FALLS CHURCH, Va. ? General Dynamics Corp. said Wednesday that its second-quarter earnings rose slightly as lower costs somewhat offset revenue declines across several business units.

The defense contractor's earnings beat Wall Street expectations while revenue came in short. It raised its full year earnings expectations.

For the April-June period, the company said its net income rose to $653 million, or $1.77 per share, in the April-June period. That's up from $648 million, or $1.69 per share, a year earlier.

Revenue fell 3 percent to $7.88 billion from $8.10 billion. Costs fell 1 percent. Margins stayed flat.

Analysts polled by FactSet Research expected a profit of $1.73 per share on revenue of $8.28 billion.

The company now expects earnings from continuing operations to be between $7.15 and $7.20 per share, compared with an earlier range of $7 to $7.10 per share. Analysts were forecasting $7.13 a share.

Its shares fell $1.69, or 2.4 percent, to close at $68.63 Wednesday as the broader market pulled back.

General Dynamics Corp., which is based in Falls Church, Va., said revenue fell in its core aerospace, marine systems and information systems and technology units. Revenue was up slightly in the company's combat unit.

The company's total order backlog at the end of the quarter was $57.1 billion. General Dynamics said demand for Gulfstream aircraft and services were particularly strong. Combat, marine and IT units also received key orders during the quarter.

This is just as important as the visual design. Both of these steps are prerequisites before you begin working on the cover art. It is important to get support in this area, perhaps from a branding expert or a group of trusted colleagues. Really take your time with this step, because it will be your foundation. The book title and cover will need to be a stand-alone brand as well as align with your own brand.

From there, ideas will spring forth. Use a competent graphic designer to help you brainstorm, and keep in mind things like color, fonts and typography, clean visual balance, simplicity, and photography or illustration. These are the elements that go into good book cover design. I?ve designed a few covers in my branding career, and the way I like to start is by going to a bookstore and immersing myself in the section of the store that relates to the project I?m working on. The font we chose was reminiscent of fashion magazine typography, and that was another important marketing angle for us.

As for Lori Siegel?s book pictured above, it was important for us to show Lori and make her the main focus. She was the expert, and she was also launching her speaking career. People needed to see her face. Portrait photography became a very important element, as did the color palate.

The 3DS, the Japanese firm's most important gaming device this year, was touted at its launch as the world's first video game console with a 3-D screen that works without special glasses.

But the Japanese gaming giant has struggled in the face of competition from smartphones and tablets such as Apple's iPhone and iPad onto which cheap or even free games can be quickly downloaded and played.

Just 710,000 units of the 3DS have been sold since going on sale.

In a note to clients, Nomura Securities said Nintendo needed to "radically change its tactics" to once again increase the size of its gaming population.

In June the company unveiled its Wii U, the follow up to the successful Wii that brought motion-sensing gaming to the mainstream.

But analysts fear that the new product may not be able to retain the audience first captured by the Wii as more gamers migrate to smartphones and social networking sites such as Facebook.

Nomura said it commended the "bold" move to slash the price of the 3DS, "as a way of regaining lost momentum and preventing the rot from spreading to the Wii U (which is scheduled for release in 2012)".

Right-wing terrorism has hit post-War Europe in the past: The 1980 bombing of Bologna railway station that killed 80 people was blamed on a neo-Fascist organization; a pipe-bomb attack attributed to a rightist radical in the same year killed 13 people at Munich's Oktoberfest; self-confessed neo-Nazi David Copeland killed three people and injured 139 in a nail bomb attacks against London's black, gay and Bangladeshi communities in 1999.

But despite growing incidents of skinhead street attacks on minorities, police who have successfully infiltrated white supremacist groups have downplayed their capacity to launch large-scale attacks in Europe. Breivik seems to have escaped scrutiny from the security forces by acting alone as a "solo cell" as he explained in his web posting.

Support for popularist, nationalist political parties has surged in many parts of Europe in recent years, exploiting concern over the economic downturn and immigration, particularly the growing number of Muslims living in their countries.

From the National Front in France, to the Dutch Freedom Party -- whose leader Geert Wilders likens Islam to Nazism -- and Norway's Progress Party, which once listed Breivik among its members, parties formerly treated as pariahs have become part of the political mainstream across Europe. Such parties distance themselves from the violent fringe and many were quick to condemn the attack in Norway.

"The horrible and cowardly attacks we've witnessed are contrary to the principles and values underpinning the Norwegian society," said Progress Party leader Siv Jensen. "It makes me feel extra sad to know that this person once was a member of our party."

In the Netherlands, Wilders described the gunman as a "sick psychopath" and insisted the Freedom Party, "abhors everything the man stands for." Breivik had called Wilders a "steadfast" defender of Western values and listed him among the people he'd most like to meet.

After nine years in the Progress Party, Breivik left in 2006, saying he'd lost faith in democratic politics and decided only violent action could bring about the overthrow of multicultural society. He also developed contacts with the anti-Islamic English Defense League, but said they too were "naive" in not switching to a military campaign.

The number of Europeans involved in neo-Nazi and other far right parties is unclear. German intelligence estimates there are 25,000 ultra-rightists in the country, of which 5,600 are hard-core neo-Nazis. "We can observe and increase in the potential for violence and the willingness to use violence to enforce political goals," it said in a report issued earlier this month.

In Sweden, the far-right internet forum Nordisk.nu has 22,000 users, including Breivik, according to the monitoring group Expo, which was set up by Stieg Larsson, author of the best-selling Millennium series of crime novels.

In the wake of Friday's attacks, security forces across Europe are reviewing anti-terror policies to focus more on far-right organizations or "lone wolves" like Breivik. British police already warned this month that white-supremacists may try to provoke a violent backlash with attacks on the Muslim community. Breivik talked openly about the need to trigger a civil war to defeat Islam and "cultural-Marxism."

"For too long, the challenge from right-wing extremism and anti-Muslim sentiment has been dismissed as irrelevant, and glossed in favour of alternative forms of extremism. 'Far right activists will never get their act together', so the argument goes. 'They are disorganized and lack the resources to commit mass murder'," Matthew Goodwin a University of Nottingham expert on far right extremism blogged on Saturday. "In short, the concept of lone wolves committing mass violence appeared more at home in fiction than political reality. The events in Norway have changed all this."

Recently, RIM predicted that its quarterly revenue could be lower, its first drop in nine years. It's steadily losing market share to Apple and Google's Android, which many industry observers have attributed to being late in upgrading its smartphone platform.

Avi Greengart, an analyst with industry research firm Current Analysis, said his main question is "what are they reacting to?" It could be a reaction to Wall Street's perception, he said. The company's stock has plummeted 52 percent in the last year.

But, Greengart noted, RIM is "still profitable," adding that "unit sales in some areas, such as Europe and parts of Asia, are up dramatically." He noted that the company's main problem is in "high-end sales, everywhere."

Since sales of some product lines are up, and the company is undergoing "a massive transition of moving to a new platform in order to compete with Google, Apple and Microsoft," Greengart questioned the cutbacks.

'Business 101'

"It's Business 101," he noted. When steady revenue is coming in and profits are up, Greengart said "cutting the people working on that transition and those profits could be suicide." He added that the executive reorganization makes sense if there was a need for a change there, but right now "RIM needs everyone working around the clock" without any adverse impact on employee morale.

"They should be investing, going for broke right now," Greengart added. It's not yet clear if RIM's emerging product line is "strong enough" to go head-to-head with Apple and Google, he said, although it's evident they were "certainly late" in matching the competition.

A key question is whether RIM, like Palm and Nokia, which also were once mobile kings, is in a downward spiral. Greengart said it's "too soon to say," but RIM is clearly enjoying "massive overseas growth," still has a strong brand, and its new PlayBook tablet recently won a Best of Show award at a major trade show in the U.K.

"I'm not saying they're done," he noted, "but the risk is there."

The Chronicle is urging a tough stance on gay and lesbian relationships in our schools and colleges, especially, boarding institutions in our second cycle schools. Invariably, most adherents in this society acquire their urge for this perversion in boarding institutions.

It is a universally acknowledged truth in this nation that some boys and girls in boarding schools begin the disgusting practice as a means of easing tension. A number of them stop the practice after school.

The senators have been working on bridging the divide between their two parties for months, but appeared to have all but given up after Republican Tom Coburn of Oklahoma quit the group in mid-May.

Mr. Coburn was back in the fold on Tuesday, telling reporters the Gang of Six plan had been tweaked to add more than $100-billion in cuts to health care programs. (On Monday, Mr. Coburn released his own deficit-reduction proposal, suggesting cuts to spending and tax breaks that would reduce the budget gap by $9-trillion over 10 years.) The Gang of Six kept details to a minimum as they gave their colleagues in the Senate time to review its blueprint. The plan would seek to narrow the deficit immediately by $500-billion. Eventually, the Gang of Six would cut discretionary spending and the defense budget, contain the rising costs of Medicare and Social Security and kill tax breaks worth about $1-trillion.

?We have gotten into the weeds,? Idaho Republican Mike Crapo, a member of the Gang of Six, told Bloomberg Television. ?This is a solid plan.?

Mr. Crapo?s group previewed their proposal at a closed door meeting attended by about 50 of the 100 senators on Capitol Hill. The reviews were positive.

Germany, France reach accord on Greek bailout (Reuters)

BERLIN/PARIS (Reuters) ? Germany and France have reached a common position on a second bailout of Greece in their effort to prevent the country's debt crisis from spreading through Europe, officials said on Thursday.

The accord came after seven hours of talks late into Wednesday night between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Berlin, sources in both governments said.

Details of the common position were not revealed, but the French delegation said it would include a contribution to the Greek bailout by Europe's banking sector. European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet joined Merkel and Sarkozy for part of their talks.

The Franco-German accord will now be presented to a summit in Brussels on Thursday of all 17 leaders of the single currency area to address the Greek crisis, which in the last two weeks has threatened to engulf bigger states such as Italy.

The new bailout would supplement a 110 billion euro ($156 billion) rescue plan for Greece launched in May last year. It is expected to include fresh emergency loans to Athens from euro zone governments and the International Monetary Fund, and a contribution by private sector investors.

Worried about the impact on financial markets and wary of angering their own taxpayers, euro zone governments have struggled for several weeks to agree on major aspects of the plan, especially the private sector contribution.

The euro rose moderately against the dollar in response to the Franco-German announcement, but markets may remain nervous until details are revealed. Providing fresh money to Greece and arranging for banks to participate could face legal and technical obstacles.

The head of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, warned on Wednesday that the global economy would suffer if Europe could not summon the political will to act decisively on Greece.

"Nobody should be under any illusion: the situation is very serious. It requires a response, otherwise the negative consequences will be felt in all corners of Europe and beyond," Barroso told a news conference.
