PLYMOUTH SOUTH GOLF: Panthers swing toward a younger team

With an inexperienced team and a program that hasn?t enjoyed much success in many years, the goal for the Plymouth South golf team this season is to improve with an eye toward the future.

?I try to tell the younger kids that it?s all about getting better and learning how to manage their game,? Head Coach Tom Hicks said. ?Golf is a tough sport, and when you add in the element of competition, it becomes that much tougher. I just want them to gain some experience for the next few years. That will be important for us to grow as a program and to keep guys coming back.

?My goal is for them to become more consistent players, be more competitive and have some fun out there.?

The Panthers are coming off a 3-11 season, and they have graduated their top four players, which doesn?t bode well in the challenging Atlantic Coast League.

?We have a lot of new guys, so there might be new faces in every match,? Hicks said. ?There is very, very little experience with this team. It?s going to be a struggle. We?re going to work on being consistent as golfers and gain some experience for future years.?

Now in his ninth season as coach, Hicks is hoping interest in the golf program will rise, although he is skeptical. ?I work at Waverly Oaks and they offer junior programs, but it has a poor showing. I don?t know why that is,? he said. ?I just don?t see a lot of young kids in Plymouth out playing golf.?

The lone returning starters are seniors Eric Reissfelder and Coleman Barnes. Both shot in the mid-40s last season playing in the fifth and sixth slots. This fall they will be stepping into the fire to face the top two golfers on every team they face. Barnes is a solid ball-striker who can hit it long, but sometimes struggles on the greens. Reissfelder is also consistent, and the duo figure to shift between playing one and two for most of the season. As the Panthers head into their opener, Reissfelder is currently at No. 1.

The remainder of the lineup is seeing varsity action for the first time. At No. 3 and 4 are a pair of sophomores, Mack Dibella and Matt Tirell.

?They?re going to be thrown right into the mix with us losing so many key players from last year,? Hicks said.

Manning the fifth slot is Sean Vetter. Although he?s a senior, he has not played on the team since his freshman season and has yet to play a varsity match. Junior Mike Mullary, a first-year player, projects to fill the sixth slot.

Hicks said that the final two spots are wide open and could be filled by any of his remaining 10 players.
