August 26, 2011 ? after decades of use, D.C.?s police scanners are about to go silent. next month, the Metropolitan Police Department will start encrypting its radio communications.

With its constant crackle of police codes, the scanner has long provided the background music in many local newsrooms, as well as countless hours of chatter for hobbyists known as scanner junkies.

But that?s all set to change next month, when the department switches to encrypted communications.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier says the move was made in part because of how easy it has become ? with smart phones and other technology ? for people to listen in.

?There are so many mobile apps now that you can get where you can monitor police transmissions,? she says. ?We?ve recovered numerous mobile phones that people committing crimes have set so they can listen to police radio, even on search warrants and gun cases.?

That, she says, has made police work even more dangerous.

As for scanner junkies and news reporters who rely on the information they get from the scanners to inform the community, Lanier insists they were not the prompt for the change.

?It?s not something we?re doing to keep the press out, it?s something that we?re doing to keep our community and our police officers safe,? she says.

Lanier notes that MPD would share its encryption codes with surrounding police departments, as well as keep a few radio channels open ? just in case.

Fans have been eagerly waiting to see if Robert Rodriguez would make good on his promise?that he would select?Sin City 2 his followup to?Spy Kids: All the Time in the World.

Rodriguez revealed earlier this year that financing for the graphic novel sequel had been secured and production could begin in the near future ? once he and his collaborator (original Sin City author Frank Miller) had put the finishing touches on the screenplay.

Heat Vision has learned that Academy Award-winner William Monahan (The Departed) has been brought on to add the finishing touches to the most recent Sin City 2?draft penned by Miller. The tentative plan is for production on the film to commence once the shooting script has been locked.

Monahan has been increasingly busy of late, between his work on the screenplay for the Tom Cruise-starring Horizons (formerly, Oblivion) and being recently brought onboard to pen a remake of The Gambler for his Departed director, Martin Scorsese.

Between his Oscar-winning work on Scorsese?s famous crime tale and dramatic thrillers like Body of Lies and Edge of Darkness, Monahan has earned himself a reputation for consistently churning out solid and intelligent genre pics. So news of his involvement with Sin City 2 should be all the more welcome, especially among those whose confidence in Miller?s writing abilities have wavered in recent years (in part because of his Spirit comic book movie).

Miller?s ?A Dame to Kill For? has long been rumored as the potential basis for the second Sin City movie. Here is an official synopsis for that original comic book:

Enter Dwight McCarthy, a clean-living photographer who tries to avoid trouble because he knows what he?s capable of. His tactics don?t do him much good when a girl from his past (who he can?t say no to) shows up and professes her love for him. When he finds out she?s in way over her head, it looks as though trouble has found him. What?s going to happen? You guessed it: people get hurt.

In other words, it?s your basic Film Noir setup (like all the other Sin City stories) that throws Miller?s customary breed of grisly violence into the mix. Using ?A Dame to Kill For? would also allow for the likes of Dwight (Clive Owen), Marv (Mickey Rourke), and Nancy Callahan (Jessica Alba) to reprise their roles from the first film ? though it?s possible that characters like Gail (Rosario Dawson) and Miho (Devon Aoki) could end up either making a brief cameo or playing expanded roles in the movie version.

Rodriguez and Miller will shoot Sin City 2 in the same digital black-and-white style as its predecessor, to better imitate the black ink drawing aesthetic of the latter?s original comics. Scheduling shouldn?t be an issue, since the entirety of the film will be shot against green screen, which ? combined with some tricky editing in post-production ? allows for actors and actresses to be on set at different times. Case in point: Mickey Rourke and Eljiah Wood never actually met until after Sin City had been shot, despite the fact that? well, the former actually murders the other in the movie.

Tiny oxygen generators boost effectiveness of anticancer treatment

Researchers have created and tested miniature devices that are implanted in tumors to generate oxygen, boosting the killing power of radiation and chemotherapy.

The technology is designed to treat solid tumors that are hypoxic at the center, meaning the core contains low oxygen levels.

"This is not good because radiation therapy needs oxygen to be effective," said Babak Ziaie, a Purdue University professor of electrical and computer engineering and biomedical engineering. "So the hypoxic areas are hard to kill. Pancreatic and cervical cancers are notoriously hypoxic. If you generate oxygen you can increase the effectiveness of radiation therapy and also chemotherapy."

The new "implantable micro oxygen generator" is an electronic device that receives ultrasound signals and uses the energy to generate a small voltage to separate oxygen and hydrogen from water ? a chemical operation called water electrolysis.

"We are putting these devices inside tumors and then exposing the tumors to ultrasound," Ziaie said. "The ultrasound energy powers the device, generating oxygen.

The devices were created at the Birck Nanotechnology Center in the university's Discovery Park. Purdue researchers are working with Song-Chu (Arthur) Ko, an assistant professor of clinical radiation oncology at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Researchers have tested the devices in pancreatic tumors implanted in mice, showing they generated oxygen and shrunk tumors faster than tumors without the devices. The devices are slightly less than one centimeter long and are inserted into tumors with a hypodermic biopsy needle.

"Most of us have been touched by cancer in one way or another," Ziaie said. "My father is a cancer survivor, and he went through many rounds of very painful chemotherapy. This is a new technology that has the potential to improve the effectiveness of such therapy."

Findings are detailed in a research paper appearing online this month in Transactions on Biomedical Engineering. The paper was written by research assistant professor Teimour Maleki, doctoral students Ning Cao and Seung Hyun Song, Ko and Ziaie.

"The implantable mini oxygen generator project is one of 11 projects the Alfred Mann Institute for Biomedical Development at Purdue University (AMIPurdue) has sponsored," Ziaie said. "AMIPurdue has been instrumental in providing the development funding of roughly $500,000 on this project. And beyond funding, the AMIPurdue team has also helped us with market research, physician feedback, industry input, as well as intellectual property and regulatory strategy. We have been able to accomplish a great deal in a short time due to the collaborative effort with AMIPurdue."

A patent application has been filed for the design.

Future work may focus on redesigning the device to make it more practical for manufacturing and clinical trials.
