Funds for the Whole Family: Getting Kids Involved in Precious ...

Post image for Funds for the Whole Family: Getting Kids Involved in Precious Metals Investing

When you?re passionate about investing in precious metals, it?s natural to want to share your enthusiasm with your family. But this investment strategy can be complicated when you want to teach your children?how do you explain backwardation to your 12-year-old? Or explain your interest in survival silver without giving your 5-year-old nightmares?

Here are a few strategies to get your kids on the path to sound investments by teaching them to invest in gold, silver and other metals. Keep in mind that not all strategies are appropriate for all ages, so pick and choose based on what is right for your household.

Relate to Their Interests

Demonstrate the value of gold and silver by pointing them out when they pop up in TV shows, books, or movies they enjoy. For example, in Harry Potter?s wizarding world, all transactions are completed with gold, silver and bronze coins called Galleons, Sickles and Knuts, respectively.

Other kid-friendly media that mentions precious metals include the book Treasure Island, the Disney movie Robin Hood, and even the cartoon character on their Lucky Charms cereal. Use these and other stories to start a conversation with your son or daughter: Why are those metals desirable?

Take a Field Trip to a Coin Show

For a great weekend activity, take your children with you to a coin show. Whether you?re interested in numismatic or investment coins, this will demonstrate how many people are interested in precious metals. A show can offer a wide range of products, and you can take time to point out what makes each item valuable or interesting: is it the type of metal alone or does that coin have a particular trait that adds value?

Explain Inflation with Their Grandparents

Even if their grandparents aren?t able to help with this lesson directly, you and your kids can look up the prices of common objects when their grandparents were about their age. For example, they will probably be shocked to learn that a Coca-Cola in 1950 cost only 5 cents?today they need several quarters to get the same thing!

Using concrete examples and familiar people can help bring the difficult concept of inflation down to a very basic level. Then you can also explain that precious metals don?t change over time in the same way as a soda, and that?s why it?s such a good idea to buy them.

Check the Library

On your next trip to the library, look up some age-appropriate books to enjoy together. Your library should have some that explain coin collecting or the ?how tos? of mining. Your youngster may enjoy a book about the trucks used in mining, while your older teen can pick up some of the nuances of investing.

Add on to School Lessons

Make your collection educational: when your student is learning the names of all the states, bring out your 50 State Quarter collection and talk about the symbols on each. You can also use the quarters as representations of each state, and encourage them to be put out in order of when they joined the union.

Look for other ways to add on to school lessons. Your Austrian Philharmonic collection can be part of WWI history or music class, and coins featuring animals like the Australian Kangaroo can be part of biology.

Teach Money Management

You should also integrate your coin stack into conversations about how to manage money. Whether you dispense a weekly allowance or kids only spend their birthday money, it?s important to explain how money should be spent. In addition to modeling good behavior, this is your opportunity to explain the concept of ?saving for a rainy day.? In addition to teaching deferred spending, this is a great opportunity to offer your kids a way to invest in silver or gold and teach long-term saving.

Pick Up Kid-Friendly Designs

You can enrich your child?s interest in bullion and coin collecting by offering designs they?ll love. American Silver Eagles are beautiful and valuable, but your son may be more interested in a Boy Scout Centennial proof. Kid-friendly designs abound, including Girl Scout and baseball coins released by the U.S. Mint, Zombucks Walkers (and eventually, nine other designs) by Provident Metals, and animal-themed coins from the Perth Mint Lunar Series. These designed rounds may be a great ?gateway? into your preferred investments.

Talk About Your Stack

The biggest thing you can do is to include your kids. They?ll sense your excitement when you get a new order, and you can take a moment to explain the types of bullion and why you are interested in this particular piece. You can demonstrate the proper way to care for your stack and stress the importance of security.

Your kids will love the chance to spend time with you sharing a hobby you both enjoy. When you make precious metals investing a family activity, you are truly setting your family up for a fantastic future.

What are your thoughts?

Do you think precious metals can be a great learning tool?

If so, how do you incorporate subject matter and history lessons when showing off your collection?

Scientists surprised to find red spruce thriving, now looking for cause of historic growth rate

BURLINGTON, Vt., August 30, 2013 In the 1970s, red spruce was the forest equivalent of a canary in the coal mine, signaling that acid rain was damaging forests and that some species, especially red spruce, were particularly sensitive to this human induced damage. In the course of studying the lingering effects of acid rain and whether trees stored less carbon as a result of winter injury, U.S. Forest Service and University of Vermont scientists came up with a surprising result three decades later, the canary is feeling much better.

Decline in red spruce has been attributed to damage that trees sustain in winter, when foliage predisposed to injury by exposure to acid rain experiences freezing injury and dies. Paul Schaberg, a research plant physiologist with the U.S. Forest Service's Northern Research Station in Burlington, Vt., and partners studied red spruce trees in Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. They found that the influence of a single damaging winter injury event in 2003 continued to slow tree growth in New England for 3 years, longer than had been expected, and had a significant impact on carbon storage.

They also found something they did not expect.

"The shocking thing is that these trees are doing remarkably well now," said Schaberg, a co-author on the study. Researchers found that diameter growth is now the highest ever recorded for red spruce, indicating that it is now growing at levels almost two times the average for the last 100 years, a growth rate never before achieved by the trees examined. "It raises the question 'why?'" Schaberg said.

The theories that Schaberg and his colleagues are eager to test include whether the red spruce turn-around can be credited to reductions in pollution made possible by the Clean Air Act of 1990, which helped reduce sulfur and nitrogen pollution. Another possibility is that red spruce may be one of nature's winners in the face of climate change. For red spruce, warmer winters mean less damage to foliage, which limits growth. Questions for future research also include whether the historic growth rate will continue or whether it will plateau.

The rebound in red spruce growth is described in a study co-authored by Schaberg with Alexandra Kosiba, Gary Hawley and Christopher Hansen, all from the University of Vermont. The study, "Quantifying the legacy of foliar winter injury on woody aboveground carbon sequestration of red spruce trees," was published earlier this year in the journal Forest Ecology and Management and is available online at: http://www.nrs.fs.fed.us/pubs/43459.

"Forest Service science was at the forefront in identifying acid rain and its impacts, and it is enormously gratifying to be at the forefront of discovering this amazing turn-around in red spruce growth in New England," said Michael T. Rains, Director of the Northern Research Station and the Forest Product Laboratory. "Whether this is a success story for pollution control or a developing story about the effects of a changing climate, we are not yet sure."

In addition to finding the surprising rebound in red spruce growth, Schaberg and his colleagues also answered the question they set out to answer how did the foliar damage associated with the 2003 winter injury affect carbon storage? They found that the winter injury event reduced the growth of red spruce trees for at least 3 years and resulted in cumulative reductions across the landscape equivalent to the carbon produced by burning 280 million gallons of gasoline.

Historically, red spruce has been an important timber species in the United States. While it remains a major commercial species in Canada, in the United States acid rain and land use changes have resulted in the loss of many red spruce trees.

ASUS teases new Transformer Pad coming September 4th, confirms it definitely has bezel

As IFA starts to slowly edge its way over the horizon, the product teasers start to rain. We've already seen hints from Sony, an outright admission from Samsung, and speculation from HTC. The latest tidbit, comes via ASUS's Facebook, which suggests it plans to show a new tablet at the event. What can we say about it? Well, odds on it's another Transformer Pad, running Android, and if you're into numerology (and consistency), Tegra 4 inside. Coincidentally, an unknown ASUS tablet (pictured after the break) with model number K00C popped up at the FCC last week, revealing little more than the usual WiFi and Bluetooth radios, and a display somewhere around 10-inches. Though the description of it as a Transformer Pad could indicate that whatever its exact configuration, it's arrival in the US won't be that far out.

Apple to hold off on next-gen iPad announcement for September 10th media event, more likely to announce new iPhones

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Source: www.powerpage.org --- Thursday, August 29, 2013
You might have to wait a bit longer for that next-gen IPad you?ve been hankering for. Per The Loop , there will be ?no iPads? at Apple?s upcoming September 10th media event. The keynote is expected to feature Apple?s next-generation iPhones, rumored to be called the ?iPhone 5S? and ?iPhone 5C.? The mighty Jim Dalrymple?s comments were provided in response to an earlier media report that had suggested iPads could be introduced at Apple?s Sept. 10 media event. However, Apple has historically kept its iPhone and IPad announcements separate. Last year, the iPhone 5 was unveiled at a media event in September, while the IPad mini and fourth-generation IPad were introduced to the public in October. It?s likely that Apple will follow a similar schedule this year, and introduce a second-generation IPad mini and redesigned fifth-generation IPad in October, ahead of the holiday shopping season.Jim Dalrymple?s comments assure that there won?t be iPads at Apple?s iPhone-centric Sept. 10 event, but new MacBook Pros with Haswell processors remain a possibility. The new fifth-generation IPad is expected to feature many of the same design elements as the current IPad mini, including smaller size bezels, a thinner body, and lighter weight. Parts claimed to be for the ?IPad 5? have appeared regularly throughout 2013. As for the IPad mini, it?s expected that Apple?s second-generation 7.9-inch tablet will see an upgraded high-resolution Retina displa ...

Researchers debate whether hormones or calories play a bigger role in obesity

It sounds like an oxymoron but low-fat yogurt may be more fattening than you think?at least for some people under some conditions. That is just one of the counterintuitive ideas behind new research to study the effects of a physiological condition known as insulin resistance in driving weight gain and obesity. Depending on what investigators find, some pretty conventional beliefs about what ultimately is fueling the current global epidemic of obesity?calories or carbohydrates?may need a bit of readjusting.

The scientific project is the brainchild of journalist Gary Taubes and former surgeon Peter Attia. Together they have founded a nonprofit organization called the Nutrition Science Initiative (NuSI), which has raised $40 million to test their hypothesis in the most rigorous manner possible. In essence, they contend that easily digested carbohydrates?such as the sugars that are added to low-fat yogurt to replace the fat that has been removed?drive weight gain by promoting insulin resistance. This hormonal change, in turn, signals the body to convert more sugar into fat and to hold on to more of the fat found in food rather than just letting these ingredients be excreted in the stool or converted into something else?like cholesterol or heat.

Independent investigators will monitor a number of overweight and obese volunteers who are fed various combinations of low-fat or low-carb diets for the effects on their bodies. In order to leave as little as possible to chance, the volunteers will have to live at a research facility during the experiment.

Taubes expects that NuSi may have preliminary results sometime within the next year or so. He has outlined the details of his new experiment in the September issue of Scientific American. Taubes also appears in an hour-long video from 2012 (see below) in which he debates the general concepts with Christopher Gardner, a nutrition professor at Stanford Medical School.

UNLV +14 1.1* free play
This is an interesting game because the temperature all week has been in the low 90?s in the area and Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill already said they would go deep with their players because of that. For me that means he?s not going to try to blow this game open as their are plenty of other games upcoming that are much more important. Minnesota wants to play smash mouth football and run the ball anyway which should slow the game down and I see no reason why Kill will try to run up the score on UNLV and I don?t think they can anyway. This game was a 3 OT win by Minnesota 30-27 last year in the desert and UNLV returns 18 starters from that team and should only be better.

Minnesota also has some weakness as they are weak on the outside and will struggle vs. quicker more athletic teams. Well UNLV has that recipe with Tim Cornett who averaged 5.1 ypc a season ago and they also have a running back in Adonis Smith who transfered from Northwestern that can also get on the edges and make big plays. UNLV?s defense will has enough experience back to make a couple of key red zone stops to stay in this game.

Rogers Canada Discounts Moto X to $170, Verizon U.S. Starts Selling It for $200

moto_xA lot of folks got kind of pissed at Motorola for giving Rogers exclusivity over the Moto X in Canada, but it appears that wasn?t such a bad idea after all. The country?s most popular wireless carrier, with close to 10 million subscribers as of a couple of months back, has decided not only to not abuse its power, but to make an unexpected act of kindness and already slash X?s price.

True, we?re not exactly dealing with a life-altering discount here, as the Moto X has gone down from $199.99 to $169.99 with two-year pacts, but free money is free money. Meanwhile, you can still get the 4.7-incher for $549.99 sans contractual obligations, which continues to be a little on the expensive side of things.

As for the variants of the phone available up North, I?m afraid you?ll have to make do with just the traditional ?Woven Black? and ?Woven White? models for now, although the customizable Moto Maker tool should make its way to Rogers before long.

Stateside, the X has been with us for about a week courtesy of AT&T, with Verizon following suit mere hours ago. Unfortunately, Big Red will probably not budge on pricing anytime soon, so expect to be asked to pay $200 with 24-month contracts for the white and black Moto X for at least one month or so. T-Mobile, Sprint, your move.

Nobel-winning Irish poet Seamus Heaney dies at 74

DUBLIN (AP) ? To all lovers of the perfectly weighed word, Seamus Heaney offered hope on this side of the grave.

Heaney, 74, died Friday in a Dublin hospital some 18 years after he won the Nobel prize for literature and gained global recognition as Ireland's greatest poet since William Butler Yeats.

He left behind a half-century's body of work that sought to capture the essence of his experience: the sour smells and barren beauty of Irish landscapes, the haunting loss of loved ones and of memory itself, and the tormented soul of his native Northern Ireland.

As one of the world's premier classicists, he translated and interpreted ancient works of Athens and Rome for modern eyes and ears. A bear of a man with a signature mop of untamed silvery hair, he gave other writers and fans time, attention, advice ? and left a legacy of one-on-one, life-changing moments encouraged by his self-deprecating, common-man touch.

"He was a wonderful nature poet, a love poet, and a war poet. He certainly addressed the darkness of what we call 'the troubles'," said Michael Longley, a Belfast poet and longtime Heaney confidant, who recalled chatting happily with Heaney over whiskey and pints of beer earlier this month at a western Irish literary festival.

"I told him I'd been re-reading his early works from the 1960s, and I just couldn't believe that as a young man he was capable of writing such miracles. He continued to write miracles throughout his life," Longley said. "He was a poet of extraordinary complexity and profundity, so it's surprising and remarkable that he also could be so popular. ... It's not popular, poetry. Seamus made it popular."

Heaney rarely turned down requests to speak, and kept globe-trotting to university lectures and cultural seminars despite a 2006 stroke that forced him, temporarily, to slow down. Audiences sought to hear his readings in person, delivered in his melodic baritone. He inspired respect and love.

"We cannot adequately express our profound sorrow at the loss of one of the world's greatest writers," said Heaney's London publisher, Faber & Faber. "His impact on literary culture is immeasurable. As his publisher we could not have been prouder to publish his poetry over nearly 50 years. He was nothing short of an inspiration to the company, and his friendship over many years is a great loss."

The eldest of nine children from a County Tyrone farming village, Heaney went to Catholic boarding school in Northern Ireland's second-largest city, Londonderry, a bitterly divided community that soon became the crucible of "the troubles," the quaint local euphemism for a four-decade conflict over the British territory that has claimed more than 3,700 lives.

His early work was rooted in vivid description of rural experience, such as in 1966's collection "Death of a Naturalist," when his poem "Digging" describes his father's labor cutting turf bricks from a bog ? and concludes with his own decision to work with a pen, not a shovel.

"Between my finger and my thumb

The squat pen rests.

I'll dig with it."

As Northern Ireland's sectarian divisions exploded into civil war in the early 1970s, Heaney's writing grew more sociological and political as he dug into the slippery psychology of his homeland.

In 1972, the most deadly year of Northern Ireland's conflict, Heaney left his academic post in Queen's University in Belfast to settle in the Republic of Ireland. That year, he published "Wintering Out," a collection of poems that offered only oblique references to the bloodshed.

His follow-up 1975 collection, "North," offered much more direct commentary on the conflict. His poem "Whatever You Say Say Nothing" became a Northern Ireland catch phrase for the art of concealing one's loyalty ? whether Irish Catholic or British Protestant ? in response to strangers' probing questions.

His most quoted work may be from "The Cure at Troy," a 1991 adaptation of a Greek play by Sophocles set in the Trojan War. His version, rooted in Northern Ireland, sought to draw a line under a conflict that featured Irish Republican Army hunger strikes and the IRA killing of hundreds of police officers.

"A hunger-striker's father

stands in the graveyard dumb.

The police widow in veils

faints at the funeral home.

History says, Don't hope

on this side of the grave.

But then, once in a lifetime

the longed for tidal wave

of justice can rise up,

and hope and history rhyme."

Scores of world leaders have borrowed those lines in their peacemaking speeches. John Hume, a Northern Ireland leader of the Irish nationalist side who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1998, said Heaney's work offered "a special channel for repudiating violence, injustice and prejudice, and urging us all to the better side of our human nature."

Heaney was the fourth Irishman to win the Nobel prize for literature, joining Yeats, Samuel Beckett and George Bernard Shaw.

Heaney's focus on the approaching inevitability of death was evident in his final collection of poems, "Human Chain," published in 2010. One stanza reflected on the recent death of a longtime friend:

"The door was open and the house was dark

Wherefore I called his name, although I knew

The answer this time would be silence."

In 2011, he donated the files of his life's work to the National Library of Ireland, including all written and typed manuscripts and revisions from 1963 to 2010, his scripts of university lectures, and his myriad projects translating the work of non-English poets from ancient Greece to modern Poland.

And in one of his final public appearances this month at an event celebrating Yeats, he initially described "Human Chain" as "my last book" ? then, with a wry chuckle, switched his words to "my latest collection." While hundreds had brought copies of his works seeking his signature, he unusually declined.

Heaney is survived by his wife, Marie, and children Christopher, Michael and Catherine. Funeral arrangements were not announced.

Take time to learn web design basics. Read about HTML, CSS and all of the other things that go into creating an effective site. It is good to use thirty minutes a day to improve your webpage.

Offer information your customers can use if you want to build an online following. Having a one page site with only the hours of operation listed will not boost your number of customers. Add interesting, relevant content like reviews and instructional articles that demonstrate your expertize and legitimacy in the eyes of prospective customers.

A really good Internet marketing tip is to make your website stand out. The web is inundated with business, so you need to become innovative in order to set yourself apart from the pack. One way to achieve this is to focus on exclusive products and services.

Start small when building a site to market a product and gradually grow, adding new features or components slowly. When a site is overloaded with millions of indexed pages, search engines may pass over the site and target a page with fewer and more focused pages.

There are many similarities between Website marketing and other forms of marketing. As an example, the search engines might alter the way that they rank webpages by shifting their attention from title tags to some other element of the page instead. If something like this happens, it might become better to market to a viral video audience.

The strategies that you have just read about can increase the success of your online business. Now you?re ready to start applying these tips to your business. You might find that you have to make some adjustments to your approach. The most important thing is to always be open to learning and trying new things.

Remodelando la Casa: Amazing New Hampshire Home Tour

Amazing New Hampshire Home Tour

A few weeks ago me and my family were able to take a couple weeks off from our daily routine and enjoy a much needed vacation. ?Our first trip was to New York city, were we met my sister and her family and we all went sightseeing and enjoying the city. We had a great time there, but after all the hustle and bustle of the big city we headed up north to New Hampshire to visit my sister-in-law's family.

It was the perfect place to relax and unwind. ?Her gorgeous vacation home, designed by architect Charles H. Pawley, sits on 140 acres of peaceful delight.

Nestled in the mountains and surrounded by conservation lands, it was the perfect setting for us to go hiking on the many trails the property has, swimming in the private lake frontage, boating, kayaking, and having a good time just being there!

But oh well, I want to give you a tour of this New London, NH "Colorado inspired" home that my SIL Pat has meticulously designed to meet her family's lifestyle. It's a long tour that I divided in three posts, the main home, the guest house and the outdoor areas. ?So, get yourself comfortable, grab a cup of coffee and be the guest.

Upon entering the house, the foyer is the welcoming point, a very warm and inviting round space.

The floor with imprinted multicolored leaves is hard to ignore. You'll be tempted, like I did the first time I stepped on it, to take your shoes off and feel its texture.

Art pieces are well displayed throughout the house.

Wood and stone tied up the whole property. ?This corridor takes you to the heart of the house, the kitchen.

A kitchen any chef would love.

From the kitchen as from nearly every room in the house, you have a panoramic view of Pleasant Lake, Mt. Kearsarge, Mt. Sunapee, and the Mink Hills beyond.

The dining room, a good place to entertain and have a good dinner.

However, alfresco lunches and dinners were the ones I cherished the most.

Back in the dining room, a pair of tailored pleated benches can be pulled to the table when more guests arrive.

From here you can have a peak at the majestic stone fireplace in the living room.

This is one of my favorite rooms. ?I don't know if it's the high ceilings, the fireplace...

The lighting, the baby grand piano,

The gigantic picture framed windows, or perhaps all of them, that make this room so sumptuous but at the same time so cozy. ?It was the perfect spot for my son to relax.

The art above the fireplace brought me back to my origins, my family... South America.

Colombian artist Pedro Ruiz's paint of a Kayapo boy, based on a picture taken by Jean Pierre-Dutilleoux during one of his visits to the Amazon, is simply stunning.

Green built-ins set the office apart from the rest of the house.

No detail is overlooked.

More corridors take you to other places in the house.

The laundry room.

Up the steps and always going through picturesque views,

The master bedroom takes center stage.

The master bedroom and the sitting room have their own fireplaces.

The use of wood and stone materials continues into the master bathroom.

Once again, the view is unparalleled.

The theater is the main focal area in the basement.

Luxurious details like the fringed ottoman or the cheetah print carpet sets the tone here for entertainment.

It is here where the the owners put a whimsical twist to the decor.

There are six bedrooms, five full baths, five fireplaces and 2 half baths in the house. ?I couldn't snoop in all of them. ?I hope you have enjoyed the tour and come back for the Guest House tour, which is the place where we stayed.

By the way, you can be the proud owner of this house, it's up for sell ;)

Fast food strikes to hit cities across the country

John Minchillo / AP

Fast food workers are planning Thursday to hold what organizers say would be the largest strikes to hit that industry ever. Workers are demanding higher wages.

Fast-food customers in search of burgers and fries might run into striking workers instead.?

Organizers say thousands of fast-food workers are set to stage walkouts in dozens of cities around the country Thursday, part of a push to get chains such as McDonald's, Taco Bell and Wendy's to pay workers higher wages.?

It's expected be the largest nationwide strike by fast-food workers, according to organizers. The biggest effort so far was over the summer when about 2,200 of the nation's millions of fast-food workers staged a one-day strike in seven cities.?

Thursday's planned walkouts follow a series of strikes that began last November in New York City, then spread to cities including Chicago, Detroit and Seattle. Workers say they want $15 an hour, which would be about $31,000 a year for full-time employees. That's more than double the federal minimum wage, which many fast food workers make, of $7.25 an hour, or $15,000 a year.?

The move comes amid calls from the White House, some members of Congress and economists to hike the federal minimum wage, which was last raised in 2009. But most proposals seek a far more modest increase than the ones workers are asking for, with President Barack Obama wanting to boost it to $9 an hour.?

The push has brought considerable media attention to a staple of the fast-food industry ? the so-called "McJobs" that are known for their low pay and limited prospects. But the workers taking part in the strikes still represent a tiny fraction of the broader industry. And it's not clear if the strikes on Thursday will shut down any restaurants because organizers made their plans public earlier in a call for workers around the country to participate, which gave managers time to adjust their staffing levels. More broadly, it's not clear how many customers are aware of the movement, with turnout for past strikes relatively low in some cities.?

Laila Jennings, a 29-year-old sales associate at T.J. Maxx, was eating at a McDonald's in New York City this week and said she hadn't heard of the movement. Still, she said she thinks workers should be paid more. "They work on their feet all day," Jennings said, adding that $12 to $15 an hour seemed fair.?

As it stands, fast-food workers say they can't live on what they're paid.?

Shaniqua Davis, 20, lives in the Bronx with her boyfriend, who is unemployed, and their 1-year-old daughter. Davis has worked at a McDonald's a few blocks from her apartment for the past three months, earning $7.25 an hour. Her schedule varies, but she never gets close to 40 hours a week. "Forty? Never. They refuse to let you get to that (many) hours."?

Her weekly paycheck is $150 or much lower. "One of my paychecks, I only got $71 on there. So I wasn't able to do much with that. My daughter needs stuff, I need to get stuff for my apartment," said Davis, who plans to take part in the strike Thursday.?

She pays the rent with public assistance but struggles to afford food, diapers, subway and taxi fares, cable TV and other expenses with her paycheck.?

"It's really hard," she said. "If I didn't have public assistance to help me out, I think I would have been out on the street already with the money I make at McDonald's."?

McDonald's Corp. and Burger King Worldwide Inc. say that they don't make decisions about pay for the independent franchisees that operate the majority of their U.S. restaurants.?

For the restaurants it does own, McDonald's said in a statement that pay starts at minimum wage but the range goes higher, depending on the employee's position and experience level. It said that raising entry-level wages would mean higher overall costs, which could result in higher prices on menus.?

"That would potentially have a negative impact on employment and business growth in our restaurants, as well as value for our customers," the company said in a statement.?

The Wendy's Co. and Yum Brands Inc., which owns KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, did not respond to a request for comment.?

The National Restaurant Association says the low wages reflect the fact that most fast-food workers tend to be younger and have little work experience. Scott DeFife, a spokesman for the group, says that doubling wages would hurt job creation, noting that fast-food chains are already facing higher costs for ingredients, as well as new regulations that will require them to pay more in health care costs.?

Still, the actions are striking a chord in some corners.?

Robert Reich, a worker advocate and former Labor Secretary in the Clinton administration, said that the struggles of living on low wages is hitting close to home for many because of the weak economic climate.?

"More and more, people are aware of someone either in their wider circle of friends or extended family who has fallen on hard times," Reich said.?

Mary Kay Henry, president of the Service Employees International Union, which is providing the fast-food strikes with financial support and training, said the actions in recent months show that fast-food workers can be mobilized, despite the industry's relatively higher turnover rates and younger age.?

"The reality has totally blown through the obstacles," she said.?

New Weir to Assist Sedgefield's Water Supply - Love Knysna!

Sedgefield water supply - Karatara weirAn innovative weir that will contribute towards clean and safe potable water for the wider Sedgefield area until at least 2030 was officially opened in the Karatara River yesterday (28 August).

[Wikipedia: "weir is a barrier across a river designed to alter its flow characteristics."]

Speaking at the official handover ceremony of the weir to the Knysna Municipality, Knysna?s Mayor said the weir was an innovative approach to a range of water supply and environmental issues.

?The weir was primarily built to keep salt water out at the abstraction point of our fresh drinking water to reduce contamination, but its design also perfectly addresses other issues such as the need for more fresh water storage capacity and reduced risk of flooding at the nearby low water bridge.

?The brilliance of this solution lies with the stainless steel gates that will open and close automatically depending on the water levels and salinity. The ?open? weir gates will float when the river is flowing normally and in flood conditions, but will close automatically when the river stops flowing or when the level of the saline in the water in the Swartvlei rises to a certain level. The risk to human life is also reduced as no manual operation is needed during flood conditions.?

Situated about 10km outside Sedgefield near a low water bridge also known as Jan Sak se Drif, the weir is an integral part of the long-term supply plan of potable water for Sedgefield and surrounds ? an area which serves an estimated 11 200 permanent residents and up to an additional 14 000 visitors in the peak summer season.

Knysna?s Municipal Manager said that issues surrounding potable water supply had become increasingly prominent with the economic boom of the Garden Route from 2002 onwards. ?The sources of water in the Knysna municipal area are all rivers, which are always vulnerable, especially in times of drought. On-going growth of our towns and the region placed additional strain on our resources and investigations into various options had been initiated.?

The matter came to a serious head when the region?s longest drought in human memory eventually led to Sedgefield running out of potable water in January 2008. The town had water trucked in and made several emergency adjustments to resolve the matter in the interim. Another major concern was the high levels of salinity in the Karatara River and Swartvlei as reduced flow from the rivers could not sufficiently dilute salty water that pushed up from the sea. High salt content in raw water does not only pose bacterial health risks and has the potential to damage water treatment equipment, it is also harmful to fauna and flora in and around rivers.

The municipality initially considered the building of a dam in the Karatara River, but the financial implications (R130-million estimate in 2008) and environmental impacts rendered it not viable. ?A more integrated solution for Sedgefield, including several boreholes and a desalination plant, was submitted to the Department of Water Affairs in 2010. It included a specially designed weir that would keep salt water out but also trap enough fresh water to supply the entire Sedgefield community for 10 days ? and with it sufficient time to activate the town?s other conjunctive water sources should it become necessary.?

The mayor said it took nearly three years of planning, environmental investigation, consultation and public participation to finally open the weir. ?It sounds like a long time to get 80 metres of cement in a line but it actually signifies the dedication and determination with which a complex set of issues were addressed. This project was exceptionally well-managed and is a true testimony to how government, community and business can work together towards sustainable infrastructure solutions. The result is an environmentally sensitive, water collecting and protecting structure that will keep more water fresher for longer.

?Just as a small, fun example, one of the requirements for this design was that provision be made for fish that swim upstream to spawn, and hence a fish ladder was subsequently implemented for just this purpose,? said Ms Wolmarans.

Seventy-five percent of the R7,1-million weir was paid for by a Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG), which means the cost to local ratepayers was relatively little and in exchange for infrastructure that will significantly contribute towards a secure, permanent, uncontaminated supply of water for the community of Sedgefield and surrounds until at least 2030.

The Mayor said there were also indirect economic benefits that may come from the establishing of the weir. ?The issues surrounding water supply and flooding have influenced the property market in Sedgefield in particular. We believe that in the long term, the on-going successful rollout of the Comprehensive Water Plan for Sedgefield will address this sufficiently and set prospective property owners at ease.?

The mayor thanked the wide range of rolepayers including :

Local community members who had assisted in the selection and provision of labour during the construction phase of this project.

Microsoft?s director of product planning doesn?t foresee the return of DRM

Xbox One DRM won't return, according to Penello.

Xbox One DRM won?t return, according to Penello.

Albert Penello, Microsoft?s?Director of Product Planning, decided, after seeing a??NeoGAF thread, to attempt to assuage the fears of?many gamers who are?planning (or are simply on the?fence about) to purchase an Xbox One.

Said Mr. Penello, ??I don?t want to open up an entirely new issue here, but here?s my shot. I don?t see that ever happening with content you?re buying today either on disc and digitally.?All of that DRM stuff was in place because there was no physical security on the disc itself, so all the licensing was done digitally.?

He goes on to explain, ?When you build that type of model, then you need to make sure people can?t install games on a bunch of machines, then unplug them. That would have made us an awesome Pirating machine, and that can?t happen for obvious reasons. When we went back to disc security, those DRM policies weren?t necessary. So no reason to turn it on later.?

What do you think? Is this just a coporate director saying what he believes gamers want to hear? Or is he being honest?

Thanks, OXM.

Ridgelines, Waffles, and Shredding In the Great State of Washington

Words: Sarah Leishman Photos: Paris Gore

Leavenworth, Washington has made a name for itself as one of the best places to ride on the west side of North America. Since the hugely successful 2011 opening of the Stevens Pass Bike Park after years of ducking, dodging and finding a way through US Forest Service land policies, the world at large has begun to recognize the incredible riding this region has to offer. Even before Stevens Pass came to fruition, most seasoned mountain bikers have recognized Leavenworth and its local trail network for being full of some of the most kickass terrain in Washington?and even BC, if you?re willing to make the trek (and you should be!).

Pinkbike photographer Paris Gore, my better half Andrew Gunn, and I headed to Leavenworth this spring in an attempt to hit all of the trails we?ve missed in visits before this one, and to ride them all on our trusty trail bikes. I?m lucky to say I?ve visited Leavenworth a few times, including getting a healthy taste of the remarkable Stevens Pass Bike Park in its early days of opening. I?ve learned from the trips of my past to make sure I had big rotors on my trail bike this time around and that a 6-inch travel trail bike would be more than appropriate here for the massive descents that awaited us. Leavenworth should really be code for ?sick ridgeline rides everywhere?. Open, flowing, sandy in the summer, tacky and perfect in the spring and fall. These are trails built by folks who close up their bike shop (James Munlee, who owns the accommodating and informative Das Rad Haus in the downtown core) on Sundays with a sign that says ?Closed For Trail Maintenance?.

Leavenworth was officially incorporated in 1905 and had a long history of benefiting from the fruits of the sawmill and logging industry until the local economy ground to a near halt when the Great Northern Railway Company was rerouted away from the town in the 1950s. The locals were forced to look at options to keep people passing through so they could stay alive and in the late 1960?s, the entire downtown core was redesigned to appear Bavarian against the backdrop of their impressive mountain ranges. In addition to hosting some of the biggest Christmas festivals in the country and a year round Christmas shop, story goes that the Starbucks there is the only one in the world to have an adapted font in its logo to fit with the theme of its surrounding neighbours.

Named one of the ?Fifty Next Great Adventure Towns? by National Geographic Adventure, Leavenworth is known largely for wineries, Octoberfest, never-ending Christmas, rock climbing and a downtown core that is typically bustling and full of people. Its population of just over 2500 is full of skiers, climbers and avid mountain bikers of the absolute best kind: those ?I don?t give an eff about my jersey? types have built an epic trail network in this town.

We encountered riders of all types in our days while shooting in Leavenworth. We were lucky enough to run into Tim, who played a huge role in the original bike trails in town and is now working on the Stevens Pass Bike Park trail crew. We also found intermediate riders, mega shredders from Bend seeking refuge from an enduro race that was in their town for the weekend and a few other dedicated descent-earners all over the network. The trails in Leavenworth can suit any type of rider: I?ve been scared here on a big bike and I?ve seen little kids riding out on the green Freund trail as they earned their stripes for bigger stuff down the road.

Between the kitschy downtown core of Leavenworth, the mind blowing descents of Xanadu, Rosie Boa (one of Leavenworth?s original and contentious local pieces of single track), the gnarlier Tres Hombres and many other gems laid neatly just outside of town, the trip to this mountain town just outside of Seattle is absolutely worth the trek for big and little bikers alike. Local trailbuilders in this town have run the gamut of trail use conflicts over the years and love their trails like they were their own children. The experience you get on your bike as a result is absolute soul riding, mixed with some high speed, face melting shredding down some of the most beautiful terrain you?re likely to see in your lifetime.

Football preview: Steinbrenner

QB Fitch invaluable to Warriors

?
Curtis Fitch has been a constant for Steinbrenner since becoming the squad?s starting quarterback as a freshman.

Warriors coach Andres Perez-Reinaldo said Fitch is like another coach on the field.

?He makes sure that everyone is doing what they?re supposed to do, he leads by example and does everything we ask,? said Perez, who was the squad?s offensive coordinator before taking over as coach last season.

Now, the 5-foot-10, 195-pound senior is on a mission to help the fifth-year program earn its first playoff berth.

?We centered our offseason workouts and practices around getting to the playoffs,? said Fitch, who threw for 1,031 yards and seven touchdowns last year. ?We need the playoffs; we want the playoffs, and this is my last chance to help this team do that.?

SUPPLY

Special teams

The often overlooked third side of football has been one of Steinbrenner?s strengths the last few years.

The Warriors averaged more than 21 yards per return last season, and that trend continued during a 22-21 win against Alonso in the spring game.

That comeback win included kickoff returns for of 81 and 82 yards for touchdowns by junior Kezio Snelling, with the second coming with 33 seconds remaining in the contest.

Momentum

Steinbrenner stumbled to a 1-4 start last season, but responded with three straight wins to close the season 5-5.

Add in a last-second, comeback win against Alonso in their spring game, and the Warriors are rolling with much momentum.

?I think you can really feel that helping us right now,? Snelling said. ?We all know what we can do if we just listen to our coaches and put in the work like we have in our last four games.?

DEMAND

Defensive backs

The Warriors graduate their four starting defensive backs from last year.

?We lost our starters, but we?ve got a bunch of guys who got plenty of playing time last year,? Perez-Reinaldo said. ?Coach (Cedric) Roberts does a great job working with our DBs, and I think that will continue to be an area where we?re very strong at.?

Playmakers

The Warriors will also be without Kendall Pearcey and Jon Marc Carrier, who produced 2,184 yards of offense and 19 touchdowns last year.

Fitch said he isn?t worried and believes they still have the athletes to make explosive plays.

?Kezio Snelling really showed us all something in the spring game, and he?s a real humble guy,? Fitch said. ?We?ve got Shyheem Barthel coming back and Cody Burgess, and those are all guys who learned from Jon Marc and Kendall.
