As a youngster and now as a mature adult who have lived a fairly balanced lifestyle, the writer has always been drawn to personalities who have crave a niche for themselves, experienced success and have blazed a trail for others to emulate.?? They are usually vocal on issues of concern for development, friendly, of good repute, controversial yet resolute in their beliefs.?? On investigation the writer attribute this type of behavior to the character of the individual.

?The term character connotes an observable variability in behavior that distinguishes one individual from another.? This behavior is composed of two parts; one, an inherited character produced by the genes transmitted from one?s biological parents and the other from the environmental conditions.? Hence several institutions are contributors to character formation and development but the home is the major player.? Here are some character building activities that enhance great character.?

Chores in the home. All parents and care givers should assign appropriate duties to children in their care. This allows for involvement in the home and at the same time instilling what it is to be responsible.

Engage the children games.? Meaningful games for the family are credited for cohesiveness in family ties and bonding. These also contribute to team work and accountability. Instead of viewing the television every night, card and board games could be played by all.? Here discovery of a family member who has certain skills could be noted and the individual praised and even encouraged.

Affiliation to societies. It is a wise idea to become a member of different organizations. Here the social network would be enlarged and positive values would easily be assimilated. Some of these organizations are Boys Scouts, Girl Guides, and Brownies to name a few.? This begins at the school level where he or she is encouraged to be to active participants in extra? curricula activities.

Church and school ties. These institutions are vital to one?s development as they aim to inculcate the society?s values and acceptable behaviors.

Character building is not an isolated activity but deliberate actions by parents and those in authority to influence their off springs positively.? This takes only a few years to do correctly since the first three or five years of a child?s life will make good or ill of these teachings. No wonder the author of the book of Proverbs said ?Train up a child in the way that he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it?.

When there is good character the society is usually a healthier place to live since there will be harmony and understanding of the individual who will not display antisocial behavior.
