Washington State Patrol DUI emphasis runs through July 8

The Washington State Patrol began its DUI emphasis on Friday, June 29, and will be continuing it through Sunday, July 8, to cover both the Fourth of July holiday and the following weekend.

"We have 50 different troopers on our schedule and pulled over 38 motorists for DUI within the first two days of our emphasis within this district alone," said Washington State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary, who's based in Marysville. "While we're mainly concerned with the Fourth of July, we're also aware that the following weekend is forecast to have perhaps the nicest weather of the year."

While Leary has no issue with people celebrating the holiday and weekend by attending parties and partaking of alcoholic beverages, he urged those partygoers to stay safe and not drive while impaired.

"We hope folks enjoy the day off and the weekend, especially if it's 80 degrees outside like they're saying, but we also want to make sure they're making the right decisions," Leary said. "You can have fun, but you should be responsible in whatever you do, not only because we'll be out there, but also because you don't want to have an accident that will ruin your fun."
