Jimmy Fallon gets first PS4 handson, plays some Killzone Shadow Fall video

First things first: We still haven't seen the PlayStation 4. That said, if you'd like to see someone other than a Sony rep or developer putting their hands all over that DualShock 4 with touchpad and share button -- we asked, but apparently network TV still trumps internet -- then say no more. Managing Director of Guerilla Games Hermen Hulst came by the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon show with a prototype unit (not shown) loaded up with the Killzone: Shadow Fall demo we saw at the press conference. Jimmy and guest Anthony Anderson played a bit, with varying degrees of success and were predictably impressed by the new system, due to release by the end of this year. Unfortunately, there's no new information to be had, unless you wanted to know what the ceilings in the game look like (clearly, Anderson prefers to play shooters inverted). Watch the video embedded after the break, we're going to doublecheck ?uestlove's Instagram to see if he got any backstage or setup shots of the system behind the curtain.

Family Day at the BC Home & Garden Show {& a FLASH Giveaway ...

IMG 5766Today Gracen and I were lucky enough to be invited to check out Family Day at the BC Home & Garden Show at BC Place. ?Admittedly, we didn?t spend a whole lot of time browsing what most people come to the show to see (the home and garden exhibits obviously), but we definitely would have spent a whole lot more time down there if a) we owned a home and b) if we didn?t have plans to move overseas come August. ?From spa pools to lane way homes to landscaping and cleaning products, every topic pertaining to home owning/renovation/care was covered. ?

IMG 5762Where we spent most of our time was in the Kid Zone, set up especially for Family Day. ?Gracen had a wonderful time roaming around visiting all of the booths and was thrilled to see her favourite ever photographer, Bethany, from Images by Bethany at the Vancouvermom.ca booth. ?Bethany took some photos of her in front of a rainy day backdrop which are bound to be gorgeous, so I?ll be sure to share them when we get them back. ?Along the way, we picked up some Monkey Toast, learned about Kibooco, and did a little project at Beesafe. ?

IMG 5765One of the highlights was definitely having Miss G?s face painted by Kristal of Faceaballoonza. ?Grae selected a turtle and Kristal decorated her face with this gorgeously elaborate turtle painting in two minutes flat. ?

The BC Home & Garden Show continues tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday (22nd ? 24th) and they?ve generously given us two tickets adult tickets (a $30 value) to giveaway! ?Kids 12 and under get in for free, so this means the whole family can attend. ?

Passive Income With Kindle Publishing - ShoeMoney Internet ...

Kindle publishing has been a great way for affiliates to diversify their business. It?s not a magic bullet,? but it can provide consistent, stable income if done correctly. In the affplaybook.com forum we?ve been discussing how to approach Kindle publishing from a business perspective and not an affiliate perspective. There?s an important difference!

Publishing is one of those things that not many affiliates get right. That?s unfortunate because it has the potential to offer mostly passive income after the initial work is done. I wanted to give you some insights into getting started in this post.

What is Kindle Publishing?

Come on, really? ;) Kindle publishing is nothing more than selling a book on the Amazon marketplace. In short ? you write a book, publish it on Amazon, and collect the commissions. Of course, it isn?t quite that easy but still close.

An Affiliate Walked Into a Bar..

?to write a Kindle book?ok, I?m obviously not going to earn much money writing comedy books, but think about how an average affiliate would approach Kindle publishing. They would probably do something with spun content, PLR, cheap overseas writers, etc. To make up for the lack of quality, they would just do hundreds and hundreds of books.

This approach won?t work well, if at all. First, Amazon is pretty strict about the PLR thing. Second, real people will actually review your books. Your books probably won?t get a ton of reviews (at least initially) so if people see a 1 star review you can expect sales to grind to a halt. It?s also safe to assume that Amazon will become stricter on publishers in the future.

Kindle publishing is not something to do unless you are willing to put in the work to make it viable long term. This means (to some of you) it?s going to be boring, you won?t see a lot of money for a while, and it will feel like you aren?t making progress. This is something you build over time that has the potential to last ?forever? with almost no upkeep or maintenance.

What?s the potential?

Will you become a millionaire publishing books on Amazon? Doubtful. Can you make a very steady, and relatively easy 4 and maybe even 5 figures per month? Absolutely! It will take months to get there though. This isn?t like an affiliate campaign where you can hit your first $100/day in a short matter of time.

What do I write about?

You can write about literally anything, but some stuff works better than others. A novel might take you a long time to write, where a basic ?how-to? book might go much faster.

This is key ? You?re not trying to write one magic book to make all your sales. Some of your books will sell well, others will flop. You want to be constantly writing and publishing books. No one single book will generate enough sales to make it worth having just that one. Another benefit of writing lots of books is cross promotional possibilities. You can actually have a significant effect on your books exposure through various promotional efforts in the Kindle marketplace.

Spend some time researching what people write. Download some books and see how they?re structured, how long they are, etc. Keep in mind, a lot of the self published books are crap so don?t necessarily copy their style.

But I hate writing!

This is probably not what you want to hear, but it?s the truth ? you can outsource your writing but it?s not going to work well. The problem is that most books won?t make a ton on their own, so what you would have to pay to have something (of the quality it needs to be) written will be more than the book would potentially make for years.

That doesn?t mean you have to do all the writing yourself. You might be able to partner with someone and each do half, you might have a relative who?s a good writer, etc.

There are tools to make writing faster too, like Dragon Naturally Speaking. Once you get into a good writing rhythm, it actually doesn?t take that long to crank something out.

Not all books need to be super long. Spend some time looking at Kindle books, and you?ll discover some formats that enable you to put a book together relatively fast.

There is so much potential, not just with selling the books themselves but promoting products inside the books and building email lists. All that is stuff for a possible future post! In the meantime, you can read more about Kindle publishing here https://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishing/help

If this sounds interesting to you, I would encourage you to start writing and publishing books asap. You?ll look back on this post in 6 months and be glad you did.

House Bill 101 ? Repeal of Estate Tax

February 20, 2013

Thank you Mr. Chairman and members of the House Finance Committee

My name is Cedric Johnson and I serve as a public policy analyst with the NC Budget and Tax Center. Since its founding, the Budget and Tax Center has advocated for a state tax system that meets the principles of adequacy, equity and stability, and that allows the state to make adequate investments in public structures that provide the foundation for economic growth.

I stand before the committee today in opposition to House Bill 101. Repealing the estate tax will not address the problems with our tax system: that it is upside-down and inadequate to support the foundation of economic growth.? And repealing the estate tax will not improve economic outcomes.

First, less than one percent of North Carolina taxpayers are subject to the estate tax annually. For FY2010, only 123 taxpayers in North Carolina were subject to the estate tax and that number has dropped since then. It is worth noting that while House Bill 101 aims to provide a tax cut for a handful of estate beneficiaries, efforts are being made simultaneously to reduce the value of the Earned Income Tax Credit, which would impact over 900,000 individuals in North Carolina (House Bill 82).

Repealing the estate tax will reduce the availability of revenue for public investments. Nearly $300 million in lost state revenue over five years will result from the repeal, according to the Fiscal Research Division.

Regarding the common claim that the estate tax adversely impacts small family farms and businesses, research finds this claim to be untrue. The Tax Policy Center estimates that, for 2012, only 40 small businesses and farm estates nationwide owed any estate tax. For 2013, estates are allowed to exclude $5.25 million from respective estate values, with the estate tax applying to estate values that exceed this exclusion threshold. Accordingly, the number of small businesses and farms subject to the estate tax in North Carolina will likely decrease.

Regarding the claim that the estate tax amounts to double taxation for those few large estates that do owe estate taxes, a substantial proportion of their assets have never been taxed. Indeed, much of the assets in estates consist of untaxed capital gains ? that is, property, stocks, and bonds that have appreciated in value since they were first purchased by the decedent but have never been subject to tax.

Finally, the elimination of the estate tax is unlikely to usher in increased savings, migration to another state or increased growth.? A Congressional Research Service report found that the estate tax?s net impact on private saving is unclear ? it causes some people to save more and others to save less ? and that its overall impact on national saving (a critical determinant of the amount of capital available for private investment) is likely negative (as a result of eliminating the estate tax).

The envisioned tax cut from repealing the estate tax will not be fully realized because doing so will increase the amount of federal estate taxes owed. The value of an estate for federal estate tax purposes is reduced by the amount of state estate taxes paid. Thus, repealing the estate tax means that 40 percent of revenue raised from the estate tax would now go to the federal government ? and away from the state coffers.

Given the multiple reasons presented as to why repealing the estate tax represents flawed public policy, I urge members of the committee to give an unfavorable vote to House Bill 101. Thank you and I am happy to answer any questions.

Evolution of diversity surprisingly predictable

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Similar?or even identical?mutations can occur during diversification in completely separate populations of E. coli evolving over more than 1,000 generations, according to researchers at the University of British Columbia and the University of Montana.

The findings by UBC zoologist and mathematician Michael Doebeli and Matthew Herron, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Montana, will be published next week in the open access journal PLOS Biology.

The researchers allowed three populations of E. coli, each consisting of generalist bacteria competing for two food sources (glucose and acetate), to evolve independently. After 1,200 generations all three populations had evolved into two coexisting types, each with a specialized physiology adapted to one of the foods.

Herron and Doebeli sequenced the genomes of populations of bacteria frozen at 16 different points during their evolution, and discovered a surprising amount of similarity between independently evolving populations.

"Understanding the intricacies of diversification is important for understanding why there are so many species on Earth," says Doebeli.

"Not only did similar genetic changes occur, but the temporal sequence in which the changes occur over evolutionary time was also similar between the different evolving populations. This 'parallelism' implies that diversification is a deterministic process driven by natural selection."

Herron and Doebeli argue that a particular form of selection?negative frequency dependence?plays an important role in driving diversification. When bacteria are either glucose specialists or acetate specialists, a higher density of one type will mean fewer resources for that type, so bacteria specializing on the alternative resource will be at an advantage.

Recent advances in sequencing technology allowed Doebeli and Herron to sequence large numbers of whole bacterial genomes. As technology advances, they believe similar experiments in larger organisms will be possible.

Dow Chemical Ordered To Pay $400 Million In Price-Fixing Case

By Andrew Longstreth

(Reuters) - Dow Chemical Co on Wednesday was ordered by a federal jury to pay $400 million in a price-fixing case over chemicals used to make a wide range of foam products found in cars, furniture and packaging, according to court documents.

Dow was one of several chemical company defendants named in a class action lawsuit alleging a conspiracy to fix urethane chemical prices. But Dow was the only defendant not to settle. Last month, it went to trial in Kansas City, Kansas federal court.

The plaintiffs, purchasers of urethane chemicals, had sought more than $1 billion in damages.

If the $400 million verdict is sustained by the judge overseeing the case, it may be tripled under federal antitrust law.

David Bernick, an attorney for Dow, said that the company would seek to dismiss the lawsuit in a post-trial motion.

The plaintiffs had sought damages for a five-year conspiracy, noted Bernick. But the jury did not find Dow liable for the full five years, he said.

"We think it's very clear that the jury rejected the five-year class conspiracy claim and there was no other claim," Bernick said.

Joe Goldberg, an attorney for the plaintiffs, said he was pleased with the verdict.

"The people of Kansas administered justice, consistent with the evidence," Goldberg said.

Other defendants in the case have settled. In 2006 Bayer AG agreed to pay $55 million. In 2011 Huntsman International LLC agreed to pay $33 million and BASF Corp agreed to pay $51 million. In settling, none of the companies admitted any wrongdoing.

The case is In Re Urethane Antitrust Litigation, U.S. District Court, District of Kansas, 04-md-01616.
