it?s a commitment you have to be willing to accept long-term.

Sometimes there are quirks about the location you choose that you don?t see initially, like a difficult-to-maneuver parking lot, or proximity to a business that drives yours away (tattoo parlor next to your doll shop?). These can cause you stress and financial troubles that force you to come up with a better solution sooner rather than later.

Whichever option you choose, do your homework on what kind of investment you need, as well as what locations would be ideal for your company.

What Business Leaders Can Learn from the Decision to Put Jeremy ...

On February 4th the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association were at the bottom of the league?s standings having won just 8 of their first 23 games, a 35% winning percentage. The team has appeared in the NBA?s post-season playoff picture just once (2011) since 2004, and hasn?t won a game in the post-season since 2004.

Struggling on the court in this lockout shortened season and decimated by injuries Knicks coach Mike D?Antoni had no other option than to insert unknown, often overlooked and cast aside Jeremy Lin into the starting point guard position.

What has happened since is now known in New York and throughout the sports world as ?Linsanity,.? With Lin in the lineup the team has won 8 of 9 games putting itself back in the playoff picture. Lin has sparked the team scoring more points than any other player in the history of the NBA in his first four career starts. Over the ensuing five games holding now an average of 25 points and more than 9 assists in starting those 9 games since February 4th.

You may be asking yourself, what does all this have to do with business leadership, employee engagement and motivation? Plenty!

There are employees in your organization with untapped skills, talents and interests chomping at the bit to have something that inspires them to contribute at a higher level. It?s your job as the organization or team?s leader to tap into that dormant potential contribution.

If there is one thing Lin didn?t lack it was self-confidence and he was sitting on the benches of three NBA team chomping at the bit to be able to contribute in a way that could make a difference. He was only given a chance as a last resort. He was probably the last option D?Antoni had to save his job as the coach of the one of the highest valued franchises in professional basketball in the world?s largest market.

Lin has saved his coach?s job for a few more months and potentially, even years.

Earlier in my professional baseball career serving as the leader of my final team, I hired an individual, whose name is Steve, that my boss, the owner of the franchise didn?t want me to hire. Fortunately, despite having significant experience working with this individual he didn?t make it entirely clear to me that that was his position, but he strongly intimated that desire. At the end of the day he left the decision up to me.

In going through my hiring process, the interview and background due diligence not only could I not see a reason not to hire this individual, I thought his background, his skills, talents and attitude was just what we needed.

Despite being originally defined as a ?C? student, my boss? code for not being a high-performer, this individual proved my hiring decision to be right. It took at least 3 years for Steve and I to turn around the attitude of our boss and to have him see Steve as a high-performer with future potential within the organization.

Today, Steve is now president and ceo of one of the companies in that organization.

What it took to make my hiring decision work was a simple conversation offering Steve the opportunity to join me in the challenge of changing the attitude and impression of the person holding the key to our professional success at the time. Steve was more than up to the challenge.

There are many Steves in your organization, here are the steps to pull them out

  1. Raise the performance standards and expectations in your organization.
  2. Define the specific and related performance expectations you?d like to see from the individuals on your team.
  3. Create an inspiring reason and purpose for the change that will connect to every individual?s innate human need to make a difference.
  4. Have a candid, private conversation with each of the individuals, clearly articulating those new expectations and discussing how their higher level of contribution will make a difference and to whom that difference will be made
  5. Offer training, development, support and coaching to help them step up to the new role

Follow those 5-steps and I believe you will be pleasantly pleased by the response. And along the way you will be raising the self-esteem and self-confidence of those on your teams while improving performance results for your organization, just like the NY Knicks are experiencing thanks to Jeremy Lin and Linsanity that has erupted this month!

If you?d like a model to follow that will support the five steps above, visit www.EmployeeMotivationEquation.com and download the free report and assessments there.

(AP) ? Yani Tseng watched Ai Miyazato's approach on the 18th hole of the LPGA Thailand and knew she had to come up with an equally impressive shot to avoid a possible playoff.

Tseng met the challenge with a shot fitting her No. 1 ranking, controlling the spin perfectly to set up a tap-in putt.

"It was an incredible shot. I think it's the shot of the week," Tseng said Sunday. "Especially, I saw that Ai hit it so close and I knew she was going to make that putt. So, I tell myself, 'I need to get this close.'"

The 23-year-old Taiwanese star successfully defended her title for her 13th LPGA Tour victory, matching Miyazato with birdies on the final two holes to hold off her Japanese friend by a stroke.

"It was tough," Tseng said about her approach on the par-5 18th. "I had 104 to the pin and a little uphill. I know my ball is going to spin a lot, so I just tried to keep it low and not spin too much. ... I was very proud of myself for hitting that shot into 18 and making birdie to win."

Tseng closed with a 6-under 66 to finish at 19-under 269 on the Pattaya Old Course at Siam Country Club. She opened with a 73, then shot consecutive 65s to enter the final round a shot behind Miyazato.

"I had some luck out there," Tseng said, pointing to the lucky Thai statue where she made a wish. "I shot 1 over the first round, but I came back very soon and played 20 under the next three days. I felt like I could improve a lot and I feel like something gave me luck."

She also visited the statue last year.

"I just wish I could win this tournament," she said.

Last year, Tseng won the event for the first of her seven 2011 LPGA Tour victories, including major victories in the LPGA Championship and Women's British Open. The five-time major champion finished the year with 12 worldwide victories. She has 33 career worldwide professional victories.

"I feel much more pressure coming into this year," Tseng said. "Last year, when I started, I was nothing. I was just in the top five in the world, but I don't have 12 wins or world No. 1 title. After last year, I have world No. 1 and I had 12 wins and that pressure keep going on and on."

Miyazato finished with a 67.

"Of course, Yani is No. 1, so I knew it wouldn't be easy today," Miyazato said. "I kind of expected her to play that way."

South Korea's Jiyai Shin, tied for the lead with Tseng after a birdie of her own on the par-4 17th, had a 67 to finish two strokes back.

Tseng eagled the par-5 opening hole and Miyazato had a birdie, leaving them tied at 15 under. Tseng took the lead with a birdie on the par-4 third, and added birdies on the par-4 sixth and par-5 seventh. At the turn, she had a three-stroke lead over Shin and four-shot advantage over Miyazato.

"I played really well on the front nine, but it was tough on the back nine, especially when you see Jiyai and Ai keep making birdies," Tseng said. "It got tight down the stretch. It was tough. I feel like I had lots of emotions today."

Shin, playing a group ahead of Tseng and Miyazato, birdied the par-4 10th to pull within two and gained another stroke when Tseng bogeyed the hole. Tseng pushed her lead to two with a birdie on the par-3 12th, but bogeyed the par-4 13th.

Miyazato birdied the 10th and pulled within one of Tseng with a birdie on the par-4 15th, then matched Tseng with a par on 16 and the birdies on 17 and 18.

"Overall, I played really well and I'm very happy that I could finish strong today," Miyazato said. "I really enjoyed playing with Yani, but next time I want to win."

South Korea's Amy Yang shot a 69 to finish fourth at 14 under.

Sixteen-year-old Thai amateur Ariya Jutanugarn followed her third-round 65 with a 74 to tie for 12th to 7 under. She played the final five holes in 4 over, making a double-bogey 7 on No. 18. Last year, Jutanugarn won the U.S. Junior Girls' Championship and was the Rolex Junior Player of the Year.

DIVOTS: Seventeen-year-old American Lexi Thompson had five back-nine birdies in a 66 to tie for 14th at 6 under. "I'm really happy with the way I'm hitting it," Thompson said. ... Second-ranked Suzann Pettersen had a 78 to drop into a tie for 21st at 4 under. She began the round four strokes out of the lead. ... Michelle Wie shot a 73 to tie for 38th at 1 over. ... Morgan Pressel had a hole-in-one with an 8-iron on the 136-yard eighth hole. She finished with a 71 to tie for 49th at 4 over.
