In the classical model of gene expression, the genetic script encoded in our genomes is expressed in each cell in the form of RNA molecules, each consisting of a linear string of chemical "bases". It may be time to revise this traditional understanding of human gene expression, as new research suggests that circular RNA molecules, rather than the classical linear molecules, are a widespread feature of the gene expression program in every human cell. The results are published in the Feb. 1 issue of the online journal PLoS ONE.
A group of researchers working with HHMI investigator and biochemistry professor Patrick Brown, of Stanford University, have discovered hundreds of human gene transcripts that appear to have resulted from a non-canonical program that "splices" the RNA molecules into circles. For many genes, these circular RNAs made up a substantial fraction of all the transcripts identified, suggesting that they are far more abundant and perhaps more important than previously thought.
Circular RNAs have heretofore "flown under the radar" because traditional methods for isolating RNA from cells have inadvertently discarded these circular molecules. The exact function of circular RNAs, and potential relevance for human biology or health, if any, remains to be determined, but this study opens up many exciting avenues for further research.
"This research shows that there are still important fundamental biological programs to be discovered by experimental exploration coupled with new statistical and computational approaches," said Julia Salzman, one of the authors of the paper. "These circular RNAs may represent a yet-to-be discovered biological process."

I'll admit it: Every so often, while sending a very important text message about whether I was going food shopping and jamming out on my headphones, I walk directly into a telephone poll. No harm done, my head is sturdily affixed to the rest of my body. But if I had walked into a car, the results might have been rather gruesome.
This is an issue for many young people who are constantly engaged with their mobile devices, and a new study has confirmed that my anecdotal experience has in fact led to tragic results. Researchers from the University of Maryland have recently released a study strongly linking headphone use to increased risk of accidents for pedestrians, moving the conversation a bit from a focus only on distracted driving. The study found that serious injuries to pedestrians wearing headphones are on the rise, especially amongst young men.
While it seems likely that distracted driving is the far greater danger -- after all drivers are wielding 1,500 pounds of metal at high speed -- the study points to the need to better understand the dangers of distracted walking. The research is incomplete, but if distracted driving is often equated to drinking and driving in terms of danger, perhaps distracted walking should be compared to public intoxication.
While studies have shown that intoxicated people have a greater chance of being struck by a car, walking around drunk has never drawn the same public scorn or legal consequences that drinking and driving has -- and with good reason. Often "walking home" is a far preferable outcome than getting in the car, even if it's not the optimal solution.
But as our lives become ever more entwined with technology, is it time to consider a law that would fine people for distracted walking?
This idea gained a bit of traction in New York and California last year, where a bill was introduced that would ban pedestrians from using cell phones while crossing the street. Part of those legislators' evidence was that pedestrian accidents increased in 2010 for the first time since 2005.
San Francisco, in particular, is a city that struggles with serious pedestrian injuries and fatalities. However the problem seems treatable as more than half of the city's major pedestrian accidents occur on only 7 percent of the roads. Mayor Ed Lee is working to improve some of the design flaws that make certain areas more dangerous for pedestrians, and I think his administration would do well to acknowledge that mobile device use distracts pedestrians and can make these already dangerous intersections more so.
Signs that caution pedestrians to get off of their cell phones when crossing the street, or a public service campaign to raise awareness would be simple first steps. As the writers of the study pointed out, the data is not definitive enough to design a perfect action plan. But it is alarming, and reinforces what we already know: Your eyes and ears are necessary to keep you safe on the streets.
We should be integrating this awareness into how we teach children about road safety, and the more general public consciousness. "Always look both ways before crossing" needs to be amended to include "and look up from your phone."

The Supreme Court recently decided a landmark case that reaffirms copyright protection for older artistic works. The case, called Golan v. Holder, involved a constitutional challenge to a US law that granted copyright protection to artistic works first published in another country between the years 1923 and 1989. The law granted copyright protection for the first time to possibly millions of works, including films by Alfred Hitchcock and paintings by Picasso.
The Law at Issue
The 1994 federal law, called the Uruguay Round Agreements Act, was passed to implement the Uruguay Round General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), an international trade negotiation that took place between 1986 and 1994 and led to the creation of the World Trade Organization. GATT includes the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPS), which requires signatories to establish minimum levels of protection for intellectual property.
When the US signed, it promised to provide for automatic restoration of copyright in foreign works that were in the public domain in the US but protected by copyright in other countries. Those works were formerly ineligible for copyright protection in the US because they were not originally published in the US.
The Copyright Case
The plaintiffs in the case, a group of orchestra conductors, performers and motion picture distributors, sought to overturn the 1994 law on the ground that Congress did not have authority under the Constitution to reinstitute copyright protection once it had already been released into the public domain. They also argued that the law violated the free speech rights of those who already used the works because they were in the public domain before.
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote the 6-2 majority opinion, focusing on the international treatment of copyrights. The US had been out of sync with other countries? treatment of copyrights and wanted to harmonize with the international community by passing the 1994 law. Prior to 1994, at the Uruguay Round discussions, the US, facing harsh criticism, remedied the situation and brought US legislation back in line with copyright protections internationally.
In response to the free speech claim, the court decided that anyone who wants to use a copyrighted work must pay for the privilege. It did not matter that the works had earlier been released to the public. Current safeguards in copyright law are sufficient to ensure that free speech interests are adequately protected.
Two dissenters in the case, Justice Stephen Breyer and Justice Samuel Alito, expressed concerns that Congress does not have the powers to withdraw works from the public domain, without providing additional incentives for producing new material. Their concern was that the 1994 law does not encourage the production of artistic works as copyright law was intended to do.
What Does This Mean for Copyrights?
For foreign works that had obtained copyrights in other countries but never in the US, the 1994 law provided a guarantee that those works would receive copyright protection for the remainder of the copyright term in the US.
Many works that were not eligible for protection before 1994 were freely copied. With the reinstatement of these works? copyright protection, industries that freely used the works before will now have to pay royalty fees to the artists.
