Wastewater recycling can multiply greenhouse gas emissions

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2011) ? Despite evidence that some wastewater treatments multiply nitrous oxide emissions, researchers say planners need to look at the big picture.

New research shows that wastewater recycling processes may generate more greenhouse gases than traditional water-treatment processes. Despite this finding, there are good reasons to continue keep wastewater recycling among the water-resource tools for urban areas.

That's the summary of a new paper by Amy Townsend-Small, assistant professor of geology and geography at the University of Cincinnati, and a team of researchers from the University of California, Irvine. A report of their research appears in the September-October issue of the Journal of Environmental Quality.

"Advanced methods in wastewater treatment supplement fresh water supplies in areas where fresh water is scarce," Townsend-Small said. "Climate change, caused at least in part by humanmade greenhouse gas emissions, is expected to exacerbate freshwater scarcity in many of these areas, including the United States southwest."

Townsend-Small, along with Diane E. Pataki, Linda Y. Tseng, Cheng-Yao Tsai and Diego Rosso, studied how different types of wastewater treatment affect emissions of one greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a long-lived and potent greenhouse gas, with a warming potential of about 300 times that of carbon dioxide.

"Just like carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide concentrations are increasing due to human activities," Townsend-Small said. "Most of the increase in atmospheric nitrous oxide concentrations is due to the use of fertilizer in agriculture."

Nitrous oxide is a by-product of the metabolism of two different types of bacteria. One bacterial type, the nitrifying bacteria, convert forms of reduced nitrogen (like ammonium) to oxidized forms of nitrogen (like nitrates). Another type of bacteria, the denitrifying microbes, convert nitrates into inert nitrogen gas.

"The same microbes that live in agricultural soils also thrive in wastewater treatment and water recycling plants," Townsend-Small said. "The same nitrification and denitrification processes are employed in these plants to remove nitrogen from wastewater."

Townsend-Small and her colleagues compared the nitrous oxide emission rates at two different types of wastewater treatment plants in southern California. The first type was a conventional wastewater treatment plant, where the objective is to remove organic carbon and return the treated wastewater to a river or the ocean. The second type was a wastewater recycling plant, where both organic carbon and nitrogen are removed, and the treated wastewater is used for irrigation of landscaping and urban greenspace.

"Wastewater reuse for irrigation, otherwise known as 'showers to flowers', potentially reduces overall freshwater consumption in southern California, which is threatened by dwindling supply and a growing population," Townsend-Small said.

However, she and her co-authors found that the wastewater recycling plant emitted about three times more nitrous oxide than the traditional treatment, when all factors are included. The researchers' data indicate that dense populations of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria in the wastewater recycling plant were the cause of these high nitrous oxide emissions. They also did preliminary calculations on the impact of wastewater recycling plants on nitrous oxide emissions in southern California.

"Because the Los Angeles area is so heavily urbanized, our calculations indicate that nitrous oxide emissions from wastewater treatment and recycling are several orders of magnitude larger than agricultural nitrous oxide emissions in the region," Townsend-Small said.

Despite the production of nitrous oxide, the authors conclude that -- taken in context -- wastewater recycling is still a good idea.

"Wastewater recycling is an essential component of the urban water-resource portfolio, especially in the semi-arid, urban southwest," Townsend-Small said. "Because drinking water in southern California is imported over very long distances, it is responsible for large energy consumption and carbon-dioxide emission rates."

Southern California's thirst also affects the areas from which it draws its drinking water, mostly Arizona and northern California, and disrupts aquatic habitats. The authors propose that cities allow recycled wastewater to supplement drinking water supplies, not just irrigation water.

"If wastewater recycling can supplement drinking water resources and not just irrigation water for landscaping, then overall greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced, as could the potential for water scarcity in southern California and beyond." Townsend-Small said.

The research was supported by funding from the National Research Initiative of the US Department of Agriculture and the Urban Water Research Center at the University of California, Irvine.

Armstrong 911 caller: My friend hanged himself

These calls are never easy to listen, and this is no exception.

The Los Angeles Fire Department today released audio from the 911 call placed by a friend of "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills'" star Russell Armstrong, after finding his suicidal friend's limp body hanging in a guest house.

Though Russell's estranged wife Taylor Armstrong did not personally make the call, she is heard sobbing and exclaiming in the background of the nearly 7-minute exchange, for which her daughter was also present.

His exchange with the emergency personnel was peppered with asides he made to Taylor, standing and clearly heard sobbing nearby, in attempts to comfort her.

"Come here, Taylor. Come here, Taylor. It's all right. It's all right. There's nothing we can do."

The friend informed operators that they did not cut down Russell's body, whose death certificate also released this week revealed hung himself with an electrical cord, but told the operator that "there's nothing we can do. Please come as soon as possible."

"We just found...he has not been responding to anybody for the last few days and we just came up to the house and we finally went in...and that's it...Oh my God, oh my God. Oh my God, oh my God."

In the background of the call, Taylor is heard first exclaiming, "It's not all right," then, soon after, "I need my psychiatrist."

Taylor's 5-year-old daughter with Russell, Kennedy, was also present when they found the body, though per the exchange, did not ever see the body and was not aware of what had happened.

"Taylor, have her go away as soon as possible," the friend said. "She's fine, she's fine, she doesn't know...You know what Taylor, have your daughter go away please."

As for how they found their friend, the caller explained, "He's basically in the back. He locked his door, the friend went over through the back window and saw him hanging there. And we don't know how long it's been because the last time we all saw him was Friday."

In their report last week, the coroner confirmed that Russell had been dead for more than a day before he was found.

Irene damages some beaches, spares others along coast (Reuters)

MANAHAWKIN, New Jersey (Reuters) ? Beaches along the Atlantic coast took a beating on Sunday from Hurricane Irene, which caused heavy damage to some popular seaside tourist towns yet spared others the worst of its powerful wind and waves.

In New Jersey, on the historic boardwalk in Asbury Park, heavy concrete benches were upended and the wooden walkway was heaped with sand, residents said.

The sandy beach was washed away. with hard-packed flat dirt and debris left behind, said Geoff Merritt, who owns a house two blocks from the boardwalk.

"The beach is gone," he said. "It was a nice beach, and it's just gone."

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie said at a media briefing that beach water quality monitoring would resume on Monday in preparation for reopening popular tourist spots.

"We can get our beaches open as quickly as it's safe for people to be back in the water," he said.

In Manahawkin, cars were lined up at the causeway leading to Long Beach Island, as people waited for permission to get back onto the barrier island resort and survey the damage.

Evacuation orders for the area, issued on Friday, remained in effect.

"Long Beach Island emergency services are working to check infrastructure, gas and electricity before allowing anyone back on," said Police Lieutenant Thomas Dellane of the nearby town of Stafford, New Jersey.

Christie said he would lift the evacuation orders as soon as it was deemed safe.

"Once it's safe, believe me, I'll be out there a lot, talking about how people should come to the Jersey shore for Labor Day weekend," Christie said in an interview on CNN.

"We'll certainly be shouting it from the rooftops. We're hoping people will come celebrate the end of summer at the Jersey shore," he said.

Also ready for the return of tourists was Atlantic City, which fared the storm well, said Danielle Battistone, general manager of the local Tun Tavern and Brewery.

"No trees are down or power lines, as far as I can see," she said. "It's strange. It's completely dry."

At Delaware's Dewey Beach, the dunes had been built up artificially and planted with long grasses to limit storm damage. They appeared badly eroded but not significantly damaged after the storm.

"I'm pretty happy with what I see," said Tom Mullen, 61, of Seaford, Delaware, as he surveyed the scene.

Further south, North Carolina beaches suffered damage, said First Sergeant Jeff Gordon with the State Highway Patrol. He said some piers broke off and there was likely to be structural damage and erosion along the Atlantic coastline.

"It is just a question of how much and to what extent, and we won't know that until the damage assessor's report," he said.

A spokeswoman for the North Carolina Emergency Management response team said assessors had yet to reach some areas.

South Carolina fared reasonably well, said Derrec Becker of the state Emergency Management Division.

"We are very lucky," he said, saying no boardwalks were down and there was very little erosion.

Japan gets another prime minister: Can he stop the revolving door leadership? (VIDEO) (The Christian Science Monitor)

Tokyo ? Yoshihiko Noda is slated to become Japan?s sixth prime minister in five years after the resignation of the unpopular Naoto Kan on Friday. But Mr. Noda's emphasis on collaboration is offering some hope that he will be able to slow his country's revolving-door leadership, despite a host of daunting challenges at home and abroad.

The former finance minister in the government of Mr. Kan, who resigned after just 450 days in office, confronts major tests in the aftermath of March?s triple disasters, a deeply divided party, and a strong currency that is making exports even more expensive in a stuttering global economy. He also faces potentially strained relations with Japan?s closest neighbors and an unforgiving electorate and media at home.

Still, some observers are cautiously optimistic.

?He seems to treasure harmony, unlike Kan and Hatoyama [Kan?s predecessor], so he may last a little longer if he looks for cooperation with the opposition parties,? says Takashi Koyama, professor of politics at Akita International University.

Think you know Asia? Take our geography quiz.

Noda defeated trade and industry minister Banri Kaieda in a second round run-off by 215 votes to 177 in a ballot of Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) lawmakers and is expected to be sworn in on Tuesday. Five candidates ran in the first round though nobody achieved an overall majority. Seiji Maehara, by far the most popular of the five with the public, was eliminated in the first round.

Economy policiesKnown as a fiscal conservative in the left-leaning DPJ, Noda had stated an intention to increase taxes to help control Japan?s huge and growing national debt. However, he has recently been backpedaling away from that stance as Japan?s economy has registered its third straight quarter of contraction.

?He doesn?t have much room for maneuver with policies for the economy, even less than the other candidates would have done because of his statements about raising tax,? says Martin Schulz, senior economist at the Fujitsu Research Institute in Tokyo.

However, Dr. Schulz believes any tax rises will be ?on the back burner for the next couple of years until reconstruction from the disaster is complete and the economy recovers.?

newslook

As finance minister, Noda was vocal in proposing government intervention to weaken the strong yen which has hurt Japan?s exporters when weak domestic demand means that overseas markets offer the only hope of growth. Nevertheless, with foreign exchange markets having grown exponentially in recent years, even the $50 billion spent by the government post-disaster has provided only temporary relief.

???All the intervention does is buy a few days of weak yen for exporters to cash in, and then it carries on back on the same trend of strengthening,??

With Japan?s national debt already at around 200 percent of GDP ? the highest ratio of any country except Zimbabwe ? there will also be pressure on Noda to tackle that $10 trillion problem.

Finding harmony Before he can attempt any policy initiatives, the new prime minister must try to unify a DPJ so wrought with internal divisions that five candidates representing its various factions stood in today?s leadership election.

The appointment of cabinet positions will then be as much about placating those competing groups as it will be about finding the most capable ministers for the respective posts.

As the revolving door of premiers continues to turn, many are wondering whether anybody can be a successful Japanese prime minister, even as the country seems to be crying out for strong leadership. While Noda?s nonconfrontational style may help him to some extent in Japan?s consensus-driven politics, few expect him to be inspirational.

?He is calm and a compromiser who doesn?t get into fights with other politicians for emotional reasons,? says Professor Koyama.

Noda is also likely to need some of those skills to smooth relations with China and South Korea, who he recently angered with his statement earlier this month that convicted Japanese Class-A war criminals were not in fact guilty of war crimes. Japanese wartime aggression and its perceived failure to acknowledge its actions remains a thorny issue with its Asian neighbors 66 years after the end of World War II.

?If he doesn?t manage to resolve this issue with China and Korea, then Japan could once again become more isolated in Asia,? says Professor Koyama.

Whatever Noda brings to the table, it simply may not be enough to satisfy Japan?s fickle electorate. A poll before Kan announced his resignation showed that a majority of voters didn?t believe the next prime minister would last more than a year, whoever it turned out to be.

Think you know Asia? Take our geography quiz.

(AP) ? Still menacing Hurricane Irene knocked out power and piers in North Carolina, clobbered Virginia with wind and churned up the coast Saturday to confront cities more accustomed to snowstorms than tropical storms. New York City emptied its streets and subways and waited with an eerie quiet.

With most of its transportation machinery shut down, the Eastern Seaboard spent the day nervously watching the storm's march across a swath of the nation inhabited by 65 million people. The hurricane had an enormous wingspan ? 500 miles, its outer reaches stretching from the Carolinas to Cape Cod ? and packed wind gusts of 115 mph.

At least 1.5 million homes and businesses were without power. While it was too early to assess the full threat, Irene was blamed for six deaths.

The hurricane stirred up 7-foot waves, and forecasters warned of storm-surge danger on the coasts of Virginia and Delaware, along the Jersey Shore and in New York Harbor and Long Island Sound. In the Northeast, drenched by rain this summer, the ground is already saturated, raising the risk of flooding.

Irene made its official landfall just after first light near Cape Lookout, N.C., at the southern end of the Outer Banks, the ribbon of land that bows out into the Atlantic Ocean. Shorefront hotels and houses were lashed with waves. Two piers were destroyed, and at least one hospital was forced to run on generator power.

"Things are banging against the house," Leon Reasor said as he rode out the storm in the town of Buxton. "I hope it doesn't get worse, but I know it will. I just hate hurricanes."

By late evening, the storm had sustained winds of 80 mph, down from 100 mph on Friday. That made it a Category 1, the least threatening on a 1-to-5 scale, and barely stronger than a tropical storm. Its center passed North Carolina and was moving along the coast of Virginia. It also was picking up speed, moving at 16 mph.

After the Outer Banks, the storm strafed Virginia with rain and strong wind. Hurricane force winds covered the Hampton Roads region, which is thick with inlets and rivers and floods easily, and chugged north toward Chesapeake Bay.

Maryland transportation officials closed the Chesapeake Bay bridge when wind gusts reached 82 mph. The bridge connects the capital of Annapolis and the rest of Maryland to the Eastern Shore. A tornado touched down in Sussex County in Delaware, damaging at least 15 homes.

Shaped like a massive inverted comma, the storm had a thick northern flank that covered all of Delaware, almost all of Maryland and the eastern half of Virginia.

The deaths included two children, an 11-year-old boy in Virginia killed when a tree crashed through his roof and a North Carolina child who died in a crash at an intersection where traffic lights were out.

In addition, a North Carolina man was killed by a flying tree limb, a passenger died when a tree fell on in a car in Virginia, and a surfer in Florida was killed in heavy waves.

It was the first hurricane to make landfall in the continental United States since 2008, and came almost six years to the day after Katrina ravaged New Orleans. Experts guessed that no other hurricane in American history had threatened as many people.

At least 2.3 million were under orders to move to somewhere safer, although it was unclear how many obeyed or, in some cases, how they could.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told 6,500 troops from all branches of the military to get ready to pitch in on relief work, and President Barack Obama visited the Federal Emergency Management Agency's command center in Washington and offered moral support.

"It's going to be a long 72 hours," he said, "and obviously a lot of families are going to be affected."

In New York, authorities began the herculean job of bringing the city to a halt. The subway began shutting down at noon, the first time the system was closed because of a natural disaster. It was expected to take as long as eight hours for all the trains to complete their runs and be taken out of service.

On Wall Street, sandbags were placed around subway grates near the East River because of fear of flooding. Tarps were placed over other grates. Construction stopped throughout the city, and workers at the site of the World Trade Center dismantled a crane and secured equipment.

While there were plenty of cabs on the street, the city was far quieter than on an average Saturday. In some of the busiest parts of Manhattan, it was possible to cross a major avenue without looking, and the waters of New York Harbor, which might normally be churning from boat traffic, were quiet before the storm.

The biggest utility, Consolidated Edison, considered cutting off power to 6,500 customers in lower Manhattan because it would make the eventual repairs easier. Mayor Michael Bloomberg also warned New Yorkers that elevators in public housing would be shut down, and elevators in some high-rises would quit working so people don't get trapped if the power goes out.

"The time to leave is right now," Bloomberg said at an outdoor news conference at Coney Island, his shirt soaked from rain.

A day earlier, the city ordered evacuations for low-lying areas, including Battery Park City at the southern edge of Manhattan, Coney Island with its famous amusement park and the beachfront Rockaways in Queens.

The five main New York-area airports ? La Guardia, John F. Kennedy and Newark, plus two smaller ones ? waved in their last arriving flights around noon. The Giants and Jets postponed their preseason NFL game, the Mets postponed two baseball games, and Broadway theaters were dark.

New York has seen only a handful of hurricanes in the past 200 years. The Northeast is much more used to snowstorms ? including the blizzard last December, when Bloomberg was criticized for a slow response.

For all the concern, there were early signs that the storm might not be as bad as feared. Some forecasts had it making landfall as a Category 3 storm and perhaps reaching New York as a Category 2.

"Isabel got 10 inches from coming in the house, and this one ain't no Isabel," said Chuck Owen of Poquoson, Va., who has never abandoned his house to heed an evacuation order. He was referring to Hurricane Isabel, which chugged through in 2003.

Still, Owen put his pickup truck on a small pyramid of cinder blocks to protect it from the storm tide, which had already begun surging through the saltwater marshes that stand between Poquoson and Chesapeake Bay.

Airlines said 9,000 flights were canceled, including 3,000 on Saturday. Airlines declined to say how many passengers would be affected, but it could easily be millions because so many flights make connections on the East Coast. There were more than 10,000 cancellations during the blizzard last winter.

American Airlines spokeswoman Andrea Huguely said it was not clear when flights would resume out of New York.

"The one thing about a hurricane is that you can prepare for it and you just have to adapt your plan based on how the storm travels," she said. "It's basically an educated guessing game."

Greyhound suspended bus service between Richmond, Va., and Boston. Amtrak canceled trains in the Northeast for Sunday.

The power losses covered at least 1.5 million homes and businesses and were heavily concentrated in Virginia and North Carolina. Dominion Resources reported almost 800,000 customers without power in Virginia. In North Carolina, about 600,000 customers had no power with many of the outages in Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach, N.C. Nearly 55,000 homes and businesses in New Jersey are without power.

Irene roared across the Caribbean earlier this week, offering a devastating preview for the United States: power outages, dangerous floods and high winds that caused millions of dollars in damage.

Addiction? Video games crowded out man's real life (AP)

SARASOTA, Fla. ? At the height of what he calls his addiction, Ryan Van Cleave would stand in the grocery store checkout line with his milk and bread and baby food for his little girls and for a split second think he was living inside a video game.

It sounds crazy, but it's true: Something would catch his attention out of the corner of his eye ? maybe another shopper would make a sudden move for a Hershey bar ? and he was mentally and emotionally transported to another world.

World of Warcraft, to be exact.

It was his favorite video game, the one he played every night, every day, sometimes all weekend. The sudden movement in the store triggered a response similar to when he was in front of the computer screen, battling dragons and monsters for up to 60 hours a week. Van Cleave's heart pounded. His breathing quickened.

But then the thirtysomething family man would catch his breath and come back to reality. Sort of.

World of Warcraft began to crowd out everything in Van Cleave's world. His wife. His children. His job as a university English professor.

Before teaching class or late at night while his family slept, he'd squeeze in time at the computer screen, playing. He'd often eat meals at the computer ? microwave burritos, energy drinks, Hot Pockets, foods that required only one hand, leaving the other free to work the keyboard and the mouse.

But possibly the most insidious part of his addiction came in the hours when he wasn't gaming. During those times ? in class, out with his kids, drinking beers with friends ? he thought about the game. Which weapons he should upgrade, which "quests" or challenges to take on, whether to join a "guild," a team of players who conquer territories, gain points and status.

Gaming and thinking about gaming was all-consuming. Yet living inside World of Warcraft seemed preferable to the drudgery of everyday life. Especially when the life involved fighting with his wife about how much time he spent on the computer.

"Playing `World of Warcraft' makes me feel godlike," Van Cleave wrote. "I have ultimate control and can do what I want with few real repercussions. The real world makes me feel impotent ... a computer malfunction, a sobbing child, a suddenly dead cell phone battery ? the littlest hitch in daily living feels profoundly disempowering."

Despite thoughts like this, despite the dissociative episodes in supermarkets, he did not think he had a problem IRL ? gamerspeak for In Real Life. But he did, and a reckoning was coming.

___

Van Cleave grew up in suburban Chicago. He was adopted, which he said always made him feel like an outsider in his own home and in the world. As a kid, he was more interested in guitars and computers.

When a female teacher invited him to her house to look at a crude computer game called "Range Wars" on her Commodore computer, he jumped at the chance. He used this event from his middle school years in the 1980s as the opening scene of a book he would write about his life with video games.

He describes the game as "intoxicating," then moves on to a description of the teacher touching him, leading to sexual encounters with her on three occasions. At 11, he felt as though his insides were shriveling and "crawling with maggots."

Were these complicated first sexual experiences and first gaming experiences forever linked in his mind, thus predisposing him to gaming? Van Cleave doubts it.

"I would have played video games, regardless," he said.

In high school, each year brought more exciting games with better graphics, but his parents didn't see a problem because all teen boys seemed to play video games. And their son also played guitar in a band, so video games weren't the only thing in his life.

Same with college. "Gaming 15-20 hours a week in college is no big deal," said Van Cleave, who graduated from Northern Illinois University with a degree in English. "The problem occurred after that, when I got into the real world."

Although Van Cleave played games throughout his first job and after he married, he didn't notice that they were starting to occupy more of his time. He was seemingly on an upward career path, publishing poems and selling a young adult novel.

He earned a master's degree and a PhD in creative writing at the Florida State, was named a poetry fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and found a teaching job at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Then in the fall of 2003, he was offered a tenure-track position at Clemson University in South Carolina ? his dream job.

His wife, Victoria, became pregnant for the first time; the baby was unplanned and Van Cleave admitted to being shocked at the idea of becoming a father. He and his wife were late for her first ultrasound because Van Cleave was playing Madden Football, a sports game.

It was around this time that World of Warcraft entered his life. He had heard about how popular WoW was online ? especially in Asia ? and bought hundreds of copies to mark up and resell on Amazon to overseas buyers.

"I wondered, `Why is everyone playing this game?' " Van Cleave said. One weekend, when his parents were scheduled for a visit with their new granddaughter, Van Cleave decided to install WoW on his computer ? "just test it," he said.

Van Cleave ended up playing the entire weekend, stealing away to the computer while his family was sleeping or while his parents played with his baby daughter.

Victoria used one word to describe her feelings: "disgusted."

"I was too annoyed that he seemed to be avoiding parenting altogether," she recalls. "I was exhausted and frustrated, but didn't realize what was going on until he started playing World of Warcraft ... It was infuriating to hear his phone conversations include extensive planning for a gaming session."

She felt abandoned. "I couldn't believe that someone could choose a virtual family over a real one."

One reason Van Cleave was so captivated: It offered different perspectives. Previously, most games Van Cleave played were seen from a bird's eye view, looking down at the action. In WoW, a player can zoom, pan and look at a scene exactly how a human does in real life. And as Van Cleave discovered, the WoW characters didn't just jerk and shuffle across the screen while playing; they could swim, fly and even dance.

Because he had a free, 30-day trial of WoW, Van Cleave figured he would "play the crap out of it" and then discard the game. He had never paid a monthly game subscription before.

But he didn't uninstall the game at the end of the trial. And he did end up buying a subscription.

Three years into his job at Clemson, Van Cleave's life began to fall apart. His four dogs died, one after another from various causes. His wife was pregnant again. Then Van Cleave began to get the impression that other faculty disliked him and wanted him gone. But he didn't try to repair the rifts, instead channeling his anxieties into WoW, a virtual world he could control. Time management was his biggest problem, he said.

Van Cleave called it his "black period."

"All that tethered me to anything meaningful during this time was WoW, which I clung to for dear life," he wrote.

For millions who play, the lure of games like WoW is irresistible. They're called massively multiplayer online role-playing games.

Players create an "avatar," or online character, who operates within a startlingly detailed storyline and graphics. Playing makes the gamer feel like the star of a really awesome sci-fi movie.

While in-game, characters form "guilds," or teams, and go on "quests" to find items, conquer lands or achieve new levels. They occasionally fight with other players or guilds, slay zombies, clash with evil elves or kill monsters. Players talk to each other in the game via headsets and often form intense friendships.

"People play those games often in a desire to meet their social needs," said Hilarie Cash, a Washington state therapist who runs a six-bed inpatient program for Internet and video game addicts. "There's a sense of friendship and self-esteem you develop with your teammates, you can compete and be cooperative. It really feels as though it meets your social needs."

When he started playing in 2004, Van Cleave named his avatar BurritoThief, a gnome with the power to cast magical spells with ice. With each task completed amid molten lava or other vivid scenes, Burrito Thief earned points, and with each kill, each quest, each obstacle overcome, Van Cleave rose within the game's ranks.

Unlike other games, WoW didn't end. It went on and on, with characters roaming through different realms and meeting new people along the way. When Van Cleave had reached the apex of one world and hit the maximum points a character could possess, there were always other characters to create and more loot to amass. Meanwhile, the game makers offered expansions every year, which meant new worlds to explore, new levels to achieve.

"There was always something better and cooler," he said. "You can never have enough in-game money, enough armor, enough support. You've got to keep up with the virtual Joneses."

Cash, the therapist, puts this in context, saying that rewards, levels and scenes change regularly, hooking the gamer.

"We've become very, very sophisticated about designing the right reinforcement schedule to keep people interested," she said. "They are really consciously building highly addictive games."

The maker of World of Warcraft, Blizzard Entertainment, declined to comment when contacted by The Associated Press.

In the past five years, news stories have described people suffering exhaustion after playing a game for 50 hours straight, of teens killing their parents after having games taken away and of parents neglecting infants while mesmerized by the online world.

Yet not all authorities believe the games are addictive.

"I do not believe that the concept of `addiction' is useful; it only describes strong temptations; it does not explain strong temptations. What makes the temptation so strong? The memory of past pleasant experiences with the behavior that we are talking about ? in this case videogames," wrote Jackson Toby, a professor emeritus of sociology at Rutgers University, in an email to The Associated Press. "I don't believe that someone can be addicted to videogames."

The American Psychiatric Association will not list video game addiction as a mental disorder in the 2012 edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. However, the APA said there is a possibility that a group of reward-seeking behavioral disorders ? including video game addiction and Internet addiction ? will be included in an appendix of DSM-5 to "encourage further study."

Van Cleave and others disagree, insisting video game addiction is similar to gambling addiction.

By the time his second baby was born in 2007, Van Cleave was playing some 60 hours a week.

A few months later, Clemson didn't renew his contract and said he would not achieve tenure. He was hired for a one-year fellowship at George Washington University, teaching one class, but that meant he had more time for gaming while the stress of finding a long-term, full-time job ratcheted up.

As Van Cleave's professional prospects dwindled ? he applied for dozens of teaching jobs yet no school seemed to want him after Clemson_ his gaming skill increased. It was as if World of Warcraft was the only thing he was good at. At least it felt that way. He had achieved 75,000 "kills." A sense of accomplishment, and the corresponding adrenaline rush, he said, were powerful incentives to keep playing.

Van Cleave spent money on gaming. He bought two new computers so he could see better game graphics.

In 2007, Van Cleave had three different World of Warcraft accounts (each at a cost of $14.95 a month). A secret Paypal account paid for two of the accounts so his wife wouldn't hound him about the cost.

He now had dozens of avatars spread out within various realms. When one WoW realm would occasionally go down for maintenance, Van Cleave moved to backup accounts in different realms, allowing him to play continuously.

He spent $224 in real money to buy fake gold, so he could get an in-game "epic-level sword" and some "top-tier armor" for his avatar named Azzkicker, a level-70 human warrior. He had seven characters at this highest level then achievable.

Changes in Van Cleave's personality began to appear. Among those who noticed was his best friend from high school, Rob Opitz, who lived in another state but played "World of Warcraft" with him for years.

"When things in IRL ? in real life ? would interrupt what was going on in the game, he would get very loud very quickly about those things," Opitz recalled. "During that time, it's kind of like everything was completely over the top. It wasn't that he was a little mad, he was in a full-blown rage."

Van Cleave was about to hit bottom.

___

It was Dec. 31, 2007. Van Cleave was halfway through his yearlong fellowship at George Washington University. Yet there he was, standing on the Arlington Memorial Bridge. He was thinking about jumping into the icy water.

He had been gaming for 18 hours straight and wasn't feeling well. He had told his wife that he was going to buy cough drops for his sore throat. But his misery was not just physical.

"My kids hate me. My wife is threatening (again) to leave me," Van Cleave would write in his book. "My friends no longer bother to call. My parents are so mad at me, they don't bother to visit their only grandchildren anymore ... I haven't written anything in countless months. I have no prospects for the next academic year. And I am perpetually exhausted from skipping sleep so I can play more Warcraft."

That night marked the first time Van Cleave realized he had a problem.

"It's embarrassing, isn't it? ..." he said. "Everything that you do as a video game addict, is usually small incremental steps. I was like a Charlie Sheen of WoW. Unapologetic and like a rebel, like, screw you, I'm going to play this game...even though I'm not being the best role model for my kids, I'm not being the best husband, I'm not being good to myself."

The self-examination pulled him back from the bridge railing. He went home and deleted the game from his computer.

For the next week, he felt horrible: His stomach hurt, he had migranes and was drenched in sweat ? like an addict withdrawing from drugs.

Staying away from WoW was difficult, but didn't re-install the game.

And he started rebuilding ? In Real Life.

He began repairing the relationship with his wife and family. At one point long after quitting, he asked his daughter to draw him a picture; in crayon, she drew one of her father sitting at a computer and a second with BurritoThief, his gnome character from WoW.

Said Victoria, his wife: "I didn't believe him. I had heard it all before and had no confidence that he would stop."

Van Cleave worked on his professional life. He freelanced, wrote poems and young adult books. He wrote the tell-all about his addiction, titled "Unplugged" and published last year.

He set his sights on a job, sending out 182 resumes.

In 2010, he was hired as an English professor at the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota. Van Cleave and his family bought a beige stucco home in a quiet subdivision.

It's an irony in Van Cleave's new, game-free life that Ringling is one of the nation's top schools for video game designers.

"I'm not holding a crusade on campus," he said. "The school really likes the idea that they are on the cutting edge of these technologies and ideas."

Yet he knows his students spend much of their lives online, and he worries about them. "I don't think video games are evil," said Van Cleave. "That's not what I'm saying at all. I think games are fine if they are part of a balanced life."

Last semester, he had two students in class who talked about WoW non-stop. "Super jargony geek-speak about the minutiae of the game," he said. It made Van Cleave anxious.

His wife, too, is worried that he will relapse.

"Although I believe Ryan has his gaming impulses under control, sometimes I still worry that he may start again," she said. "I also have concerns that my children may have a pre-disposition to gaming addiction in the same way that the children of an alcoholic might."

She added that she thinks that gaming can be educational, but monitors her daughters' playing time and tries to tell them often that "that they are playing a game and none of it is real."

Over the past year, Van Cleave has talked about out-of-control gaming to various mental health groups. Recently, he spoke to the Institute on Addiction Studies in Toronto.

"Some of the things Ryan said, people were blown away, especially the older people," said David Rourke, the chairman of the Canadian institute. "The fact that there could be video game addiction was an eye opener to them."

But even now, four years after he stopped gaming, Van Cleave thinks about World of Warcraft. At first, he occasionally bought a copy but would not download it. Just being close to it gave him a delicious thrill.

Then there are his dreams.

In them, he is playing one of his former characters, running through the virtual world. When he wakes, sweating and out of breath, he always has the same impulse: to rush to the computer and log into the game.

Interview: Passion for Handmade Designs in a Commercial World with ...

Sam Hughes has been making and selling handmade lamps and lampshades for several years. Sam is a trained textile designer at?Central St. Martins school of Art, London and has worked as a print designer for a wide variety of companies in?the fashion and interiors businesses in London and New York. He started the lamp making business out of a desire to make design as well (we find out he is also a trained counselor! ). Since he launched Sam Hughes Lighting, the firm has grown steadily and become a busy business with a base of customers who look for individual and beautiful items for their homes. e decided to challenge Sam for an interview and find out how his business is going.

  • Freshome: What triggered the idea of designing a range of lamps and lampshades ?
  • Sam Hughes: I was inspired by my collection of vintage fabrics and noticed that there was a gap in the market for more interesting and patterned lighting. I wanted to make something original and retro inspired to compliment modern interiors.

Clipboard035 Interview: Passion for Handmade Designs in a Commercial World with Sam Hughes

?

  • Freshome: What materials do you use for creating these designs?
  • Sam Hughes: I draw by hand with pen, paint and ink and experiment with shapes and images. I then scan images into my computer and rework them on screen to develop repeat patterns and colourways that will work as shades. They are then digitally printed onto high quality cotton and I make the fabric pieces into shades. I also hand make the bases (with the help of a wood turner!) and wire the lamps. I feel very proud that I entirely make the product myself.

Dandi Pop Red1 Interview: Passion for Handmade Designs in a Commercial World with Sam Hughes

?

  • Freshome: Where do you find your inspiration?
  • Sam Hughes: I find my inspiration from vintage surface pattern. I collect textiles, ceramics and crockery from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. I also look at illustration from those decades.
  • Freshome: How long ago did you start your business?
  • Sam Hughes: I started my business in 2005, at first using my vintage textile collection to make all the shades. In the last year I have designed my own fabrics for the shades and now sell those alongside the vintage pieces.
  • Freshome: What are the reaction you usually get from your target/ buyers??
  • Sam Hughes: People seem to love them! Quite often customers come back to me for a second or third lamp once they have bought one. Everyone comments on how original they are and how much they love the colours, designs and quality.

Lilly aqua1 Interview: Passion for Handmade Designs in a Commercial World with Sam Hughes

  • Freshome: What are your plans for the future?
  • Sam Hughes: I would like to continue to expand the business and hope at some point to develop some designs with a major retailer.
  • Freshome: Are you interested in other work field (except design) ?
  • Sam Hughes: I am also a trained counselor!

Circles red Interview: Passion for Handmade Designs in a Commercial World with Sam Hughes

  • Freshome: Tell us something unusual that happened since you started your business.
  • Sam Hughes: Nothing crazy, but I have been truly delighted by how much value people place in hand made products and carefully crafted, thoughtful design.
  • Freshome: In case there is anything else you would like the world to know about you or your ideas, here is your chance to share.
  • Sam Hughes: I pride myself on producing original, interesting and beautiful hand made products in a commercial world that is more and more dominated by mass production and mass selling. People really respond to good design, personal service and they love the idea of buying something that is truly a one off or part of a limited edition.

Another Delay for The Wolverine

The Wolverine 2 Delayed

[Update: There are now conflicting reports that The Wolverine won't be delayed, and will start filming in Canada this fall. Scroll down for details.]

Hugh Jackman was the poster boy for Bryan Singer?s X-Men trilogy, and even though the director dropped out of the third installment, Jackman remained the star of the show in the career-making role of Wolverine. The success of the mutant franchise led Jackman to getting his own spin-off movie, a prequel explaining his character?s history in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. While critics panned it as another weak installment in the franchise after the poorly received X-Men: The Last Stand, the movie made big coin as the summer?s kick-off movie of 2009.

This success led to the quick greenlight of a sequel, to be titled The Wolverine,?that would explore a story from Marvel Comics that Hugh Jackman really wanted to get into: that of Wolverine?s adventures in Japan. With a screenplay from Christopher McQuarrie and the re-teaming of Jackman with Oscar nominated director Darren Aronofsky, things were looking up until a number of factors started to claw away at the plans Twentieth Century Fox had in mind.

Aronofsky dropped out of The Wolverine, shattering some expectations early, then the awful and destructive weather?conditions?Japan fought through put a damper on principal photography plans for March. Fox was able to find a replacement director in James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma) but still hasn?t locked down a shedule.

We spoke with Jackman at Comic-Con in July and he seemed optimistic for the project, confirming the main villain of the movie as the Silver Samurai, and that they plan to shoot in October. Now comes word that the production may be pushed back even further, to some point in spring 2012, after Jackman finishes with Les Miserables.

Deadline has the scoop which also reveals that since Japan is still recovering, the production may move to Canada, saving only a bit for Japan, if any at all.?What?s really a bummer is that if production on The Wolverine does in fact change location to Canada, then Darren Aronofsky could have directed it all along, especially since it is being delayed. The official reason for his departure on the project was that he didn?t want to shoot overseas for an extended period of time, keeping him away from family.

There was of course speculation of creative differences between him and the studio regarding the story and style of The Wolverine, but Mangold is the new man in charge when it still could have been Aronofsky. Hindsight is a kicker.

UPDATE: An Celebrity & Entertainment writer for the Vancouver Sun contacted us when this story was posted, claiming that The Wolverine will NOT be delayed, but rather will start filming in Canada this fall. As writer/reporter Katya Holloway told us via Twitter:

Wolverine is scheduled to begin filming in Vancouver in November

As of now FOX has not made any comment on which version of the story is true, but it seemed as though Holloway was pretty certain of the production schedule. We?ll have to wait and see. Stay tuned.

A spring start date ? which Fox still hasn?t confirmed ? would have? The Wolverine hitting theaters as far as way as summer 2013 unless they can rush it for a holiday release in 2012. With no timeline on a sequel to X-Men: First Class or the teased X-Men 4 and New Mutants movies, the X-Men franchise is getting installments few and far between.

Exercise the Key to better Mental and Physical Health | Online ...

Stress and Depression can wreak havoc on anyone including: college professors, doctors, housewives, laborers, and students. It is an illness that will affect every facet of your life; your physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. I know this first hand as I began my own recovery from drugs and steroids and the mind numbing depression that followed over nineteen years age can play a vital role in relieving stress and depression. Often people go to group therapy or 12 step programs which is great. But as I found out the smoke filled meeting halls were full of people who drank endless cups of coffee and loaded up on donuts and cookies. I would use caffeine and sugar to take the place of drugs which lead to a sense of false comfort.

There is growing evidence that exercise can play a vital role in the recovery process as a way to alleviate the paralyzing effects of stress, depression and other emotional disorders. In Conquer Stress and Depression with Exercise (CF Publishing, 2006), J. Alexander Bodkin, M.D., Chief of The Clinical Psychopharmacology at McLean Hospital, states ?In my clinical work with people suffering from mood and anxiety problems, and the substance abuse that often follows from these, I have found time and time again that consistent, reasonably vigorous exercise is a great help. By the time people get to me as patients, exercise alone is no longer enough, but it remains a critical component of a total treatment program. Exercise will hasten recovery, improve well being, increase stress tolerance, relieve physical discomforts, improve physical health and appearance, and boost self-esteem and self-confidence.?

An individual suffering from stress and depression can reap amazing benefits from a properly designed fitness program. Through exercise you get a feeling of accomplishment, increased energy (less fatigue), increased productivity, greater concentration, improved sleep, and an overall feeling of uplifted spirits.

The problem is, of course, getting started and motivated to stick with an exercise program. This is especially true for individuals in under emotional stress and depression. A lifetime of low self worth can prevent many people from improving their emotional and physical health. A health club, with all the spandex and beautiful people, is the last place you would want to be if you are you are already feeling lousy about yourself.

This fear is understandable, when I was first learning to live without drugs and going through a severe depression, I couldn?t drag myself back to the gym, even though I knew how to exercise. The gym seemed like a nightclub to me. At that time I wished there was a health club, where someone could understand my predicament.

I responded to these feelings by turning my exercise knowledge into a tool for my own recovery. Since I couldn?t bench press 400 pounds any more, I began to concentrate on the psychological benefits of my fitness routine. I started to focus on each and every movement ? feeling the tightening, contraction and stretch of each muscle group. My mind and body were becoming one. In most people these are two separate entities, I wove them together to feel whole again.

This exercise program which helped me feel alive again, laid the foundation for my work. Today, I am the owner of Custom Fitness Personal Training in Boston, one-on-one personal training facility that specializes in working with individuals suffering from stress and depression. I also work with top executives who are under everyday stress and may be addicted to other things ? like work, money and prestige.

I call my fitness program ? ?Mindful Movements? ? which uses exercise as a way to obtain peak mental and physical health.

There are several steps you should follow:

1) WARMUP-5 minutes riding a bike or walking in place.

2) EXERCISE LARGER MUSCLE FIRST- Start with an exercise for your legs, chest, back, shoulders, arms, and. stomach.

3) KEEP IT LIGHT. If the weight is too heavy you can?t focus on the movement of the muscle and there?s a real chance of injury.

4) MOVE SLOWLY, USE CORRECT FORM.

5) CONCENTRATE ON THE PARTICULAR MUSCLE GROUP YOU ARE EXERCISING. You want to focus on the mind/muscle connection. Feel the muscle tighten on the way up, feel the contraction at the top of the movement, and concentrate on the stretch on the way down.

6) BREATHE CORRECTLY. Exhale through your mouth when lifting and inhale through your nose when lowering the weight.

7) GO EASY AT FIRST, SET REALISTIC GOALS. Don?t try to look like Mr. Muscles or a supermodel. Your appearance will come if you enjoy the exercise routine.

Good Luck!

Basement Waterproofing To Protect Your Floor | AutoRoll - Home ...

Folks often negate from the fact that the potential problem to their basement foundation is damage to the basement floor itself. They tend to focus on the walls instead of the floor. This has been prevalent among houses with no proper drainage system. ?Amazingly, when hydrostatic pressure gets its job done, water in the soil pushes itself beyond the basement floor. ?It practically leave nothing unturned as it forces its way evenly to the surfaces of the foundation. More often than not, those who purposely deviate from the basics of proper basement waterproofing are caught up blaming themselves for not doing so.

Normally, groundwater and rain water in undeveloped areas moves up without much obstruction through the soil as gravity goes to work. That?s were your underground reservoir feeds as well as the many forms of waterbased natural attraction do. Thus when homebuilders so decide to mount that foundation where ?groundwater ?saturation is on a high note, expects a much interesting battle. A blockage on its passage surely poses a great deal of activity through that foundation walls. A well planned drainage system in place should leave you with lesser things to probe.

As it is, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Check around your foundation drainage system and put that plan to a test even before water starts to drip from above. For all you know, this hydrostatic pressure phenomenon may already have caused some cracks, seeping moisture, mold and mildew buildup in your basement walls and up against the floor. That should translate to a few more hundred dollars if not given attention.

Clay basement footer drain tiles should do the trick, by channeling the flow of water outward and leaving hydrostatic pressure on the walls and floor out of the way. Unless of course you home is a century old structure, it is never without a form of drainage constructed alongside your foundation. Given that scenario, a simple repair and living clean and green is all it takes to waterproofing your wallet.

Even so, dirt, tree roots, and some broken tiles can cause obstruction to your existing clay footer drain tiles, causing the water to change its course and work its way up than rather just simply moving away from your home. Nonetheless, should this occur, your friendly handyman in the neighborhood drain cleaning company can easily pinpoint the blockage by tapping on one small section of your drainage pipes surrounding your foundation. Fix the problem without necessarily digging through your entire abode.

Secure several free estimates from trusted basement waterproofing company prior to accepting a final quotation to fix your damaged walls and basement floor. Acting on it soonest before the worst should come should spell out a lot of savings.
