Vatican hails U.N. Palestine vote, wants guarantees for Jerusalem

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican hailed the United Nations' implicit recognition of a Palestinian state on Thursday and called for an internationally guaranteed special status for Jerusalem, something bound to irritate Israel.

The 193-nation U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly approved a resolution to upgrade the Palestinian Authority's observer status at the United Nations from "entity" to "non-member state," the same status as the Vatican.

"The Holy See welcomes with favor the decision of the General Assembly by which Palestine has become a Non-member Observer State of the United Nations," a statement said.

But it also said it was a "propitious occasion" to recall a "common position" on Jerusalem expressed by the Vatican and the Palestine Liberation Organisation when the two sides signed a basic agreement on their bilateral relations in 2000.

Thursday's statement called for "an internationally guaranteed special statute" for Jerusalem, aimed at "safeguarding the freedom of religion and of conscience, the identity and sacred character of Jerusalem as a Holy City, (and) respect for, and freedom of, access to its holy places."

The Vatican's re-stating of its position on Jerusalem, which has remained mostly dormant for years, was bound to irk Israel, which says there is no need for an international status for Jerusalem because those guarantees already exist.

Israel declared Jerusalem its "united and eternal" capital in 1980 after annexing East Jerusalem in the Six Day War in 1967. World powers have not recognized the annexation.

Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of an eventual state.

Israel has always resisted the concept of any form of international mandate over Jerusalem.

It has been some time since the Vatican re-stated its position on the city so forcefully, and Thursday's statement was bound to be received negatively by Israel, a diplomat with direct knowledge of their relations said.

Israel has always maintained that it already guarantees the city's special nature as sacred to the three great monotheistic religions - Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

Thursday's statement called on both sides to seek an "effective commitment to building peace and stability, in justice and in the respect for legitimate aspirations, both of the Israelis and of the Palestinians."

The Vatican and Israel established full diplomatic relations in 1994. Both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict visited the Jewish state and Palestinian territories.

Samsung Galaxy Camera EK-GC100 (AT&T)

Samsung is ahead of the curve when it comes to connected cameras. The company built an excellent Wi-Fi implementation into both point-and-shoots like its WB850F ?and advanced interchangeable lens cameras like the NX1000 . At the same time, it leads the pack in Android handset development. And its Galaxy S III? smartphone?walked away with our Editors' Choice award for Android phones.

It's only logical that Samsung would eventually combine a camera and an Android media player into one device. The resulting 16-megapixel Samsung Galaxy Camera ($499.99 list) is a bit of a Frankenstein product?it's very large for a camera, even one with a 21x zoom lens, and thick when compared with a phone. It offers 3G connectivity (although you'll have to pay a monthly fee for that privilege), it lets you use photo apps like Instagram, and it lets you fling Angry Birds at disgruntled pigs?but no, it doesn't make phone calls. Despite its ambitious design, the Galaxy Camera doesn't oust the 20x-zooming Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX30V ?as our Editors' Choice superzoom camera. The HX30V runs circles around the Galaxy from a performance perspective, although its Wi-Fi and Internet-sharing capabilities are nowhere near as slick.

Design and Features
The Galaxy Camera is big. It's bigger than any compact superzoom I've used, and it's bigger than an interchangeable lens camera like the Olympus PEN Lite E-PL5. It measures 2.8 by 5.1 by 0.75 inches (HWD), and it's no featherweight at 11 ounces. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 , which has a shorter zoom lens but a much larger 1-inch image sensor, is only 2.4 by 4 by 1.4 inches in size and 8.5 ounces in weight.

The main reason for the size of the Galaxy is the huge 4.8-inch, 16:9 widescreen display. Most rear LCDs top out at 3 inches at a 4:3 ratio. It's astounding how much different this makes using the camera as compared with a run-of-the-mill point-and-shoot. One downside to the big screen is that it doesn't look quite as sharp as the displays on the best digital cameras. Even though it's 1,280-by-720 and thus 921k dots in resolution, just like the LCD found on the Nikon Coolpix S9300 , the larger screen size reduces the pixel density.

The first question that popped into my mind when I picked up the Galaxy Camera was, oddly enough, "Where does my thumb go?" The big touch-sensitive LCD occupies almost the entirety of the Galaxy's backside. I have thick fingers and was worried that holding the camera normally would result in accidentally changing settings. Thankfully this proved not to be the case, as the bezel is just wide enough so my right thumb can rest against it when shooting, without accidentally setting off the touch-shutter. Due to the overall size of the camera I ended up taking photos with both hands, resting my left hand near the lens as I would with a compact interchangeable lens camera or SLR.

Physical controls are nonexistent. This is not a device well-suited for shutterbugs who demand quick control over settings. There's a zoom rocker built into the shutter control, a Power button, and a button to raise the flash. To lower it, simply push it down into the body. All shooting controls?ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed, Shooting Mode, Exposure Compensation, and the like?are adjusted via the touch-sensitive LCD. The controls are big enough on the screen to make them usable, but they are no substitute for real physical controls. That's a shame, as there is more than enough room on the front of the body for a simple control wheel, and the top has plenty of space for a Mode Dial or EV Compensation dial. Advanced shooters will appreciate the ability to add a grid overlay to the live view display, not unlike those found on now-ancient manual focusing screens. I opted for a 3-by-3 grid, but there are also 4-by-4, 2-by-2, and diagonal patterns.

If you're the type to leave your camera in auto, or simply use your phone for all of your camera needs, chances are you'll seldom venture out of automatic mode. That's why Samsung has built a number of "smart scene" modes. You can scroll through presets that best capture fireworks, night scenes, fast action, macro objects, panoramic views, and more. For group shots, there's a special Best Face mode?it takes five images in succession and lets you mix and match the best expressions from people in the shot?so you can salvage a good family photo, even if Uncle Karl has his eyes closed in half the shots.

You can fire the shutter by pressing a physical button, but you can also touch a big onscreen camera icon to shoot a photo. There's a box that lets you know where the camera is focusing, but you can override this by touching the area of the frame on which you'd like to focus. If you feel like controlling the shutter with your voice you can make it take a photo by saying "cheese," or "shoot," and activate a 10-second self-timer by simply saying "timer."

The default camera app gives you full control over the 21x (23-483mm equivalent) zoom lens. Having such a powerful zoom is one of the biggest advantages that the camera holds over smartphone cameras. The iPhone 5 and its ilk feature fixed lenses that don't cover as wide of an angle as this lens, and couldn't dream about zooming in to capture close detail. Macro focusing is supported, and while you can't butt the lens right up against your subject, you can focus on objects about 1.5 inches from the front element when using the Smart Macro scene mode. If you just activate macro shooting in Program mode, you'll be limited to 2-inch close focus.

Unfortunately, not all Android camera apps support zooming. If you're a fan of Instagram, Pixlr-o-matic, or Retro Camera, you'll be left shooting the camera at its widest focal length. Of course, you can shoot a zoomed-in photo using the standard camera app and later add filters using your favorite retro camera filter program, but it would be nice to see these apps updated to support zoom control. Social networking apps that use the default Android camera like Foursquare and Untappd do not face this limitation?they just take you into the full-feature application and allow you to snap away.

There are a few Samsung-specific Android apps installed that will aid in photo sharing. While most users will likely share photos via Facebook, Flickr, or Twitter?all available for download via the Google Play store?users with multiple Samsung devices will be interested in AllShare Play and Group Cast. AllShare Play is a DLNA server that makes it possible to push your photos and videos to Samsung devices, your PC, and other connected devices. Group Cast lets other devices on your current Wi-Fi network connect to the Galaxy Camera, via a password, to see your photos and videos. Device-to-device sharing is also supported via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct, both accessible from the camera application.

Gene linked to respiratory distress in babies

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Some infants are more susceptible to potentially life-threatening breathing problems after birth, and rare, inherited DNA differences may explain why, according to research at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

The study is the first to identify a single gene -- ABCA3 -- that is associated with a significant number of cases of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in babies born at or near full term. RDS is the most common respiratory problem in newborns and the most common lung-related cause of death and disease among U.S. infants less than a year old.

Their findings will be published in the December 2012 issue of Pediatrics and are available online.

The research may lead to new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for prevention and treatment to improve respiratory outcomes for babies.

"We found that mutations in ABCA3 account for about 10 percent of respiratory disease in babies born near their due dates," said Jennifer A. Wambach, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics and the study's lead author. "These are babies who we typically think should have mature lungs and breathe normally. While we have known for a while that RDS is a heritable disease, this is the first gene to account for a significant proportion of disease among infants that are full-term or nearly full-term."

RDS occurs when an infant's lungs don't produce enough surfactant, a liquid that coats the inside of the lungs and helps keep them open so the baby can breathe. If there isn't enough surfactant, an infant has to work hard to breathe and may suffer from a lack of oxygen. Premature infants are at especially high risk of RDS, as surfactant production increases as babies near term. However, 2 percent to 3 percent of term and near-term babies also develop RDS.

The researchers' findings suggest a range of possibilities, Wambach said. These include using the genetic knowledge to plan affected infants' births near hospitals with neonatal intensive-care units and developing medical therapies to target the abnormal protein resulting from these mutations.

Wambach said the researchers hope to identify additional genes that cause neonatal RDS and better identify babies at risk.

"But right now we're studying how these mutations function in the laboratory," Wambach said. "Statistical associations help guide us, but we also need to understand the biology of these mutations."

The research team -- including Aaron Hamvas, MD, and F. Sessions Cole, MD -- evaluated five genes known to be important for normal breathing immediately after birth. Hamvas is the James Keating Professor of Pediatrics and medical director of the newborn intensive care unit at St. Louis Children's Hospital. Cole is the Park J. White, MD, Professor of Pediatrics.

The team looked at five genes involved in the metabolism of lung surfactant by taking DNA samples from more than 500 infants of African and European descent, with and without respiratory distress, who were carried to term or near term. They evaluated the same genes in an additional 48 babies with especially severe respiratory distress to see if their findings applied to that group, and in a third group of 1,066 Missouri babies, to determine the frequency of the mutations in a general population.

In comparing babies with and without respiratory distress, they found that babies of European descent with respiratory distress were more likely to have a single mutation in ABCA3, one of the five genes tested, than the infants with no breathing problems. Babies of African descent with respiratory distress also were more likely to have single ABCA3 mutations, but this difference did not reach statistical significance.

More than one-quarter of the babies with especially severe respiratory distress had a single mutation in ABCA3. Infants who inherit two defective copies of the ABCA3 gene usually require lung transplantation for survival. However, this is the first study to show that a single mutation in ABCA3 predisposes infants to respiratory distress that can usually be treated with neonatal intensive care.

The researchers also found that 1.5 percent to 3.6 percent of babies born in Missouri carry a single ABCA3 mutation, leading the researchers to estimate that about 10 percent of RDS cases among term and near-term infants may be attributable to mutations in ABCA3.

"We picked five candidate genes and thought we would find rare mutations in all of the genes," Wambach said. "However, we found very few mutations in the other genes, and they were not associated with RDS. Our findings were really isolated to this one gene, ABCA3."

JFK portrait found hidden in old frame

A $5 garage-sale find turned out to contain a hidden treasure worth thousands. Here's what happened.

Pam Dwyer of Glendale, Ariz., picked up a picture of a horse at a garage sale in Sun City. Dwyer's husband had a hunch they were getting something more. Dwyer told CBS 5, "He says, 'I just have this gut feeling that there's something behind that.'"

There was. An amazingly detailed and deftly drawn original portrait of John F. Kennedy, signed and dated from 1961.

The story gets odder. Dwyer did some research on the artist. Carmelo Soraci, she learned, was an infamous forger who did time for passing false checks, spending 21 years locked up in Dannemora Prison in New York, where he turned to a creative outlet of stained-glass making, which he discovered while "in college" inside.

The former forger redeemed himself by eventually building and installing stained-glass windows in the chapel at the prison, and was asked to do the same at Sing Sing Prison. He also apparently drew.

Dwyer took the portrait to an appraiser, who valued the piece at $2,500 to $5,000. "I'm happy with how much she was impressed by it," Dwyer said.

Dwyer added she would probably sell it?we're guessing not at a garage sale.

Real Madrid loses 1-0 at Real Betis in Spain

By JOSEPH WILSON

updated 8:18 p.m. ET Nov. 24, 2012

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -The Spanish league is barely three months old, but Real Madrid's title defense is in serious danger after Real Betis midfielder Benat Etxebarria struck from long range to deal last season's champion a 1-0 loss on Saturday.

Madrid appeared to have put its struggles from earlier this season well behind it after stringing together five straight wins, but even with Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Kaka on the pitch, it failed to break through a Betis defense that had lost by four or more goals three times this season.

Jose Mourinho's team is in third place and can find itself an imposing 11 points behind Barcelona if the league leader wins at Levante on Sunday.

The largest deficit ever overcome by a team that went on to win La Liga was eight points by Rafa Benitez's Valencia in 2004.

A stern Mourinho acknowledged that it would be "difficult" to repeat as domestic champions.

"I understand that our fans are pessimistic. It is very possible that we will arrive to the end of December 11, 12, 13 points behind," he said. "But it is still possible. We have to try to cut and cut and cut into (Barcelona's) lead."

After being routed 5-1 by Sevilla in the Seville derby just six days before, Pepe Mel's Betis appeared to be an easy target for a Madrid that had just eliminated English champion Manchester City from the Champions League and was unbeaten in eight rounds.

But Betis emerged victorious thanks to an impressive physical display that never wavered through 90-plus minutes.

"It was a tough week for both the team and our fans. We deserved this win," a breathless Etxebarria said. "We had a good game plan and worked hard in defense. They didn't have many clear scoring chances and we had some more on the break."

It was Betis' second win in 22 games in all competitions against Madrid since 2001.

Both sides' pressing style set a fast pace from the start at Benito Villamarin Stadium, but after Madrid's Sami Khedira missed a good look on goal Etxebarria netted what proved to be the winner 17 minutes in.

The Basque player picked up Angel Di Maria's wild clearance from the flank, dribbled around Khedira and beat goalkeeper Iker Casillas with right-footed shot from about 23 yards.

"I was fortunate the ball fell to me," said Etxebarria, a Spain international. "I controlled it and shot and it went in."

Madrid bombarded Betis' area with crosses, but came no closer before halftime than Di Maria's shots into the side and the top of the netting.

Mourinho sent on playmakers Luka Modric and Kaka at the start of the second half for Mesut Oezil and fellow Germany international Khedira.

And when the leveler didn't come, the Portuguese manager soon threw forward Jose Callejon into the mix.

Yet even with all its firepower, Madrid couldn't convert its scarce opportunities while giving up chances to Betis' Salva Sevilla and Ruben Castro on counterattacks.

The nearest Madrid came was a Kaka shot that drew a diving parry from goalkeeper Adrian San Miguel, who bounced back in fine form from his woeful performance in last week's loss at Sevilla.

Madrid only dropped seven points away from Santiago Bernabeu Stadium last season en route to the title. It has already relinquished 11 points on the road through 13 rounds this campaign.

Also, Malaga outclassed a drab Valencia 4-0 thanks to a goal and assist by midfielder Francisco Portillo in Saturday's meeting of two of Spain's sides to reach the knockout rounds of the Champions League.

Leonardo Carrilho's strike three minutes from time sparked Rayo Vallecano to a 2-0 home win over Mallorca, while Valladolid broke a streak of three home draws by beating Granada 1-0 thanks to Angola striker Manucho's second-half goal.

Second-place Atletico Madrid hosts Sevilla on Sunday, while Espanyol hosts Getafe and Deportivo La Coruna visits Athletic Bilbao. Real Zaragoza plays Celta Vigo on Monday.

Real Sociedad drew 0-0 with Osasuna at home on Friday.

PFT: Ryan still sticking with Sanchez

Jerry JonesAP

The man with the biggest talk and the biggest television set in Texas said he didn?t think his coach has ?lost the team,? but it?s clear Jerry Jones isn?t happy with the way things have gone.

After yesterday?s 38-31 loss to the Redskins, which dropped them to 5-6 and marked the fourth straight home game they?ve trailed by double digits, Jones made it clear he expects success.

?That would be real difficult right now because you would have to point to things like comebacks, and that?s hollow when you are not winning the game,? Jones said, via Tim McMahon of ESPNDallas.com. ?Or last week, we win one [against the Browns] and we have to come back to win it, but we don?t win it playing well. So that?s hollow right now.?

Talk of coach Jason Garrett?s future is valid, not just because he?s the coach of the Cowboys, but because he?s 18-17 as a head coach.

?I don?t want to be talking about looking through,? Jones said. ?Our expectations were to compete for the playoffs and then whatever else we can get when you get there, compete for. We know you?ve got to be playing well when you get there.

?We?ve had some setbacks on some injuries, but that?s not the difference out here right now at all.?

The Cowboys have already been linked to a pair of big-fish names already (Sean Payton and Mike Holmgren) and that talk isn?t going to slow down until or unless they string together some wins.

?Yeah, I expect success,? Jones said when asked if a lack of success could force him to consider changes this offseason. ?Now, I don?t have any implied or anything that I?ve said, ?Success, a level of success, or else.? I?m not going there and haven?t ? and haven?t gone there in my mind.

?I expected to come in here and win today. And I expected to win again and to win again. Under those circumstances, you don?t have to think about those things.?

OK, then. Happy Thanksgiving Jason.

Congolese rebels seize Goma, take airport

GOMA, Congo (AP) ? A rebel group believed to be backed by Rwanda seized the strategic, provincial capital of Goma in eastern Congo on Tuesday, home to more than 1 million people as well as an international airport in a development that threatens to spark a new, regional war, officials and witnesses said.

Explosions and machine-gun fire rocked the lakeside city as the M23 rebels pushed forward on two fronts: toward the city center and along the road that leads to Bukavu, another provincial capital which lies to the south. Civilians ran down sidewalks looking for cover and children shouted in alarm. A man clutched a thermos as he ran.

Thousands of residents fled across the border to Rwanda, the much-smaller nation to the east which is accused of funneling arms and recruits to the M23 rebels.

By early afternoon the gunfire had stopped and M23 soldiers marched down the potholed main boulevards, unimpeded. Their senior commanders, who the United Nations has accused of grave crimes including recruiting child soldiers, summary executions and rape, paraded around the town in all-terrain vehicles, waving to the thousands of people who left their barricaded houses to see them.

The United Nations peacekeepers, known by their acronym MONUSCO, were not helping the government forces during Tuesday's battle because they do not have a mandate to engage the rebels, said Congolese military spokesman Olivier Hamuli, who expressed frustration over the lack of action by the peacekeepers.

"MONUSCO is keeping its defensive positions. They do not have the mandate to fight the M23. Unfortunately, the M23 did not obey the MONUSCO warnings and went past their positions (at the airport). We ask that the MONUSCO do more," he said.

A U.N. spokesman said in New York said that the nearly 1,500 U.N. peacekeepers in Goma held their fire to avoid triggering a battle. The peacekeepers "cannot substitute for the efforts of national forces" in Congo, said spokesman Eduardo del Buey.

The rebels are believed to be backed by Rwanda, and to a smaller extent by Uganda, which are accused of equipping them with sophisticated arms, including night vision goggles and 120 mm mortars. Evidence is mounting of the involvement by the neighboring country and on Friday, the United Nations Group of Experts is expected to release its final report, detailing the role the neighboring nations played in the recruitment, financing and arming of the rebel movement, which was born in April.

Congolese government spokesman Lambert Mende said that Rwandan soldiers had crossed into Goma, hiking over footpaths across a volcano that looms between the two countries.

"Goma is in the process of being occupied by Rwanda," said Mende, speaking from Congo's distant capital of Kinshasa. "We have people who saw the Rwandan army traverse our frontier at the Nyamuragira volcano. They have occupied the airport and they are shooting inside the town. Our army is trying to riposte but this poses an enormous problem for them ? this is an urban center where hundreds of thousands of people live," he said.

A Congolese colonel, who was at the frontline in Goma before the city fell, said that the soldiers he saw were Rwandan. Neither his claim nor Mende's could be independently verified.

Congo's President Joseph Kabila flew to Uganda Tuesday for talks with President Yoweri Museveni, a Ugandan government spokesman confirmed. The official spoke in Kampala on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to divulge the information.

M23 rebel spokesman Col. Vianney Kazarama confirmed that they had taken the airport and the city. "We are now inside the city of Goma," he said.

Goma, a city of low-lying buildings, many topped by rusted corrugated roofs, was last threatened by rebels in 2008 when fighters from the now-defunct National Congress for the Defense of the People, or CNDP, stopped just short of the city. Their backs to the wall, the Congolese government agreed to enter into talks with the CNDP and a year later, on March 23, 2009, a peace deal was negotiated calling for the CNDP to put down their arms in return for being integrated into the national army.

The peace deal fell apart this April, when up to 700 soldiers, most of them ex-CNDP members, defected from the army, claiming that the Congolese government had failed to uphold their end of the deal. Like in 2008, they again advanced toward Goma. This time, the city fell and the disastrous consequences for the population were already on display.

At a municipal hospital, 19-year-old Nene Lumbulumbu described how she was cleaning her house, when she was hit by a stray bullet in the torso. A father stood over his little girl's bed, clutching an X-ray showing the bullet lodged in her chest. He had sent her to fetch water in this city where most live without running water. She was brought back by neighbors, after being hit by a bullet.

The hospital was treating children whose arms were sheared off by exploding shells, and teenagers paralyzed from the neck down. Hospital director Justin Lussy said the injuries were just the tip of the iceberg.

"Regional and international actors must now prevent this turning into a new regional war," said the International Crisis Group in a statement. "The past week has shown history repeating itself in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, with the same tragic consequences for civilians in the region."

If the rebels succeed in taking Bukavu, it will mark the biggest gain in rebel territory since at least 2003, when Congo's last war with its neighbors, including Rwanda and Uganda, ended.

Jean-Claude Bampa, who lives near the road to Sake, the first town on the drive to Bukavu, spoke on the telephone over loud gunfire in the background. "I can hear gunshots everywhere, it is all around my home," he said on Tuesday morning. "We are stuck inside and are terrified. I pray this will be over soon."

Pardon the disruption: Magine reframes the future of TV to make it ...

Open an app on your phone and start watching live TV with all the channels you?d get from cable. Pause halfway through and switch to your iPad, then pick up exactly where you left off. Scoot back in time to watch a show you missed from yesterday, then skip to the end with the drag of a finger. Sit on the couch and browse curated lists of programs on your smart TV. Watch the sports channel on the bus while on your way to work. And only pay month to month for the whole service.

This is the future of TV as envisaged by Stockholm?s Magine. The startup already has a working beta being used by 2,000 people in Sweden. The product has been three years in the making. It has 40,000 people on its waiting list, and the company has ?6.5 million (US$8.3 million) in seed funding from family offices and angel investors.

Magine ? say it like ?imagine? without the first letter ? is effectively a cable TV provider that operates solely on the Internet. It will compete squarely against Comhem, Sweden?s Comcast equivalent, and providers in whatever other countries it moves into ? something it plans to do sooner rather than later, starting in Europe.

Last week at Stockholm?s SIME Internet media conference, Magine?s founders demonstrated the app on a sub-optimal wifi connection on stage in front of about 1,000 people. It worked seamlessly, streaming live TV, moving fluidly between channels, and jumping smoothly from point to point within specific programs.

Then, in an off-stage interview, founder and product head Mattias Hjelmstedt showed me the app working on a 3G connection on an iPad. I also played with it myself, and days later used an iPhone version that performed with the same fluidity purely off 3G. Make no mistake: Magine provides a great user experience.

However, this is not territory where startups can tread lightly. We have long been promised that the Internet would change TV for the better. It has, but only in bits and pieces. We have video-on-demand services such as Hulu and Netflix, which live in much different environments to live television. We have online TV channels, such as Current TV and the myriad offerings on YouTube. We?ve had applications that provide programming to compete with broadcasters. We?ve had Joost, Slingbox, Roku, Zattoo, AppleTV, and broadcaster-owned products such as BBC?s iPlayer, HBO Go, and all the on-demand websites for broadcasters around the world. None has been able to supplant or truly revolutionize cable television.

?TV,? as Magine co-founder and CEO Erik Wikstr?m puts it, ?is still the king of the living room.?

That?s why Magine isn?t trying to disrupt television. In fact, Wikstr?m says the company is trying to help broadcasters. It doesn?t want to be seen as a bunch of ?Internet cowboys.? It might be significant that Magine is one of the few Internet companies to have actually removed the ?i? from in front of its name.

In that sense, it fits into a wider movement of Internet startups that seek to work with, rather than up-end, traditional incumbents. Prominent arrivals in this cooperative space include the universal film queue app GoWatchIt, subscription movie tickets service MoviePass, magazines-for-tablets bundler Next Issue, and Spotify, which Daniel Ek started as a way to provide a better alternative to piracy.

Magine is really just an aggregator of broadcast content and TV channels, making their shows truly portable and cross-device, potentially expanding their audiences. All the content is packaged as the broadcasters would present it on any other distributor, complete with ads. Magine doesn?t include any ads of its own, and it provides real-time data to broadcasters. The TV guide looks just like the visual schedule on any cable service, and viewers can go back in time seven days to see shows they otherwise would have missed. That time period is only restricted by the length of time for which the broadcasters have the rights to content they?ve licensed from studios.

iPad view of the Magine app

Wikstr?m sees Magine as a product for the mainstream consumer, but he says it could also help broadcasters connect with cord-cutters and the ?lost generation,? the 18- to 24-year-old demographic that prefers to get their content online and on-demand. ?We?re not TV in a new device,? he says, ?we?re TV in a new way.?

From a product perspective, Magine is the dream, says Jason Hirschhorn, the former co-president of MySpace and former president at Sling Media, maker of the Slingbox. ?This service is a perfect complement to an existing TV subscription,? says Hirschhorn, who has also been a chief digital officer at MTV Networks and is now author of the Media ReDEFined newsletter. ?This is really what ?TV Everywhere? should be. Not just certain programs on demand, but the ability to take your package with you and watch live and on-demand anywhere, as long as you are still a customer.?

But the pay TV industry doesn?t always work in rational ways. Magine?s success is anything but assured. Even though Wikstr?m insists that broadcasters like the service, the company is bound to find itself mired in complicated and protracted rights discussions. For instance, Hirschhorn says that content providers in the US have dragged their feet on ?TV Everywhere? partnerships, waiting for deal renewals and the dollars that come with them, even though it behooves them to have their content be portable.

?Windowing on content is how this industry works and it supports the cost structure,? says Hirschhorn. ?So being innovative and first for your customer in terms of access takes a back seat sometimes to revenue maximization.?

For the time being, Magine isn?t even thinking of the US. The media consolidation there makes it pointless to even try at this point. Time Warner Cable, for instance, is not only a cable provider, it is also a content owner, even though it is now independent of Time Warner (yes, that?s confusing, but true nonetheless), which owns HBO, New Line Cinema, Warner Bros, and a bunch of others. There?s no way it would cooperate with an Internet-based competitor that would steal customers.

So Magine is at first concentrating on Europe. It expects to be in ?two to four? markets by next year. Wikstr?m demurred when asked how many broadcasters Magine has signed up, which suggests it is still facing difficulties in forging agreements.?One venture capitalist told me his concern with Magine was that it?s so far unclear how successful the company has been in shoring up the licenses.

In response to emailed questions seeking clarity on its broadcasting license deals, Magine later said: ?We have enough major broadcaster deals to launch right now, as well as multiple international deals with the leading content owners. These will be announced shortly after consultation with the respective owners.??The beta version has 16 channels signed up to ?beta agreements,? and the company says it expects to launch out of beta with between 50 and 100 channels on board.

Magine?s founding team. CEO?Erik Wikstr?m is second from left; product head Mattias Hjelmstedt is on the far right

Aware of the challenge, Magine has built up a strong team that mixes pay-TV industry experience with technical expertise and marketing nous. Wikstr?m is a serial entrepreneur who co-founded an early Internet consultancy called Icon Medialab and a venture capital firm in Beijing called China Venture Lab. Product head Mattias Hjelmstedt came to Magine from Voddler, a video-on-demand company. And chairman Michael Werner is a former executive with pay TV networks in Scandinavia, Italy, and Spain, as well as the founder of media investment firm SMI Media Invest. The startup also recently hired Andreas Liffgarden, the man responsible for negotiating Spotify?s bundling contracts with telcos in Sweden. It has a team of 38 people now and expects to hit 50 before the end of the year.

Wikstr?m says Magine?s price of subscription will be competitive with cable providers and available on a month to month basis. There?s no need to lock subscribers into a year-long contract, he says, because Magine doesn?t need to subsidize a set-top box. The company is also trying to get the product bundled with smart TVs, and it will offer a ?freemium? option for viewers who aren?t willing to subscribe. In the future, it plans to open up its API to make Magine a platform for third-party apps, with personalization features and social sharing integration coming soon.

It?s easy to forget that we are only at the beginning of the age of Internet-enabled and -distributed content?? ?Day One,? as Jeff Bezos calls it. It is possible that for some industries, perhaps even entertainment, disruption has passed its peak. If Magine prevails, we might well find that the future of television looks a lot like the television we know today, minus, perhaps, a cable company or two. And who?d really miss them?

Atlanta Georgia Foreclosures ? Real Estate | Raw Business Law

documents_agreements.jpg

In today?s real estate market, the practice of purchasing foreclosure properties has gained popularity and considerable steam. Investors and flippers love foreclosure properties for the rock-bottom prices and fast availability.

If you are interested in becoming involved in the Atlanta Georgia Foreclosure market, the first step is to learn how to find suitable properties. One commonly held belief is that foreclosures are only available in depressed real estate markets. While it may be true that the number of available foreclosures rises when the overall market takes a hit, it is worth mentioning that foreclosures can be found even in burgeoning markets ? so, while there will certainly be more properties available in a falling real estate market, there is no such thing as a bad time to look.

One of the best and most fruitful ways to find suitable foreclosure properties is through a licensed real estate agent. This industry professional will have your best interests in mind when hunting for properties ? and help from a real estate agent can reduce the chance that you will wind up with a lemon. A real estate agent can help locateAtlanta Georgia Foreclosures by utilizing the full benefits of a Multiple Listing Service to pull up foreclosed properties. You can locate an agent who focuses on foreclosures through old-fashioned methods: ask around, make some calls, and drive through neighborhoods. Look for ?for sale? signs that say ?foreclosed,? ?bank-owned,? or ?bank repo? ? and call the agent listed on the sign. Even if you?re not interested in the property you?ve seen, contacting this person can be a great way to find foreclosures: the agent might have information about new foreclosures that have not yet been listed because bank management staffs are in the proc ess of approving listing prices on foreclosed properties.

You can also uncover available foreclosure properties through a variety of other means. One way is through bank websites. Many national banks, for example, include a list of bank-owned properties on their websites. Outside of banks, look to asset management companies for listings: these corporations are hired by lenders to handle foreclosures on properties owned by the lender. For more Atlanta Georgia Foreclosures you can also consider checking with government agencies (like HUD, Fannie Mae, the Department of the Treasury, and the Small Business Association) or a variety of auction houses. Another route is to use a web-based foreclosure company that provides lists of Atlanta Georgia Foreclosures for a subscription fee. These companies do all the work of searching and can possess a staggering amount of knowledge on a local level. Any of the above methods can be a great way to find available foreclosure properties ? but always remember that it?s smart to complete your fore closure purchase with the assistance of a qualified realtor who will have your best interests at heart.

Luke Winn: Wolters stepping into the spotlight, intrigues fans and NBA scouts

Nate Wolters scored 30 points against Alabama and is averaging almost 26 points a game this season.

Kelly Lambert/US PRESSWIRE

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The best players in college basketball are not all playing on the best teams, or in the biggest arenas, or on network or even cable television, or in front more than a handful of fans. On a weekend where there were high-profile hoops events at New York's Madison Square Garden and Brooklyn's Barclays Center, Nate Wolters and the Jackrabbits were playing 45 minutes outside the city, in a satellite tournament at Hofstra University on Saturday afternoon -- the closest this sport gets to an obscure-but-critically acclaimed indie show.

Among the few people in the gym 45 minutes before tipoff of South Dakota State-Marshall was an NBA scout, standing on the concourse, sizing up Wolters during warmups. "You've seen him before?" the scout asked. "What do you think? Is he better than Jimmer?"

Not better, I said. Different. Doesn't have Jimmer Range, or anything resembling Jimmer's jumper, but does a better job creating for others, figuring out ways to score from mid-range, and not turning the ball over. He's an actual point guard, too. Whether you like traditional stats -- 21.2 points, 5.9 assists, 5.1 rebounds as a junior while leading SDSU to its first NCAA tournament bid -- or advanced stats -- a 115.5 offensive rating while using a whopping 32.5 percent of his team's possessions -- Wolters looks quite good.

And yet, because he plays in Brookings, S.D., and the Summit League, because he was a fringe D-I recruit who considered playing D-II, because he's an unassuming white kid who scores like mad but doesn't play a ton of defense, because he shot just 24.1 percent from long-range last season, he remains, as another scout said, "a polarizing player". But 19 scouts from 15 different NBA teams were on the credential list. Some of them see Wolters as a second-rounder with a long-shot chance at the first; some see him as just a curiosity. They were all intrigued enough to show up.

As for the fans, well ... Nate Wolters and the Jackrabbits are not exactly a major draw in a neutral-court East Coast game. The fans could be counted in about a minute. There were exactly 60 in the stands, and one guy alone up in some kind of Hofstra athletic department luxury box. (The fans were outnumbered by scouts, media, ushers, coaches, managers, players and refs who totaled 88.) A brief fan-canvassing effort turned up varied interest in the visiting indie star.

Michael O'Brien, a 13-year-old from Marick, N.Y., wearing a Vince Carter throwback jersey, said he asked his dad to buy tickets after looking up Wolters online the previous night. "I've just heard he's NBA material," O'Brien said.

Andy Karlin, a longtime Hofstra season-ticket holder, was there with his wife, Marge. "I've never heard of the school or the team, or that kid before now," Andy said. Informed that Wolters was a sensation back in South Dakota, Marge said, "Oh, that's nice."

Shaquille Davis, a 19-year-old from Hempstead, was an actual Natehead. He showed up specifically to see Wolters. "Two years ago, my friend told me about him, but I didn't pay attention because I'm like, 'South Dakota State, where the hell is that?'" Davis said. "But then I saw his game against Washington last year -- he had 34 [points], he destroyed Terrence Ross and Tony Wroten, so I'm like, 'I have to pay more attention to this kid.' This was my chance to see him."

Davis watched Wolters' 2012-13 season-opener against Alabama (a narrow loss in which he had 30 points), and was hoping to see something similar. "He has the whole package. He's ready for the NBA," Davis said. "I want to see him go to work."

The game started, and Wolters uncharacteristically -- maybe because he was tired after losing to Hofstra the previous night -- didn't shoot for the first five minutes and 11 seconds. "If he's going to the NBA, he needs to shoot more," opined Tim Owens, a 48-year-old UPS driver from Patchogue, N.Y. "Also, I play in like, YMCA Leagues and LA Fitness leagues, and I don't think he could stop me."

Wolters scored his first points at the 12:26 mark and his first field goal at 11:49 to put the Jackrabbits up 13-12. His game does not really overwhelm you; it's an acquired taste that's a mix of change-of-pace dribbles in pick-and-rolls, crafty space-creating moves in isolation, slow-and-low released jumpers, and mid-range improvisation. A wrong-footed floater he hit in the lane with 2:56 left was particularly Wolters-ian, but he finished the half just 2-of-10 from the field, with nine points, four rebounds, four assists and no turnovers. Not mind-blowingly good, but still, quietly productive. They trailed 41-40 at the break.

Another Wolters-ian thing is that his stats sneak up on you. If the 60 people in the stands had been polled, I doubt many would have realized he finished the game with 22 points, 10 assists, six rebounds and just one turnover. It was a remarkably unassuming near-triple-double. His coach, Scott Nagy, didn't even realize it after the Jackrabbits pulled out a 78-77 win. He picked up a boxscore and said, "I felt like he had 10 points, and he had 22. He does that all the time. I'll think he didn't play well, and then I'll look and see a great line."

What everyone did remember was Wolters' passing. In the final 5:29, he had four assists as SDSU pulled off an improbable comeback, including from a five-point deficit with 20 seconds left. Wolters' penultimate assist was on the Brayden Carlson trey that cut Marshall's lead to two with 13 seconds left. Then came a moment where everyone expected Wolters -- who tends to dominate the ball late in the game and has fixed his long-range shot to the extent that he's made 61.5 percent of them thus far -- to pull up for the game-winner while trailing 77-75 with five seconds left.

Wolters was covered, somewhat, as he brought the ball up the floor, and so he chose to dish to a wide-open Chad White on the right wing. Nagy praised this decision. It was the right decision. Nonetheless, one NBA scout saw Wolters give up the ball on the final possession and joked, "He's LeBron!"

Even White, a reserve who had made one three earlier in the game, said "it was unexpected". He had seen Wolters make multiple game-winners last season and figured he might see another one on Saturday. White did -- but it was a game-winner of his own, a clutch three.

"I could have pulled up [to shoot]," Wolters said. "But I trusted Chad to make it. I like taking big shots, but I have to make the right play in those situations."

If he has a future in the NBA, it's as a playmaking/scoring point guard, one of those diamonds-in-the-rough like Jeremy Lin or Steve Nash, in the absolute best-case scenario. Wolters' decision-making is progressing; the 10:1 assist ratio against Marshall is solid evidence of that. His three-point shot, even if it has a low release, seems to be fixed after a summer of revamping his guide-hand position to move his thumb off the ball. A strong performance at the Adidas Nations camp in August, where he more than held his own in scrimmages against major-conference stars, upped his stock in scouts' eyes.

I asked Wolters if any major D-I teams, or their fans, had expressed regret they never offered him a scholarship out of St. Cloud, Minn., given that he could probably start for 99 percent of them now.

"A couple have, but in high school, I wasn't good enough at all," he said. "I wasn't even close. I was unathletic and didn't shoot the ball well, so they didn't even look at me. I didn't think I was at a high D-I level yet."

He is now, even if he doesn't have the swagger to say that he should be playing in front of thousands rather than dozens, and on TV rather than in front of the two video coordinators' cameras at Hofstra. But such is the life of the indie All-America candidate, even when he's averaging 25.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.0 assists thus far as a senior, and may go on to lead the nation in scoring.

Among the few things Wolters has to validate his cult-hero status is a fake Twitter account in his honor, Fake Nate Wolters, run by someone he's never met. It says the things that Nate won't, such as this Tweet from the start of the season:

Some people do the "little things" that don't show up in the stat book. Turns out the stuff in the stat book is important. I do those things.

Wild Meowzers: Alexis' Baby Shower

My brother Brandt's wife, Alexis is having a baby in January. We can't wait for Baby Kate to join our family. On Caleb's birthday we made a quick trip to Castle Dale to hang out with family for the afternoon and attend her baby shower. As sisters we often wondered who Brandt would marry and if she would be able to handle the four Peacock sisters. I am so happy that Alexis is in our family, she fits in perfectly and is a true sister. Not to mention she can handle Brandt, which is a pretty awesome task!

Little Brock has a funny habit of sucking in his lip like an old man. It made us laugh and laugh all afternoon.?He's going to have to keep up his antics if he wants to?continue to have all the?attention on him once Kate gets here!

My best girl holding my best baby-sitter's baby boy... Bethany, how did we/she/he get this old!?

Suu Kyi hopes India will stand by Myanmar in democracy struggle

Bombay News.Net Wednesday 14th November, 2012

Suu Kyi, on a six-day visit to India where she studied, her first visit to the country in a quarter century, met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and discussed the process of national reconciliation and democratisation in her country.

India has rolled out the red carpet for Myanmar's pro-democracy icon - part of diplomatic outreach to build across-the-spectrum linkages with the energy-rich Southeast Asian country which has embraced democratic reforms after decades of the all-powerful junta rule.

The talks between Manmohan Singh and Suu Kyi lasted for half-an-hour. "The two leaders also had one-on-one talks without aides," Syed Akbaruddin, spokesperson of the external affairs ministry, told reporters here.

In his interaction with Suu Kyi, the prime minister lauded her "indomitable courage" and her life-long struggle to bring democracy to her country during which she spent years under house arrest.

"Our good wishes are with you as indeed with your struggle for democracy. We admire you for the indomitable courage you have shown," the prime minister told Myanmar's opposition leader.

"The two discussed a variety of issues, including the national reconciliation process underway in Myanmar and the process of democratisation in this context. Prime Minister welcomed the progress made by Daw Suu Kyi and President Thien Sien," said sources.

There was a meeting of minds as both Manmohan Singh and Suu Kyi pitched for greater people-to-people relations and agreed to explore greater exchanges between parliaments and judiciary of the two countries.

This message about forging a people-driven relationship was later reinforced by Suu Kyi in her eloquent speech while delivering the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Lecture.

The speech was laced with nostalgia for youthful days she spent in a college in Delhi, fervent idealism that sustained her during years of oppression, and a guarded optimism on the way ahead.

She also obliquely critiqued India's drawing away from the democracy movement led by her in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but in the same breath hoped that India will now stand by and walk by the people of Burma in the last difficult phase ahead.

"I was saddened to see that we had drawn away from India, or rather that India had drawn away from us during our very difficult days, but I always had faith in the lasting friendship between our two countries based on lasting friendships between our two peoples," Suu Kyi said in a deeply moving speech.

"Governments come and go, and that's what democracy is all about, but people remain," she said.

In a realistic vein, Suu Kyi underlined that Myanmar had still not reached the goal of democracy and said that in "this last, I hope, and most difficult phase, India will stand by us and walk by us as we proceed on the path that they were able to proceed upon many years before us".

India had supported Suu Kyi in her fight against the military junta in the 1980s and early '90s, but rejigged its policy in the mid-90s, pursuing the path of pragmatism and realpolitick.

Two key factors that prompted India to revise its pro-democracy stance were the activities of rebels from northeastern states who established shelters on the India-Myanmar border and a marked increase in Chinese influence and investment in Myanmar.

Stating that her movement was rooted in the non-violence practised by Mahatma Gandhi, Suu Kyi said the influence of Nehru on her was less well known.

"Nehru's book 'The Discovery of India' written while he was in jail, was also a discovery of myself," said Suu Kyi, who is in India after a 25-year gap.

Suu Kyi studied at the Convent of Jesus and Mary School and graduated in political science from Lady Shri Ram College, one of Delhi's most reputed colleges for women, when her mother was Burma's envoy to India.

For some malls, you can get indoor walking directions to find the best route from one store to the next. The indoor maps are available for a number of popular retail locations including Nordstrom, Macy?s, Bloomingdale?s, Harrod?s, Selfridges, John Lewis and other retailers.

After launching social reviews on Google Shopping yesterday, the search giant is bring a few more features to the mix to help consumers shop more efficiently online. Now when searching for toys, you can see 360-degree photos of the products, which is meant to bring that in-store feeling of holding and touching a product to the online experience.

You simply click the ?3D? swivel icon on the product image to see the toy in 360-degree view, on HTML5 enabled browsers. You can also access Google?s holiday toy picks as well.
