Tensions mount as police grab protesters in China

NINGBO, China (AP) ? Thousands of protesters marched through an eastern Chinese city on Sunday, shouting for fellow citizens to join them in demanding that the government halt the expansion of a petrochemical factory because of pollution fears.

The demonstration in Ningbo city in wealthy Zhejiang province is the latest this year over fears of health risks from industrial projects, as Chinese who have seen their living standards improve become more outspoken against environmentally risky projects in their areas.

Such protests are exactly what the Chinese leadership does not want ahead of next month's once-a-decade transition of power, with stability being paramount.

"The government hides information from the people. They are only interested in scoring political points and making money," said one protester, Luo Luan, who works in the insurance industry. "They don't care about destroying the environment or damaging people's lives."

Hundreds of residents headed from a city square toward the offices of the municipal government early Sunday. They were stopped by police at the gate, where they shouted for the release of people reportedly detained a day earlier.

Tensions rose after about 200 riot police walked out of the gate, tore down banners that people had hung in trees and grabbed at least three protesters, carrying them into the government compound.

The protesters threw plastic bottles and chanted, "Release the people."

Riot police with batons later guarded the back of the government offices.

Some protesters marched away from the offices in an apparent effort to round up more support. Hundreds roamed along nearby shopping streets. Police diverted traffic to allow them to pass down a main road.

The protests began a few days earlier in the coastal district of Zhenhai, where the petrochemical factory is located. On Saturday they swelled and spread to the center of Ningbo city, whose officials oversee Zhenhai.

Residents reported that Saturday's protests involved thousands of people and turned violent after authorities used tear gas and arrested participants.

Authorities said "a few" people disrupted public order by staging sit-ins, unfurling banners, distributing fliers and obstructing roads. Authorities said that the proposed project was under evaluation and that the public was being given opportunities to offer its input.

The crowds in Ningbo are a slice of China's rising middle class that poses an increasingly boisterous challenge to the country's incoming leadership: Armed with expensive smartphones, Internet connectivity and higher expectations than the generations before them, their impatience with the government's customary lack of response is palpable in every fist pump and every rendition of the national anthem they shout.

A 30-year-old woman surnamed Wang said officers took her to a police station Saturday and made her sign a guarantee that she would not participate in any more protests, but she came back Sunday anyway.

"They won't even let us sing the national anthem," Wang said. "They kept asking me who the leader of the protests was and I said that this is all voluntary. We have no leader."

Marchers included the elderly and children, as well as some pet poodles. People held up smartphones and tablet computers recording the protest and tried to send information to others through mobile Internet connections.

In a sign that censors were at work, the name "Zhenhai" ? the city district where the factory is located ? was blocked on China's popular microblogging site Sina Weibo, and searches for "chemical expansion project" were greeted with the line that "Some search results are not shown according to regulations." Those that were visible included postings from media sites that said authorities were holding meetings to hear public opinion.

Some protesters wore face masks and shouted slogans including "Protect Ningbo" and "Return my health."

"We have to do this for our future and our family's future," said a 40-year-old protester surnamed Jing as she pointed to the smoggy air. "The sky was so clear when I was a child. Look at it now."

Another protester, Yu Yibing, said he wanted the factory to be closed, not expanded, and his 7-year-old son to grow up in a clean environment.

"As the common people, we need to live in a green environment. This is a reasonable request," Yu said. "But the government only puts out some statement and refuses to see us and also suppresses us. I don't know how else we can express our views."

The Zhenhai district government, which comes under the Ningbo government, said Ningbo's Communist Party chief, Wang Huizhong, and mayor, Liu Qi, had held discussions with local residents Saturday night.

A statement on the district government's website Sunday said the opinions and advice of the people who attended were "very helpful" to the party committee and municipal government's decision-making and that the expansion project was "at an early stage."

"We will further solicit opinions and respond to people's concerns and actively respond to people's reasonable requests and demands," the statement said.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the planned project is designed to produce 15 million tons of refined oil and 1.2 million tons of ethylene per year and belongs to Sinopec Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Co., which has invested 55.87 billion yuan ($8.9 billion).

Calls to Zhenhai police and the propaganda department of Ningbo police rang unanswered Sunday.

Past environmental protests have targeted a waste-water pipeline in eastern China and a copper plant in west-central China. A week ago, hundreds protested for several days in a small town on China's Hainan island over a coal-fired power plant.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers watched opponents panic when preparing for Robert Griffin III and vowed not to suffer the same identity crisis.

"We didn't want to get too creative," defensive end Brett Keisel said. "We just wanted to play the way we know how."

Besides, why mess with a good thing?

Wearing throwback jerseys that made them resemble hulking bumblebees, the Steelers swarmed Washington's precocious star in a 27-12 victory on Sunday.

Griffin completed just 16 of 34 passes for 177 yards and a score while managing 8 yards rushing, finding little room to showcase his brilliance against a unit used to having its way when a youngster is calling plays in the other huddle.

The Steelers (4-3) improved to 14-1 against rookie quarterbacks since 2004, doing to Griffin what they've done to the likes of Eli Manning and Joe Flacco.

"It is very frustrating," Griffin said. "You want to go out, be successful, execute plays and have everything work for you and then when you have a day like today when you have almost nothing work for you."

Griffin got little help from his receivers. The Redskins (3-5) dropped 10 passes and the Steelers kept the NFL's top rushing team under wraps despite playing without injured safety Troy Polamalu.

Washington ran for a season-low 86 yards while Griffin's longest run came on a seven-yard sprint in the first quarter.

"He wasn't running all over the place," Pittsburgh linebacker Larry Foote said. "The front seven got challenged by (Steelers coach) Mike (Tomlin) all week and they delivered."

Ben Roethlisberger had no such issues against Washington's depleted defense, throwing for 222 yards and three touchdowns as the Steelers won consecutive games for the first time this season.

"It's fun having so many weapons and being able to throw to anybody," said Roethlisberger, who spread 24 completions to nine different receivers.

Jonathan Dwyer added 107 yards rushing in his second NFL start while Heath Miller caught four passes for 46 yards and his sixth touchdown of the season. Pittsburgh scored on its first four possessions to take control early and had little trouble moving above .500.

Suddenly, the team that looked sluggish during early losses to Oakland and Tennessee appears to be its normal, dangerous self in a wide-open AFC.

"This is our story and we're writing it," Foote said.

Something Griffin is trying to do in the nation's capital. The second overall pick in last April's draft has taken the league by storm, his dazzling playmaking turning the moribund Redskins into one of the league's more compelling teams.

It all came to a crashing halt on a wet, raw day at Heinz Field.

Washington did its best to create space for Griffin, at one point sending him out as a wide receiver. He sprinted down the sideline but was flagged for pass interference while trying to grab Josh Morgan's wobbly pass, another mistake by the Redskins on an afternoon full of them

"I guess it was just a bad day for us," Washington wide receiver Leonard Hankerson said. "We didn't make those plays."

Even a pregame surprise from veteran linebacker London Fletcher didn't help. Fletcher overcame head and hamstring issues to play in his 232nd consecutive game, the longest active streak in the NFL. His presence, however, did little to buoy Washington's floundering defense against the balanced Steelers.

Roethlisberger continued to thrive in new offensive coordinator Todd Haley's system while Dwyer, starting in place of injured Rashard Mendenhall, became the first Steelers running back to top 100 yards in consecutive games in four years.

Nicknamed "the minivan" by former Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward, Dwyer ripped off a series of runs through gaping holes that kept the Redskins off-balance.

"I was just going off of how (the offensive line) was playing," Dwyer said. "They were playing physical so I brought my physicality to the game as well."

Pittsburgh wasted little time putting the pressure on, racing to a 20-6 halftime lead. Each drive seemed to follow the same pattern. Dwyer would soften up the middle of the Washington defense by bulling up the gut and Roethlisberger would spread the ball to anyone willing to catch it.

He hit little-used Leonard Pope for his first touchdown of the game and found Miller for a 7-yard score. When Roethlisberger flipped the ball to Will Johnson from a yard out midway through the third quarter to make it 27-9, the Steelers were in complete command.

Washington mustered little the rest of the way and eventually lost its composure.

Cornerback DeAngelo Hall was ejected in the fourth quarter after getting in the face of an official, and Griffin ended the day with a simple kneel down on the Redskins' last possession, eager to get out of the rain and away from the worst performance of his short career.

"We lost the game, that's all that matter," Griffin said. "You're judged by wins and losses. I feel as bad as anyone else in that locker room right now."

NOTES: Washington TE Chris Cooley, re-signed by the team last week after Fred Davis was lost for the season with a torn Achilles, played sporadically. He did not catch a pass but was targeted once by Griffin ... The Steelers improved to 400-253-2 since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the most by any NFL franchise during that span ... Pittsburgh S Ryan Clark left in the third quarter with a concussion and did not return.

Professors Make Archaeological Finds in Jordan; Epigrapher to ...

Erin Darby, an assistant professor of religious studies, and Robert Darby, a lecturer in art history and classics, have spent the past three years excavating an archaeological site in southern Jordan. What they?ve found there, Robert Darby said, is ?remarkable.?

Finds at the site include a Roman fort, bathhouse, and aqueduct system. They are probably from the late Roman or Byzantine period?roughly between the third and sixth centuries C.E.

The Darby?s excavation site in southern Jordan.

What makes the findings even more intriguing is the ancient writings found at the site.

The Darbys have been working with an epigrapher?an expert on ancient inscriptions?to learn more about the writing.

The epigrapher for the excavation?Chris Rollston, associate professor at Emmanuel Christian Seminary in Johnson City, TN?will be at UT on Tuesday, October 30, to talk about his work on a variety of archaeological projects with biblical ties. His lecture, at 7:30 p.m. in the McClung Museum Auditorium, is free and open to the public. He also will be speaking to a class at 2:10 p.m. that day in Humanities and Social Sciences Building, Room 115 on the literacy of the ancient Israelites, and anyone is invited to attend.

Robert Darby said the epigraphic remains at the Jordan site, ?Ayn Gharandal, are quite significant, because it is rare to find writing in bathhouses and small forts from the Roman Near East.

?There?s very little in terms of written evidence from these sites,? he said.

In the bathhouse, the archaeological team found numerous charcoal inscriptions and drawings decorating its walls, essentially ancient Roman graffiti. The fort, however, contained an official painted inscription, possibly a dedication to soldiers stationed at the site.

The inscription, painted in ancient Greek using bright red letters, had fallen off a wall and was in pieces. It was sent to the conservation lab at the American Center of Oriental Research in Amman to be put back together.

Erin and Robert Darby

?It?s sort of like piecing back together a puzzle,? Robert Darby said.

Several pieces of the puzzle are still missing, and the team likely won?t have a translation of what remains until December.

One piece of graffiti from the bathhouse contained an early Christian symbol known as a Chi Rho. The Chi Rho uses the first two letters of the Greek word for Christ to form a cross-like shape. The fort inscription includes a list of names that are Nabataean in origin, which tells the archaeologists that the soldiers stationed there may have been local, not sent from Rome. Some of the individuals are named after Nabataean deities. Combined with the Chi Rho symbol, this suggests that people in the area may have been transitioning from traditional to Christian beliefs.

The team has also found a number of pots, tiles, and other objects of daily life at the site. These discoveries tell them much about the lives of the people who lived there.

The site has been disturbed in the recent past by looters and also could be completely destroyed by a proposed canal between the Dead Sea and the Red Sea.

Erin and Robert Darby will be leading a UT study abroad program to ?Ayn Gharandal next summer to continue the excavation.

Mountain biking in Breckenridge, Colorado: 4 solid rides | Matador ...

All photos: Author

Monica Prelle shares her shoulder-season route picks, along with logistical info to get you started.

THERE ARE 100+ MILES of trails in Breckenridge, including both a tightly packed in-town network and sections of some of the region?s most epic trails. Riders of all abilities will be able to put together a sweet route. Here are 4 of my favorites.

1. Peaks Trail Loop

20.8 miles, difficult

Ask a local and they?ll probably point you to Peaks Trail as the quintessential singletrack in Breck. It?s a technical climb with rock gardens, bridges, almost 1,000 feet of elevation gain, and a ripping-fast descent.

Along the way you?re likely to see red-tailed hawks and stellar jays. The trail winds through tunnels of aspen trees, opening onto some sick mountain views.

  • Start in town and pedal up Ski Hill Road to the Peaks trailhead.
  • You?ll head uphill on Peaks Trail for about 3 miles before the grade mellows and you begin to traverse the mountainside.
  • The trail passes the Gold Hill / Colorado Trail junction and continues downhill to Frisco.
  • At the trail?s end, turn right on Miners Creek Road, then right again onto the paved Blue River recreation path and follow the signs back to Breck.

Alternate route: Peaks Trail / Gold Hill

13.8 miles, difficult

  • For a shorter loop, head up Ski Hill Road and take Peaks Trail to the Gold Hill / Colorado Trail junction at 4.8 miles.
  • Turn right on Gold Hill Trail and follow it to the paved Blue River recreation path to return to town.
2. Sallie Barber / Barney Ford Loop

9.2 miles, intermediate

My first afternoon in Breck, I decided to sneak in a quick ride before dark. The Sallie Barber / Barney Ford Loop was recommended, but rather than follow the directions, I pedaled straight up Carter Park Trail and later realized I was riding the loop backwards. I eventually got myself turned around and on the loop going the right way.

You?ll be traveling on surface streets and dirt roads for a few miles to start with, which makes the uphill pedaling relatively easy. Once you reach the top of Sallie Barber Road, you?ll have a lot of fun singletrack options back to Carter Park.

  • From the Carter Park parking lot, head north on High St. for five blocks.
  • When High St. dead ends, turn right onto Wellington Road.
  • Take Wellington for about a mile and then bear right at the Wellington / Reiling / French Gulch Road intersection.
  • Continue up French Gulch for 2.9 miles to the Lincoln trailhead.
  • Just past the trailhead kiosk, turn right onto Sallie Barber Road and head uphill for 1.2 miles to the Sallie Barber Mine.
  • Continue past the mine and turn right onto Barney Ford Trail. (This is where the fun downhill begins.)
  • Follow Barney Ford to Moonstone Trail, then to Carter Park Trail back to the park.
3. Carter Park / Moonstone / Barney Ford (out and back)

5 miles, intermediate

The trails out of Carter Park were so much fun I returned three times in four days. I found the dirt fast and flowy, and there are nice views of town. The network of trails in the area offers a few different loop options and out-and-back rides.

The Carter Park network is also popular among trail runners and dog walkers; these different user groups seem to happily coexist.

For a short but solid ride, head straight up from the Carter Park trailhead to the top of Barney Ford Trail. This is also a good alternative to the Sallie Barber Loop for those who prefer riding only on singletrack. The descent will be the same, but the uphill climb is much steeper and shorter.

  • Take Carter Park Trail from the trailhead at the parking lot and pedal up the steep switchbacks for .5 miles.
  • Take Moonstone Trail up for another .5 miles.
  • Next, take Barney Ford Trail for 1.5 more miles of up.
  • Return to Carter Park the same way you climbed.
Burro Trail (out and back)

6 miles, intermediate

After four days exploring Breck, I hadn?t got my fill of riding, so I set the alarm and hit the trails before sunrise on departure day. The bike valet guy at my hotel recommended Burro Trail; the trailhead was close by, so it was a good option for squeezing in one last ride.

This out-and-back is a mix of double and singletrack and is a good one if you?re short on time or want to grab a few extra miles after a day of riding. The trail follows a creek most of the way up and has a few rock gardens for more challenging terrain. Most people take it for about 3 miles before turning around, but there are options to continue on a more technical trail.

  • Start at the base of Peak 9 and head up the dirt road for about 100 yards. The trailhead is marked with a forest service sign and is easy to spot.
  • The trail winds uphill and eventually crosses a 4WD road at about 3 miles.
  • Turn around and descend the same way, or continue up for a longer and more technical ride.
Downhill option

Peak 8 Fun Park has more than 20 miles of downhill singletrack accessible by chairlift. The park was already closed for the season when I visited in late September, but the crew was working hard on trail building and maintenance and is excited to showcase some new trails next summer.

Bike park lift tickets cost $15 for one lift or $30 for unlimited rides.

Rentals

Bike rentals at Alpine Sports ? one of several shops in town ? start at $25 for a half day on a Specialized hardtail, $35 for a full day; $45 gets you a half day on a Specialized full suspension, $55 for a full day.

The shop has four locations in Breckenridge and also rents road bikes, cruisers, tandems, kids? bikes, and child trailers.

Trail map

Download a free trail map before you visit, or purchase the Breckenridge & Summit County Hiking and Biking Trail Map at any area bike shop.

Trail etiquette

There are ?mud-o-meter? signs posted at most trailheads; use good judgment and stay off muddy or closed trails.

[Editor's note: Monica was a guest of GoBreck on this trip.]

Annual to decadal changes in the earth's magnetic field in a region that stretches from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean have a close relationship with variations of gravity in this area. From this it can be concluded that outer core processes are reflected in gravity data. This is the result presented by a German-French group of geophysicists in the latest issue of PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States).

The main field of the Earth's magnetic field is generated by flows of liquid iron in the outer core. The Earth's magnetic field protects us from cosmic radiation particles. Therefore, understanding the processes in the outer core is important to understand the terrestrial shield. Key to this are measurements of the geomagnetic field itself. A second, independent access could be represented by the measurement of minute changes in gravity caused by the fact that the flow in the liquid Earth's core is associated with mass displacements. The research group has now succeeded to provide the first evidence of such a connection of fluctuations in the Earth's gravity and magnetic field.

They used magnetic field measurements of the GFZ-satellite CHAMP and extremely accurate measurements of the Earth's gravity field derived from the GRACE mission, which is also under the auspices of the GFZ. "The main problem was the separation of the individual components of the gravity data from the total signal," explains Vincent Lesur from the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, who is involved in the study. A satellite only measures the total gravity, which consists of the mass fractions of Earth's body, water and ice on the ground and in the air. To determine the mass redistribution by flows in the outer core, the thus attained share of the total gravity needs to be filtered out. "Similarly, in order to capture the smaller changes in the outer core, the proportion of the magnetic crust and the proportion of the ionosphere and magnetosphere need to be filtered out from the total magnetic field signal measured by the satellite," Vincent Lesur explains. The data records of the GFZ-satellite missions CHAMP and GRACE enabled this for the first time.

During the investigation, the team focused on an area between the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean, as the determined currents flows were the highest here. Extremely fast changes (so-called magnetic jerks) were observed in the year 2007 at the Earth's surface. These are an indication for sudden changes of liquid flows in the upper outer core and are important for understanding the magneto-hydrodynamics in the Earth's core. Using the satellite data, a clear signal of gravity data from the Earth's core could be received for the first time.

This results in consequences for the existing conceptual models. Until now, for example, it was assumed that the differences in the density of the molten iron in the earth's core are not large enough to generate a measurable signal in the earth's gravitational field. The newly determined mass flows in the upper outer core allow a new approach to Earth's core hydrodynamics.

Mass shooting in Wisconsin, suspect at large, police say

A tactical unit responds to the shooting in Brookfield, Wis. (AP)

A shooting at a spa near a Brookfield, Wis., mall on Sunday left three dead and four others wounded, police said, and authorities are searching for the suspected gunman.

Police identified the suspected shooter as 45-year-old Radcliffe Haughton, of Brown Deer, Wis. Haughton is 6-foot-2-inches tall, weighs approximately 210 pounds and was last seen wearing a camouflage jacket, grey sweater, blue jeans and carrying a white and black backpack, police said. He was reportedly driving a black 2003 Mazda Prot?g? with license plate no. 171-KZD, though according to witnesses he may have fled on foot.

The shooting occurred at the Azana Salon & Spa across the street from the Brookfield Square Mall at approximately 11:15 a.m. local time, police said.

"Our entire operation is focused on locating the suspect," Brookfield Police Chief Daniel Tushaus said at a press conference on Sunday.

Authorities have not released a motive. But according to WISN-TV, Haughton is the estranged husband of one of the spa workers.

Haughton (Waukesha County Sheriff's Dept.)

A spokeswoman for Froedtert Memorial Hospital told the Associated Press that said four shooting victims were being treated for non-life threatening injuries at the hospital.

According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the mall has been placed on lockdown, as has a nearby country club.

SWAT, fire and rescue officials responded to the scene, and a Flight for Life helicopter landed in the mall's parking lot. Police and tactical units were conducting a sweep of surrounding buildings, and a bomb squad was also called in.

In August, Wade Michael Page, an Army veteran with white supremacist ties, opened fire at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wis., killing six and injuring three others before shooting himself.

And Sunday's shooting took place less than a mile from a hotel where a gunman opened fire during a Living Church of God service in 2005. Seven people were killed and four wounded in that shooting.

Winner Announced in Business Plan Competition to Boost ...

Ernest M. Higa of Higa Industries Co. Ltd. presents Dr. Kazuo Matsuura of NanoMist Technologies with the first-place prize at the 2012 U.S.-Japan Council Annual Conference on Oct. 5.

SEATTLE ? The winner of the TOMODACHI Tohoku Challenge (TTC), a business plan focused on identifying a venture business that will bring innovation and employment to the post-quake Tohoku region of Japan and accelerate the rebuilding of the area, was revealed at the 2012 U.S.-Japan Council Annual Conference in Seattle.

During a luncheon session on U.S.-Japan business and innovation, NanoMist Technologies was awarded the top prize in front of an audience of more than 350 people invested in the future of U.S.-Japan relations. The NanoMist Technologies team was led by Dr. Kazuo Matsuura, who put forth a plan for the commercialization of a game-changing desalination technology.

NanoMist Technologies is the owner of a patented process to separate solutions by a method called atomization separation (AS). Compared to conventional methods of distillation and reverse osmosis, AS is more energy-efficient and offers other competitive advantages.

Current applications include waste water treatment at hospitals, but the company seeks to expand its business to provide fresh water for food and agricultural processes and other commercial applications. Kessennuma will be the first test market, and the founder is currently also reaching out to businesses in the Middle East.

The top three finalists presented at an earlier session in front of a panel of judges made up of the U.S.-Japan Council Entrepreneur Advisory Board (UE-LAB), an exclusive group of leading Japanese and American entrepreneurs, investors and analysts with extensive experience in innovation, business start-ups and knowledge of Japan, who are active in promoting entrepreneurship in Japan.

The NanoMist Technologies team receives a mentorship package from Global Venture Habitat, supported by the SunBridge Foundation. With facilities in Silicon Valley, Tokyo, and Osaka, this program supports startup companies and international market entry teams with a range of professional services from office space to globalization support.

NanoMist Technologies will benefit from access to professional services, a network of professionals, potential venture capital and a variety of assistance and consultation in maximizing their global market potential.

YOAKE Rice Burger was awarded second prize at the conference for its plan to franchise a ?smile-of-yum? that builds awareness about Tohoku in the U.S. through rice burger restaurants. They receive a mentorship package from Venture Generation, a venture community in Tokyo that supports entrepreneurs in Japan by offering a platform for companies to achieve their growth goals much faster than they would independently.

UE-LAB member Ernest M. Higa, president and CEO of Higa Industries Co. Ltd. and Wendy?s Japan LLC, has offered consultation to this team. He is credited with bringing the concept of delivery pizza to Japan along with other entrepreneurial and culturally creative food ventures.

Both the NanoMist Technologies and YOAKE teams have been invited to the awards ceremony at U.S. Ambassador John V. Roos? residence during the Global Entrepreneurship Week in Tokyo in November.

The TOMODACHI Tohoku Challenge was coordinated by the U.S.-Japan Council Entrepreneurship Task Force, led by council members Kathryn Ibata-Arens and Yumi Kuwana; mentor leads and emerging leaders Kei Ashizawa and Dana Heatherton; and U.S.-Japan Council staff.

Breakthrough offers new route to large-scale quantum computing

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2012) ? In a key step toward creating a working quantum computer, Princeton researchers have developed a method that may allow the quick and reliable transfer of quantum information throughout a computing device

The finding, by a team led by Princeton physicist Jason Petta, could eventually allow engineers to build quantum computers consisting of millions of quantum bits, or qubits. So far, quantum researchers have only been able to manipulate small numbers of qubits, not enough for a practical machine.

"The whole game at this point in quantum computing is trying to build a larger system," said Andrew Houck, an assistant professor of electrical engineering who is part of the research team.

To make the transfer, Petta's team used a stream of microwave photons to analyze a pair of electrons trapped in a tiny cage called a quantum dot. The "spin state" of the electrons -- information about how they are spinning -- serves as the qubit, a basic unit of information. The microwave stream allows the scientists to read that information.

"We create a cavity with mirrors on both ends -- but they don't reflect visible light, they reflect microwave radiation," Petta said. "Then we send microwaves in one end, and we look at the microwaves as they come out the other end. The microwaves are affected by the spin states of the electrons in the cavity, and we can read that change."

In an ordinary sense, the distances involved are very small; the entire apparatus operates over a little more than a centimeter. But on the subatomic scale, they are vast. It is like coordinating the motion of a top spinning on the moon with another on the surface of Earth.

"It's the most amazing thing," said Jake Taylor, a physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Joint Quantum Institute at the University of Maryland, who worked on the project with the Princeton team. "You have a single electron almost completely changing the properties of an inch-long electrical system."

For years, teams of scientists have pursued the idea of using quantum mechanics to build a new machine that would revolutionize computing. The goal is not build a faster or more powerful computer, but to build one that approaches problems in a completely different fashion.

Standard computers store information as classical "bits," which can take on a value of either 0 or 1. These bits allow programmers to create the complex instructions that are the basis for modern computing power. Since Alan Turing took the first steps toward creating a computer at Princeton in 1936, engineers have created vastly more powerful and complex machines, but this basic binary system has remained unchanged.

The power of a quantum computer comes from the strange rules of quantum mechanics, which describe the universe of subatomic particles. Quantum mechanics says that an electron can spin in one direction, representing a 1, or in another direction, a 0. But it can also be in something called "superposition" representing all states between 1 and 0. If scientists and engineers can build a working machine that takes advantage of this, they would open up entirely new fields of computing.

"The point of a quantum computer is not that they can do what a normal computer can do but faster; that's not what they are," said Houck. "The quantum computer would allow us to approach problems differently. It would allow us to solve problems that cannot be solved with a normal computer."

Mathematicians are still working on possible uses for a quantum system, but the machines could allow them to accomplish tasks such as factoring currently unfactorable numbers, breaking codes or predicting the behavior of molecules.

One challenge facing scientists is that the spins of electrons, or any other quantum particles, are incredibly delicate. Any outside influences, whether a wisp of magnetism or glimpse of light, destabilizes the electrons' spins and introduces errors.

Over the years, scientists have developed techniques to observe spin states without disturbing them. (This year's Nobel Prize in physics honored two scientists who first demonstrated the direct observation of quantum particles.) But analyzing small numbers of spins is not enough; millions will be required to make a real quantum processor.

To approach the problem, Petta's team combined techniques from two branches of science: from materials science, they used a structure called a quantum dot to hold and analyze electrons' spins; and from optics, they adopted a microwave channel to transfer the spin information from the dot.

To make the quantum dots, the team isolated a pair of electrons on a small section of material called a "semiconductor nanowire." Basically, that means a wire that is so thin that it can hold electrons like soda bubbles in a straw. They then created small "cages" along the wire. The cages are set up so that electrons will settle into a particular cage depending on their energy level.

This is how the team reads the spin state: electrons of similar spin will repel, while those of different spins will attract. So the team manipulates the electrons to a certain energy level and then reads their position. If they are in the same cage, they are spinning differently; if they are in different cages, the spins are the same.

The second step is to place this quantum dot inside the microwave channel. This allows the team to transfer the information about the pair's spin state -- the qubit.

Petta said the next step is to increase the reliability of the setup for a single electron pair. After that, the team plans to add more quantum dots to create more qubits. Team members are cautiously optimistic. There appear to be no insurmountable problems at this point but, as with any system, increasing complexity could lead to unforeseen difficulties.

"The methods we are using here are scalable, and we would like to use them in a larger system," Petta said. "But to make use of the scaling, it needs to work a little better. The first step is to make better mirrors for the microwave cavity."

Tennessee clinic linked to meningitis scare closed after outbreak

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Reuters) - The Tennessee clinic that received more potentially tainted steroid than any facility in the nation has been closed temporarily as it struggles to cope with an avalanche of patient calls about the deadly meningitis outbreak, its administrator said.

The Saint Thomas Outpatient Neurosurgery Center in Nashville received 2,000 vials of the steroid from a Massachusetts company. The drug was shipped to 76 facilities in 23 states.

Twenty people have died, including three at the hospital where the clinic is located, and 254 contracted fungal meningitis traced to vials from New England Compounding Center used mainly for epidural injections to ease back pain.

Tennessee has more confirmed cases than any other state. The Nashville clinic was one of the first to notice its patients were suffering from severe headaches and other symptoms.

The clinic, which administered about 5,000 epidural injections a year for back pain, closed on September 20 and has not reopened.

"We started out with 300 phone calls a day and now we are getting 40 or 50. As long as these phone calls are coming in, we are not comfortable to be open," Scott Butler, administrator of the clinic, said in an interview on Wednesday.

"I would never want somebody who called in, in pain, to be told ?We're working here. We'll call you back,'" Butler said.

It is still not clear how much of the clinic's medication was tainted with a fungus.

The Tennessee Department of Health said 477 of the 2,520 vials shipped to three facilities in the state, including Saint Thomas clinic, were not used. This suggests that all but about 20 percent of the supply was administered to patients.

Butler said he could not comment on the clinic's relationship with NECC. The Massachusetts pharmacy compounder faces multiple investigations including whether it broke state and federal laws by shipping medications in bulk.

The outbreak has been stressful for patients and the clinic's 15 employees.

"It has been one of the most emotionally taxing things on these employees over there, simply because every patient they are talking to is scared and in pain. It has been very tough," Butler said.

It has hurt the business of the clinic, which continues to pay its employees while as the facility remains closed.

It has also hurt the business of the clinic, which has continued to pay its employees full-time even as the facility remains closed and has received unwanted publicity.

The clinic is on the ninth floor of a building adjacent to Saint Thomas Hospital, which has sought to distance itself from the clinic since the outbreak, even though the two share some common ownership and part of the same name.

"The only center that received the tainted steroids was the ninth-floor Outpatient Neurosurgery Center, which is separate from the hospital or any other outpatient center on the Saint Thomas campus," Saint Thomas Hospital Dr. Robert Latham said last Friday in a briefing hosted by the Tennessee Health Department.

Saint Thomas Network, which owns Saint Thomas Hospital and other hospitals in Tennessee, also is a part owner of the clinic through a joint venture with Howell Allen Clinic.

The Tennessee Health Department said the clinic has been helpful in its efforts to investigate the outbreak and is free to reopen. But Butler said that will not happen soon.

"Obviously it's hurting business. Our concern right now is taking care of the patients. As we get down the road, we'll worry about the business," Butler said.

JVC intros 55inch BlackSapphire LCD TV with 45W virtual surround sound, SlingPlayer

Every TV maker trying to avoid total commoditization has a special trick to keep its designs unique and worth a higher price. For JVC, that trick is sound. It's launching the BlackSapphire line of LCD-based 3D TVs with the 55-inch, edge LED-lit JLE55SP4400, whose signature is an unusually powerful built-in audio system: the 45W system and 3D processing supposedly produces surround sound without having to line the living room with extra speakers. Odds are that the set won't provide much competition for dedicated speakers, although JVC is promising more integration beyond this with rare built-in SlingPlayer TV streaming, just in case there's a Slingbox in another part of the home. The all-in strategy could make the inaugural BlackSapphire more of a bargain than it looks: that $1,300 you'll pay when the screen ships this month might be all you need to start watching.
