Free Money Finance: Save Money by Teaming with Your Neighbors

US News lists 10 unusual ways to save money. Tip #1 is as follows:

Share With Your Neighbors. When it comes to buying food or paying for things such as the Internet or Netflix, rally the troops (aka your neighbors) to save some money. Split the cost of Internet and Netflix with a few neighbors, buy food items in bulk then divide the food and bill, or rotate dinner-making responsibilities between different houses to save money on food expenses.

We recently benefitted (again) from this tip.

Several years ago the homeowners in our development banded together and bid out our garbage pick-up services. Waste Management was the winner, so we went with them and each homeowner saved somewhere around $75 a year versus the list price. But it was a never-ending fight to keep the prices down as WM tried and tried again to raise them (we had to call several times to remind them that we were part of the group "deal" and that our prices should not be going up.) Finally the homeowners got tired of this back-and-forth, and we recently re-bid out the services. A new, local player has emerged since we last priced out the competition and they came in $100 lower than Waste Management. So we all made the switch in June.

There are a TON of products and services that you can save on if you team up with your neighbors. A few ideas:

  • Snow removal (for those of us living in the tundra)
  • Landscaping
  • Pest control
  • Home repairs
  • Yard equipment (borrow from each other)
  • Bulk buys (good deals at Costco can be split among neighbors)

You get the idea. Anytime buying in bulk/as a group can save some money (which is often), teaming with your neighbors can ring up some big discounts.

I'm sure you can name many more. If you have something to add, please leave them in the comments below.

Why Should You Choose Energy Star Products ... - Home Comfort Experts

If you?re upgrading your home?s HVAC equipment, one easy way to make smarter choices is to look for the Energy Star seal. The Energy Star program was created to help consumers easily identify products with superior energy efficiency. To earn the seal, an appliance must be at least 10 percent more efficient than required by government protocols and use non-proprietary technologies that prevent market monopolization.

There are three major benefits to using Energy Star-rated home heating and air conditioning appliances, which include water heaters, furnaces, air conditioners, and ventilation and air circulation equipment:

  1. Sustainability. Because appliances that bear the seal use less electricity, you?re doing your part to help reduce strain on your local power grid and decrease your carbon footprint. Producing electricity is harmful to the environment, so the less you need and the less you consume, the better for everyone.
  2. Savings. Because Energy Star appliances use less electricity to generate the same results, they help you save significant amounts of money over the long term. Installing products which bear the seal in your home will reduce your utility bill, all without forcing you to sacrifice any of the comfort or convenience you?ve become accustomed to.
  3. Tax incentives. In the United States, the federal government is offering generous tax credits to homeowners who upgrade to energy-efficient appliances and products in 2011. These rebates vary, according to the type and cost of the equipment you purchase, but can be applied to a wide range of appliances including furnaces, air circulators, air conditioners and water heaters.

All in all, choosing products that bear the seal is a wise and responsible home improvement strategy. Saving energy saves you money, all while helping the environment.

At Home Comfort Experts, we want to promote a greener tomorrow while helping our customers reduce their utility bills and decrease their electricity consumption. That?s why we?re proud to offer a wide range of home HVAC appliances that bear the Energy Star seal. If you?d like to learn more, or want to inquire about the availability of specific products, please contact us.

Our goal is to help educate our customers about energy and home comfort issues (specific to HVAC systems).? For more information about?Energy Star products?and other HVAC topics, download our free Home Comfort Resource guide.
