BUFFALO, NY--The New York State Energy and Research Development Authority (NYSERDA) has partnered with The OutSource Center to prepare women and minorities for careers in energy efficiency through work readiness training and internships. Successful trainees will participate in hands-on internships with contractors in the residential and commercial energy efficiency sector.
"NYSERDA's partnership with The OutSource Center helps prepare a skilled clean energy workforce and provides new opportunities to women and minorities living in the Greater Buffalo area," said Francis J. Murray Jr., President and CEO of NYSERDA. "It will put participants on the right path to promising careers in a growing area of New York State's economy."
A total of 48 students will participate in a five-week, 130-hour work readiness program. Participants who successfully complete the work readiness program will be placed in six-week, 180-hour, hands-on internships with licensed contractors where they will gain practical experience.
The training is comprised of two components - basic construction and energy assessment. The basic construction curriculum includes OSHA adherence, asbestos removal, lead abatement, mold abatement, first aid/CPR, tool identification, framing, dry wall, plumbing and painting/flooring. The energy assessment curriculum includes reducing energy consumption, application of weather stripping, window installation and replacement, insulating pipes and hot water heaters, duct work, air sealing and blower door testing. (Blower doors are used to measure air leakage between the inside and outside of buildings.)
"We have great relationships with many contractors and want to give anyone looking for a career in green technology a chance," said Dorian Gaskin, Executive Director of The OutSource Center. "Green technology is the future, and we want to prepare people for jobs that are coming as opposed to jobs of the past. We're grateful for the opportunity NYSERDA has given us because it enables us to introduce people to new technology in the building trade."
Continuing its commitment to build a skilled workforce for green jobs, NYSERDA is providing $60,548 through its Workforce Development Training Partnerships for Energy Efficiency Program (PON 1816) to fund The OutSource Center's energy efficiency training efforts.
