Indy eyes NCAA football championship

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Playoffs are coming to major college football. And the decision, which became official Tuesday, spells opportunity for Indianapolis.

It's a big change that could mean big money and the national spotlight for the Circle City.

While the new playoff format will include only four teams, playing in the usual "college bowl" cities, the championship game will be bid out to any city that's interested.

Having just finished playing host to the Super Bowl, professional football's national championship, Indianapolis seems a natural to go after college football's big game. With its indoor facilities and a long history of handling big crowds for both pro and collegiate sports, even in the middle of winter, Indianapolis is sure to be among the top tier of cities in which to play the game.

"This kind of game would not have the kind of impact of the Super Bowl, but it will be very close," said Matt Will, an associate professor of finance at the University of Indianapolis.

Will said the potential payoff of hosting a college football championship is huge for Indianapolis.

"It's outside dollars. You know, that's the key here. These are outside dollars, big money too. The people that like their college teams, they'll spare no expense to see them play," he said.

Moving forward would require a green light from the Indiana Sports Corp., which spearheaded the city's successful bid to host the Super Bowl. But it all starts with the mayor.

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard is in Germany, but a spokesperson for him told 24-Hour News 8: "The city is capable of hosting it. It's interested if it makes sense. Everyone has to agree."

It may come down to cost. How much money will it take to win the bid?

"But the key is, it has a snowball effect. Because not only will you attract this one-time audience, you will now be on the consideration list for other events," Will said.

Which means the successful Super Bowl this past February may well put Indianapolis near the top of the list for hosting the 2015 College Football Championship.

While Indianapolis waits for the bid requirements before going full speed ahead, the competition is already under way. Thursday, the Houston Sports Authority announced it will not only go after the college championship game, but "agressively pursue this game." And late Friday, the Chik-Fil-A bowl people said they will work hard to bring the game to Atlanta.

Nowadays, exit signs can be found in many buildings and most of the people have understood their importance. Their importance is highly felt because they enable people to find their way to safely exit a building in the case of any emergency. However, some people are not aware of their working. A radioactive and gaseous element of hydrogen known as Tritium is stored in the glass tube inside each sign for illuminating them. This glass tube is contained in a block of plastic and when it breaks due to one reason or another, there are chances of gas in the signs to leak and they can stay for long enough in the air in such a way inhaling the gas cannot be avoided. Therefore, companies that are looking for safer alternatives can opt for photoluminescent egress signage.

Nowadays, manufacturers are offering some light that can glow in dark. Reason behind this is that these models are less expensive and they can last longer. Normal signs can last for a lifespan of eight to ten years, while glow in dark signs can last for 25 years thereby offering long-term solutions for companies that are looking for suitable models for installing in their offices. When this model is used, they need not frequently install new signs thereby saving some money. Since these models do not require any electrical wiring, they can further save some money to the users. Now, the question that might be arising in your mind would be how glow in dark signs work without electricity, the answer is that they actually operate by absorbing light from ambient light sources like fluorescent or halogen bulbs. Once the light is absorbed, they shine brightly when the surroundings are dark. Since they use neither electricity nor batteries, expenses to be made for battery replacement and for hiring a professional for replacement of batteries can be avoided thereby further saving some money to the businessmen.

Therefore, glow in dark signs can offer more benefits to the companies in the form cost saving and in the form of safety features. In addition, they are also environmental friendly and according to an estimation, it is found that when a company replaces 100 traditional signs with 100 glow in dark signs, it can prevent nearly half a million pounds of carbon dioxide from being released to the environment. Above all, electricity bill of the companies can also be greatly minimized. Nowadays, many dealers are offering different forms of exit signs for people to select from.

Planting Grass Seed, Strategies for Success, Quality Matters

While planting and growing grass is not difficult?I once heard that it could be planted on concrete?there are strategies for successfully planting grass seed to ensure?the most success. Listen to this audio podcast to hear the discussion about all these topics.

Perfect Lawn

When planting grass, you have several decisions to make:

When is the best time for planting grass seed?

Fall ? The best time for planting grass seed is fall. Early enough so it becomes established before the first frost bot not too early that the heat will hinder growth.

What variety to seed to plant?

Plant what grows best for your part of the country and the site conditions. Your local seed supplier will carry what you need. Companies like Pennington Seed ship different?varieties?to different parts of the country.

What brand of seed to plant?

Yes, brand does matter. You want a quality seed that will have a deep root system and look nice.

Do grass mixtures matter when?planting grass seed?

Yes, a blend of?varieties?will offer multiple benefits. Some grasses?take?a long time to germinate, others germinate quickly. Some spread and?some?are bunch grasses. Using a blend when?planting grass seed gives you?benefits?of multiple varieties.

How much fertilizer do you need?

As little as possible. Deep roots from quality seed will lower the need for?fertilizers.

How often to water when?planting grass seed?

As needed, follow the instructions for the variety you plant and keep well watered until the grass seed is established.

Engineering the best grass

Handyguy Brian discussed some of the things he learned about Pennington Grass. He visited Pennington?s R&D facility in Oregon earlier this year and has some interesting insight into seed varieties.

Pennington? Smart Seed? Hands-On Experiment

At Pennington?s ?Seed for Yourself? Summit, Handyguy Brian was given the opportunity to try?planting grass seed in?a small plot using Pennington? Smart Seed? to learn about the benefits of using a high-quality, pure seed product. Seed products are most appropriate for use when planting grass seed for?a new lawn or re-seeding large areas.

Every bag of Pennington? Smart Seed? contains pure seed and no filler. The seed varieties used in Pennington? Smart Seed? are some of the most advanced varieties available and have been developed for their drought tolerance. At least 60 percent of the seed in every bag of Pennington? Smart Seed? has been qualified by the Turfgrass Water Conservation Alliance (TWCA) for its drought tolerance. Pennington Seed is one of the three founding members of the TWCA, which works with state university systems and private research enterprises to develop turfgrasses that use less water.

In addition to using only the most advanced varieties, each seed is further enhanced with Pennington?s exclusive MYCO Advantage? seed technology, which helps to introduce beneficial micro-organisms that attach themselves to the emerging seed roots for a denser, deeper root system.

After minimal soil tilling, Brian evenly spread fertilizer and Pennington? Smart Seed? across his plots. Over the next several weeks, each plot received regular watering as appropriate.*

DAY 1

The plot after initial seeding.

*Watering requirements can vary dramatically between germination, establishment and ongoing maintenance. During germination, homeowners should water to keep the soil moist. Following the first two weeks, homeowners should then water their lawn every third day for 15-20 minutes until established. As part of ongoing maintenance, watering should occur every fourth day for 20-30 minutes. At this stage, the main goal is to maintain a healthy lawn. This can be primarily accomplished by monitoring for color changes. A lawn does not need water until the color falls by 50 percent, at which time one inch of water should be added. To determine the length of irrigation, place plastic cups or small tins to observe waterfall in a given area.

?DAY 14 AND DAY 28

DAY 14 AND DAY 28

During the first days of?planting grass seed , the seed absorbs water but has not swelled to the point of bursting open. Depending on the variety of grass, germination is not typically visible until at least 8 days, with some varieties taking well over 14 days.

At 14 days, germination is visible with a number of seeds having sprouted. Germination progresses over the next few weeks.

DAY 35 AND DAY 49

DAY 35 AND DAY 49

Through day 35-49, the grass continues to thicken across the seeded area. While full establishment for Pennington? Smart Seed? takes longer than Pennington? 1-Step Complete?, the grass grows beautiful and thick.

Pennington offers specialized variety blends or mixes of Pennington? Smart Seed?. Pennington? Smart Seed? comes in both traditional variety blends/mixes (Perennial Ryegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Tall Fescue and Fescue/Bluegrass), as well as specialized mixes that are customized to specific regional climates ? taking the guesswork out of selection. Varieties include: Sun & Shade, Dense Shade, Northeast, Midwest, Pacific Northwest and Pennsylvania State.

Roseanne is getting roasted on Comedy Central

By Erin Carlson, The Hollywood Reporter

Comedienne Roseanne Barr is getting roasted in August.

She can dish it out, but can she take it??We'll find out this August, when?Roseanne Barr?gets roasted on Comedy Central, which has tapped the famously unfiltered comedian and actress as its next celebrity roastee.

"All I can say is good luck finding anything about me to make fun of ... I mean, I've never made a mistake or offended anyone in my life!" she said Monday in a statement.

More from THR: Roseanne Barr courts Willie Nelson for vice president

Comedy Central's "Roast of Roseanne"?will be taped in Los Angeles on Aug. 4, and the episode will debut Aug. 12 at 10 p.m. ET.

"Although Roseanne appears to be a demure, soft spoken woman eternally committed to the status quo, we believe under the surface is an explosive, trail-blazing cultural revolution. We are honored to Roast her,? said?Kent Alterman, Comedy Central's head of original programming and production.

?Celebrating Roseanne?s unprecedented achievements in comedy and television will surely inspire us to make this Roast more reminiscent of the classic roasts, where the intimacy of friends jousting with each other came through," he added in a statement.

Past Comedy Central roastees include?Donald Trump,?Charlie Sheen?and?Pamela Anderson.

THR video: Emmys 2012: TV's funniest ladies talk farts, fame and Twitter fury

Barr, 59, created and starred in the groundbreaking sitcom "Roseanne," spotlighting a middle-class, blue-collar family in middle America alongside fellow actors?John Goodman?and?Laurie Metcalfe. She won Emmy and Golden Globe awards for her role on the show in between courting controversy for her off-set antics, such as spitting and grabbing her crotch while singing "The Star-Spangled Banner" at a baseball game in 1990.

After "Roseanne," she briefly fronted in an eponymous talk show and a reality series dubbed "Roseanne's Nuts." Earlier this year, she announced she was vying for the Green party's nomination for President, with?Willie Nelson?on her short list for Vice President.

Amazon Studios adds first four original shows to its 'development slate'

Amazon Studios pulls back the curtain on first four original productions

Back in May, Amazon put a call out for budding screenwriters to submit their ideas for an original comedy or children's series. Now, four of the submissions have been marked up on the Amazon Series Development Slate, with more being added to a "consider" list. The chosen projects comprise three comedies, and one preschooler's show. By getting the Amazonian thumbs-up, the ideas receive $10,000 to extend the initial option, assistance to develop the script, and potentially a pilot episode. So, we might not be seeing them on our screens / displays just yet, but we're sure we're not the only ones paying close attention.

The Longform Guide to Mayhem in Mexico

?Against all this, Riodoce stands out?a small paper, in the hometown of Mexico?s most powerful cartel, that insists on writing about the drug violence. There are other places, online and in print, where Mexican readers can go to find body counts or pictures of blood-spattered crime scenes, but Riodoce prides itself on its investigative work, on trying to ferret out the stories that neither the cartels nor the government want told. As news outlets all over the country have censored themselves in the face of lethal ultimatums, Riodoce?s reputation has grown. Today it?s read far beyond Culiac?n, by cartel analysts, government officials, fellow journalists, and drug traffickers themselves. Last year one of the paper?s columnists and co-founders, Javier Valdez, won the Committee to Protect Journalists? International Press Freedom Award, along with journalists from Pakistan, Belarus, and Bahrain.

With Vladimir Putin watching, Fedor Emelianenko knocks out Pedro Rizzo

MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko notched another win in St. Petersburg, Russia, knocking out former UFC heavyweight contender Pedro Rizzo in the first round. With Russian president Vladimir Putin looking on, Emelianenko leveled Rizzo with a right hand then followed him to the ground to stop the fight.

Emelianenko now has three wins in a row after losing to Fabricio Werdum, Antonio Silva and Dan Henderson in Strikeforce. Before that, he was an unstoppable force, racking up 31 wins, one loss and one no contest.

Before this bout, Emelianenko told Russian television this fight would be his last, but he did not talk about retirement in his post-bout interview. It remains to be seen if "The Last Emperor" is truly done with MMA.

Article-State Farm Insurance ? Shawn Mason | Baltimore Share

car insurance galesburg il There are more cars and drivers hitting the road every year. With so many vehicles on the road, accidents will happen. Automobile insurance can be the difference between a small setback and a major hassle. How can you decide what insurance you require and how to buy it? Coverage requirements vary by state/province but usually include the following: It pays for damages due to bodily injury and property damage to others for which you are responsible. Bodily injury damages include medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering. Property damage includes damaged property and loss of use of property. If you are sued, it also pays your defense and court costs. Higher recommended insurances are available that cover more than the lower, state-mandated insurance. Personal injury protection: This is required in some states and is optional in others. It pays you or your passengers for medical treatment resulting from a crash, regardless of who may have been at fault, and is often called no-fault coverage. It may also cover lost earnings, replacement of services and funeral expenses. The minimum amount of this insurance is typically set by the state. Medical payments: This type of coverage is available in non-no-fault states and will pay no matter who is responsible for the accident. It pays for an insured person?s reasonable and necessary medical and funeral expenses for bodily injury from an accident. Collision: This pays for damage to your car caused by an accident. Comprehensive: Applies if your car is stolen or damaged by causes other than collision, including fire, wind, hail, flood or vandalism. Uninsured motorist: This pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have liability insurance or by a person who cannot be identified (usually a hit-and-run driver). Under-insured motorist: This pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have enough liability insurance to cover the full amount of the damages. Other coverages, like car rental and emergency road service, are also available.Your auto insurance payments vary by company and will depend on several factors, including: * What coverage you select * The make and model of the car you drive * Your driving record * Your age, gender and marital status and * Where you live Some have come to think of auto insurance as a necessary evil, but it can truly rescue your economic health Evaluate your needs, research your options and with the help of your insurance agent make the decision that best suits you. truck insurance

iFixit tears down the new MacBook Pro's Retina display, finds a minor marvel of engineering

We've already seen them go to town on the body of the MacBook Pro with Retina display, but the staffers at iFixit have seen fit to disassemble the 2880 x 1800 panel at the heart of the new beast. As they've since found out, it takes no less than a rethink of LCD construction to make that kind of resolution work in a laptop screen that's thinner than its ancestor. The unibody aluminum casing acts as the frame for the display, and the LCD becomes its own front glass; even the wireless antennas are threaded through the hinges to eke out that last drop of space. Combined, Apple's part layouts do make repair near-impossible -- the teardown gurus at iFixit ended up cracking the glass despite their knowledge. The team is nonetheless a little more forgiving on the lack of repairability here than with the computer underneath, noting that something had to give for Apple to have its high-resolution cake and eat it too. That just won't be much of a consolation if your MacBook Pro faceplants and requires a whole LCD swap.

(AP) ? Aung San Suu Kyi and Bono joined forces Monday as the Myanmar democracy activist's European tour moved from the home of the Nobel Peace Prize to the land of U2.

The pair spent more than an hour answering questions at an Oslo conference of peace mediators at the end of Suu Kyi's four-day visit to Norway. Then they jetted together to the Irish capital, Dublin, for an evening concert in her honor.

Irish Foreign Minister Eamon Gilmore and a trio of children, two of them Burmese nationals, offered Suu Kyi flowers as she arrived at Dublin Airport. After meeting Irish President Michael D. Higgins, she arrived at a riverside theater to thunderous cheers and applause, with Bono and Nobel laureate poet Seamus Heaney walking alongside her down the red carpet.

Inside, Amnesty International organized a three-hour show of songs, poems and speeches in her honor featuring top Irish stars, and set against a backdrop of a wall of opened birdcages symbolizing her freedom from house arrest in 2010.

The Riverdance troupe got proceedings off to a foot-stomping start. Folk guitarist Donal Lunny led the audience in a soft musical chant of Aung San Suu Kyi's name lasting several minutes. Irish actress Saoirse Ronan read a poem, followed by English actress Vanessa Redgrave reading one of Heaney's, "The Republic of Conscience." Dublin folk rocker Damien Rice sang his hit "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" to a spare cello accompaniment.

Redgrave and Bono then presented Suu Kyi with another of her long-postponed awards, Amnesty's Ambassador of Conscience. Bono had announced the award at a Dublin U2 concert in 2009 during a worldwide concert tour that highlighted demands for her freedom.

"Everybody's here to sing for you tonight, but it's your song that everybody wants to hear," Bono said as he invited Suu Kyi on to the stage to a two-minute standing ovation.

"This has come as a surprise to me, and a very moving one," said Suu Kyi, who got laughs by observing that the British used to consider the Burmese "the Irish of the east" ? because they never gave the British any peace, both liked a drink and were very superstitious.

Bono, who also wrote the 2000 hit "Walk On" in praise of Suu Kyi's long exile from her family, had never met her before. He admitted, during his first news conference alongside Suu Kyi in Oslo, that he found her a wee bit intimidating.

"I'm star-struck ... but I'm managing to get over it," said the 52-year-old Bono, who donned his trademark yellow-tinted wraparound glasses and high-heeled boots.

Suu Kyi, in turn, said Bono had hit the right note with "Walk On," which was written from the point of view of her husband Michael Aris. Myanmar's military rulers refused to let him see his wife from 1995 to his death from cancer in 1999.

"I like that song, because it's very close to how I feel, that it's up to you to carry on," said Suu Kyi, who turns 67 on Tuesday. "It's good if you have supporters, it's good if you have people who are sympathetic and understanding. But in the end, it's your own two legs that have to carry you on."

Following the Dublin concert at an outdoor rally, Suu Kyi is to sign the roll of honor proclaiming her a Freewoman of the City of Dublin, an honorific title bestowed in her absence in 1999.

Amnesty officials also plan to give her a birthday cake and lead the crowd in a chorus of "Harry Birthday."

Bono said Suu Kyi was exceptionally philosophical and spiritual for a politician. And he expressed admiration over how she had stuck to a position of nonviolence throughout her 15 years in detention.

"It's really her nonviolent position that I find so impressive because perhaps I find it hard to fathom," he said, adding: "I think she will be remembered for that kind of spiritual insight really, as much as the sort of nitty-gritty of her politics, because she's a tough customer, too."

Suu Kyi spent much of her final hours in Oslo focused on that nitty-gritty: the challenge of coaxing Myanmar's military-controlled government toward democracy without alienating militants from warring ethnic groups who demand immediate change.

Her party, the National League for Democracy, won elections in 1990 only to see the result annulled. It boycotted the next elections in 2010, and today has just entered Myanmar's legislature as a small opposition force.

Ireland's foreign minister, Gilmore, said he hoped "that the recent positive developments in Burma, including Ms. Suu Kyi's election, herald the real beginning of a new era of peace, democracy and human rights."

But Suu Kyi noted that any changes to the country's laws of government would require more than 75 percent support in the legislature ? and army members represent a blocking 25 percent of votes.

"We will need at least one army representative to vote for amendments. So we have to work with the army. ... We don't want to be in conflict with them, we want to achieve a consensus," Suu Kyi said in response to a question from The Associated Press.

Earlier, she told the audience of international conflict mediators that building unity among Myanmar's many warring ethnic groups meant she must remain open to talking with those still committed to violence.

Suu Kyi said she wouldn't "disinherit or disown" militant groups based along Myanmar's borders in Thailand and Bangladesh "because we share the same goals" of creating a proper democracy that respects minority rights in Myanmar. Nor, she said, could she promise them that such goals could be achieved without violent rebellion ? but they had both a moral and practical obligation to try.

She said her National League for Democracy could "not let go of our conviction that change could be brought about through peaceful means, and in the long run that would be better.

"The wounds that are opened up by violent conflict take a long time to heal," she said. "And while the peaceful way might take longer, in the end there are fewer wounds to be healed."

Many thousands cheer Suu Kyi in Norway fjord town

Aung San Suu Kyi received another hero's welcome as many thousands cheered the Myanmar democracy icon on Sunday in a Norwegian fjord town that has a long connection with her freedom struggle.

The Rafto Foundation, based in Bergen, gave Suu Kyi her first international award 22 years ago, when she was under house arrest in the country also known as Burma, then ruled by a military junta that only recently eased its iron grip.

Following rapid change in Myanmar over the past year under a quasi-civilian government, Suu Kyi is now on a five-nation European tour, which finally allowed her to deliver her 1991 Nobel Peace Prize speech in Oslo on Saturday.

On Sunday in Bergen, the Oxford-educated daughter of Burma's assassinated independence hero was again feted by thousands who packed out a square in the mountain-ringed port city known as the Gateway to the Norwegian Fjords.

"My journey to Bergen began a long time ago when man first started to realise that all of us were born to live with human dignity," Suu Kyi, wearing a golden silk scarf and flowers in her hair, told the enthusiastic audience.

"We don't have to see the end of the road, far away, in one instant," she said of her country's ongoing transformation. "We just have to see the right way to get there. And we in Burma are trying to reach our goal."

She praised Norway for its history of tolerance, mutual respect and multiculturalism, and thanked its people for providing "such a warm sanctuary for people so different from you", including many Myanmar refugees.

"Norway is a cold land -- I can't deny it," she said. "But you have warmed it for me with your affection, your generosity and, actually, what I think of as your gaiety, in spite of the weather," she said, to laughs from the crowd.

To achieve a harmonious society in Myanmar, where the government has agreed ceasefires with many ethnic rebel groups, she said, "we must learn to live together, to work together, to trust one another, and to respect one another."

It was a message Suu Kyi also stressed in a meeting with hundreds of Myanmar exiles from different ethnic groups, including Burmese, Karen, Mon, Kachin and Chin, urging them to stay united, whatever their background.

"We have to make a plan for our children, for the future of our children," she said in Burmese, according to a translator, also urging parents to use online resources to teach their children about their ancestral home.

She touched on recent deadly communal clashes between majority Buddhists and the Muslim Rohingya minority, saying "we really have to calm it down. We have to avoid saying and doing things that'll make the problem worse."

"I never dreamt Aung San Suu Kyi would come to Norway," said one admirer, Lwan Moe Anickson, 28, an ethnic Karen who was born in a refugee camp on the Thai border and arrived in Norway five years ago.

"She is working for equality for all the ethnic groups of Burma."

Earlier in Bergen, Suu Kyi met representatives of non-government groups and universities at the Rafto Foundation to discuss ways to support development in her impoverished country as it reopens to the world.

Talks focused on the need to improve education, modernise the public sector and create jobs, and on how to equitably harness resources, especially oil and gas, said Jan Ramstad, chair of the Egil Rafto House Foundation.

In Norway, a big oil producer, "we have created a huge oil fund for the Norwegians so we can have sustainable development in the future, and that's also a good model for Burma," he told AFP after the closed meeting.

Myanmar's political reforms have led the United States, the European Union and others to roll back or suspend long-standing sanctions.

Some now fear a free-for-all business bonanza, and Suu Kyi herself has stressed that ethical, transparent and "human-rights friendly, democracy-friendly investment is what we're looking for".

As Myanmar opens up, it faces key choices, said Ramstad, a trained economist with experience in post-Soviet Eastern Europe and Russia.

"If it's done the right way, it's a unique chance for positive change," he said. "If it's done the wrong way, it could be a disaster."

Like the crowds outside, Ramstad voiced his admiration for Suu Kyi: "She's amazing. She's my hero. She is so focused. She has such self-control. She is so influenced by Buddhism and Gandhi. She is totally dedicated to her people."

England eliminates Sweden

Man of the Match: In the first half, Karim Benzema was just like the rest of his teammates: Better than Monday but still not good enough in the final third. That changed in the second half, when Benzema assisted on each of France?s goals. On the first, Benzema took a ball from the left and quickly switched it to the right, giving Jeremy Menez the change to come onto his left foot for the opening goal. On the second, Benzema dropped back to take a ball 30 yards out then turned and delivered a cutting pass to Yoann Cabaye, who?d jumped into the box. From there, it was an easy finish.

NBC Sports: France beats co-host Ukraine 2-0 in Group D

Packaged for takeaway:

  • Players were pulled off the pitch in the fifth minute as thunder cracked around the Donbass Arena. Cameras showed lightning streaming above the venue as rain dropped, collecting in streams that flowed down the concrete aisles.
  • It was 55 minutes before the game restarted, and credit to whomever designed the field, the huge puddles that had collected during the hour?s downtime had dissipated. On the field, the match was not effected by the storm.
  • Laurent Blanc made two changes to his team (before the game; not after the break). Gael Clichy came in at left back for Patrice Evra while Jeremy Menez started in place of Florent Malouda. The latter change pushed Samir Nasri to the middle and France to a 4-2-3-1 (from a 4-3-3). Because the game was played so differently than Monday?s with England, it?s hard to say if the change in formation mattered.
  • The change in personnel certainly did. Not only did Clichy avoid the silly error Evra made on England?s goal, but Menez was France?s first scorer. A second half counter played from Franck Ribery through Benzema to Menez allowed the PSG attacker to cut in, turning left back Yevhen Selin. His shot from 16 yards nestled inside the right post for the opening goal.
  • To that point, the second half had been an open affair (after a first 45 that saw only one chance for each team). Ukraine had been hitting France on the counter and generated two very good chances before the French broke through.
  • Through that first half, though, you got the feeling Ukraine might be walking on eggshells. Their defense played very well ? all four defenders putting in strong halves ? but there was a danger. If there was any let up in the second half, France would break through. Were those performances sustainable? On the first goal, there wasn?t a let up as much as the defense was hung out to dry a bit, with France executing a great counter-counter attack. Of course that counter attack started through the defense?e right while Oleh Gusev was caught up field.
  • Minutes after breaking through, France put it away, with Yoann Cabaye?s goal capping a night of increased activity for the Newcastle midfielder. Against England, with the Three Lions so packed in, he didn?t have chances to jump into anything but a sea of white. On Friday, as play built on the right, he found a chance to jump into the left of the area, and Benzema found him.
  • Ukraine?s wide play that was so good against Sweden (and deemed so important before the match) was a let down. France didn?t do anything special to stop it. It was just an execution issue. Andriy Yarmolenko and Yevhen Konoplyanka had plenty of touches and had their opportunities to take on French defenders. They just didn?t deliver.
  • Part of the problem may have been Sergey Nazarenko. So good pushing the ball wide versus Sweden, the veteran midfielder did not have a good game. He was the team?s first sub.
  • France now moves top of the group ahead of their Tuesday match with Sweden. England can join them later today, if the Three Lions beat the Swedes.
  • For Ukraine, it?s a disappointing result ? a fall back to Earth ? but they?re far from done. If they beat England on Tuesday, they?re through to the quarterfinals.
