It looks like Secretary of State Clinton and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon are going to have to get along after all without the help of former state Sen. Vincent (Uncle Vinnie) Leibell.

Blame falls on Federal Judge Warren Eginton for depriving the world of the diplomatic and nation-building services that Leibell offered up in his visionary alternate-sentencing proposal.

Surely you recall his self-sacrificing generosity.

Exposed as a kickback artist after 28 years in Albany, Leibell told Eginton he would be willing to serve as a Middle East envoy, as doing so would be more productive than sitting behind bars for up to two years.

How heartfelt can a guy get? Why, Leibell went so far as to tell Eginton he was ready to pitch in even though he didn?t know a word of Arabic. Imagine that!

Eginton couldn?t. So, on the very day George Mitchell announced he is stepping down as President Obama?s Mideast envoy, the judge went and put Leibell in a striped suit, rather than striped pants, for 21 months. God save the Republic.
