Celebs to Jessica Simpson: Where is the Baby?!

Jessica Simpson has been pregnant for so long, and is so enormous, fellow stars are on pins and needles wondering where that giant baby girl is.

Maybe it's the non-stop Jessica Simpson quotes concerning her pregnancy that have slowed. Maybe it's the rumor that she already gave birth (false).

Whatever the reason, some inquiring minds really want to know on Twitter.

"Has Jessica Simpson had that baby yet?! I'm anxious," Katy Perry wrote.

VERY Pregnant Jessica Simpson

Chelsea Handler was thinking the same thing. "How has jessica simpson still not given birth to this baby? I'm getting frightened," she wrote.

So are we. Simpson, who is still pregnant, announced her pregnancy on Halloween, six full months ago, well after tabloids got wind of it.

It's got to be due any minute now. Whenever little Maxi arrives, you can expect the fiancee of Eric Johnson to Tweet non-stop updates.

Seriously. This is a 31-year-old woman who has mused about her "swamp ass" and "the big O" of pregnant sex. There's no such thing as TMI.

The Worst Book Covers of All Time Have Destroyed My Faith In Humanity [Wtf]

The worst album covers of all time made me miss the good old times of record shops. These books, however, just scare me. They scare me because, with the advent of personal digital book publishing, things are probably going to get even worse. More »

Korean Christian Groups Call to Ban Lady Gaga, "Pornographic" Show

Lady Gaga is under fire in Korea - and not even from the Northern half.

Christian groups in South Korea called on Friday for the pop star to cancel her concert there, saying it's "pornographic" and pro-homosexuality.

South Korea's government has already bowed to public pressure and banned people under 18 from attending, but certain protesters said that was not enough.

"Even adults can't see her performance which is too homosexual and pornographic," said Rev. Yoon Jung-hoon, organizer of "Civilians Network against the Lady Gaga Concert."

"Some people can simply accept this as another culture but its impact is huge beyond art and debases religions."

The singer's hit song "Born This Way" celebrates the empowerment of gay men and women, something that many in South Korea, which is the second most Christian country in Asia after the Philippines, say is an immoral lifestyle.

No word if they've even heard the Lady Gaga hermaphrodite rumor.

The star has been in Seoul for close on a week as she kicks off her Asian "Born this Way" tour. So far, the backlash doesn't seem to have fazed her.

"Nervous for tonight. Hope I make little monsters happy and proud," she Tweeted a few hours before the concert kicked off.

Yoon's group claims to have collected 5,000 supporters on Facebook against the concert and some have also called for a boycott of the sponsor Hyundai.

"The Christian Council of Korea with 12 million Christians and 55,000 churches will take all kinds of measures such as boycotting Hyundai to root out this kind of obscene culture," the council said in a statement.

Yoon said he would attend the concert to "monitor" the much-anticipated performance for homosexual content that could corrupt young people.

Have fun with that.

ShelfX's Vending Fridge nixes the cashier, uses QR codes, RFID to 'know what you took'

Image

QR codes and RFID tags aren't uncommon when it comes to automated payment applications, and now Colorado-based ShelfX has purposed them for its new wireless-equipped Vending Fridges. Eliminating the need for a cashier -- or cash, for that matter -- each unit allows you to purchase any items packed inside by scanning a QR code with your phone (using the company's app) or an RFID badge. Upon presenting either method to the machine, it's able to tell who you are and unlocks its door. From there, you can grab whatever you'd like, while ShelfX automatically pulls funds your account for what's been removed. The system is also smart enough to know when goods are put back, so you won't have to worry about being charged while making up your mind. All of the money goes through ShelfX, allowing it to take "a small percentage" for itself before sending a monthly payment to owners. The Vending Fridge is currently on sale for $600, and a retrofitting kit for your own fridge is also available for half that amount -- no word on whether it has kid-blocking or crab-proofing options, though. You'll find more information in the press release just after the break.

Spinach-based solar cells get $90,000 development funds from EPA, Popeye delighted

Spinach-based solar cells get $90,000 development funds from EPA, Popeye delightedA biohybrid solar panel that substitutes expensive silicon components for a spinach protein has been granted some substantial Phase II funding from the EPA. Engineering students from the Vanderbilt School of Engineering managed to stand out from 44 other university teams vying for funding at the National Sustainable Design Expo held in Washington DC. The team's large-scale panel only ekes out a small amount of electricity from the photosynthetic proteins at the moment, but according to Professor Kane Jennings, the cash injection from the EPA will help achieve higher energy conversion ratios over the next few years. Perhaps you could try wrapping them up into giant 3D cubes, Professor.

Linux Foundation To Host Open Source Cloud Conference ?CloudOpen?

linux-foundationIt wasn't that long ago that I complained about cloud fragmentation issues. There were some interesting observations in the comments on that post. Now word comes that the Linux Foundation is hosting CloudOpen, a "new conference to advance openness in the cloud." Most of the major players are already committed to participating at CloudOpen: Canonical, Citrix, Dell, Eucalyptus, HP, IBM, Intel, OpenStack, Red Hat and SUSE. From the press release: "Designed for software developers and IT managers responsible for deploying and developing cloud solutions, CloudOpen will feature technical content that includes ... big data strategies and open cloud platforms and tools. This conference will also cover open source best practices and how they relate to topics such as company data and APIs."

MarkaVIP Secures $10 million As The Middle East Takes Off

Screen Shot 2012-04-25 at 15.57.20Online private sales burst onto the scene a few years ago in the shape of Vente Privee in Europe and, later, Gilt in the US. It's a model we all know and love - and it's rapidly proving a model with which emerging economies are, well, rather obsessed. I was just recently in Istanbul where you can almost throw a stone and be sure of hit a private sales startup entrepreneur. And from there, and across the Middle East and North Africa (known as MENA), online businesses are growing like weeds. And some investors know it. Thus today MarkaVIP, a runaway private sales success story in the Middle East has completed a $10 million Series B funding led by European venture firm Prime Ventures. It's joined buy participation from New York City-based Invus Financial Advisors (IFA), Antwerp-based Hummingbird Ventures, and San Francisco-based Lumia Capital.

Mathematic Proof That The Universe Had A Beginning [Space]

There are probably more theories floating around to explain the birth, life and death of the universe than for any other scientific concept. Some scientists champion the idea of the Big Bang that created everything around us, others postulate that that we live in a steady state universe with no beginning or end. Now, math has set one thing straight: our universe definitely had a start. More »
