Apple?s iPad continues to dominate the tablet market, so much so that other tablet manufacturers may be throwing in the towel, according to one report.
TechCrunch has the story, which cites a DigiTimes report that says component suppliers in Asia are seeing smaller orders from the likes of PC companies HP, Dell and Acer, suggesting that they?re having fewer tablets made. DigiTimes writes that the trouble is devices like the iPad, the Kindle Fire and the Nook Tablet. These devices are performing well in the tablet space, and the PC makers can?t seem to get any traction against them.
As TechCrunch points out, non-Apple tablets are facing the issue of too many competitors in the space. Using Google?s Android operating system doesn?t really set one tablet apart from another, since they all have basically the same content (although fragmentation among Android devices means not every app will work on every device). That means that, while a few devices are getting some brand recognition, like Samsung?s Galaxy Tab line, other devices have trouble distinguishing themselves.
Meanwhile, the iPad continues to offer a huge number of apps and, more than anything, a lot of brand recognition. The Kindle Fire and the Nook Tablet, on the other hand, offer alternatives for price-conscious customers.
Apple, Barnes & Noble and Amazon all have the right idea when they?re selling tablets. It?s about what the devices can do and what they offer, rather than the hardware itself. With Android devices, it?s hard to push one tablet over another when they all draw on the same content pool. Apple focuses on the things the iPad can do by showing off great apps for it whenever it goes to market. Remember the announcement of the iPad 2? That event was less about the iPad itself and more about the cool apps that could run on it, including Garage Band and iMovie. They demonstrated just how cool the iPad could be, and those were apps unavailable anywhere eles.
Amazon and Barnes & Noble use their tablets as delivery mechanisms for content like books, movies and music. Where Apple takes a more functional approach with the variety of things the iPad can do, the booksellers are trying to sell lower-cost, less-powerful alternatives, so they focus on the ways those tablets can get you content.
Setting a tablet apart from the pack, as Apple has realized, is all about what it can do and what people want. Since PC manufacturers haven?t determined how to make their entries stand out, it makes sense that those companies might be pulling back until they have a better business plan. But trying to play catch-up to Apple while the tech giant is setting the pace is a losing battle for everyone, and if the rumor is true, some device makers might be starting to realize that, finally.

The Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3 ($149.99 list) is?a motherboard intended for use with Intel's second-generation Core (aka "Sandy Bridge") processors using the LGA1155 socket.
It is equipped with the Z68 Express chipset, the most advanced and feature-rich of any in Intel's Sandy Bridge line.?Features of Z68 Express?include support for Intel's Smart Response Technology (SRT), which allows automatic caching of frequently used data on a solid-state drive (SSD)?to improve access times. An mSATA port located on the motherboard lets you add a small SSD to the motherboard to make use of this feature, without requiring you to install a larger one elsewhere in your system.
(Note:?The GA-Z68XP-UD3 does not come with an?SSD you can use?to take advantage of SRT.?The Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3 is an otherwise identical board that also comes with an mSATA SSD loaded with 20GB of SLC flash memory specifically for this purpose.)
Design and Features
Though Gigabyte has departed from its traditional blue-and-white color scheme in many of its recent motherboard models, the GA-Z68XP-UD3 uses it. It also conforms to the ATX form factor, and measures 9 by 12 inches (HW). In addition to a 24-pin connection to your power supply, it also requires an eight-pin 12V connection.
Expansion slots on the GA-Z68XP-US3 include one PCI Express?(PCIe) x16, one PCIe x18, three PCIe x1, and two PCI. (Unlike?some Sandy Bridge motherboards that utilize other Intel chipsets, the GA-Z68XP-UD3 has no support for integrated video.)?There are four 6Gbps SATA ports and four 3Gbps SATA ports for connecting hard drives or optical drives.
The GA-Z68XP-UD3's?rear-panel ports including one legacy PS/2 port (for keyboard and mouse), HDMI, eight USB 2.0, two USB 3.0, one FireWire, one S/PDIF out, and eight-channel analog audio. Additional onboard headers give you the option of connecting as many as two additional USB 3.0 ports, six USB 2.0 ports, and one FireWire port.

SANTA ANA, Calif. ? The board of directors of Crystal Cathedral Ministries announced Thursday that its preferred buyer for the megachurch's campus is the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange.
The announcement came just before a bankruptcy court hearing at which a judge was expected to decide between competing offers from the diocese and Chapman University.
The Catholic diocese wants the property for a cathedral of its own, while the university would use it to expand educational programs.
A board statement said it preferred terms of the $57.5 million Catholic bid for the Orange County cathedral, longtime home of the "Hour of Power" broadcast.
"The Catholic plan allows Crystal Cathedral ministry full and exclusive use of the Crystal Cathedral and the majority of the property for three years," it said.
In addition, the Family Life Center would be available for 18 months while temporary solutions are found to house programs for children and youth.
U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Robert N. Kwan has said he believes the bids from Chapman University and the diocese are both feasible options, and asked the Crystal Cathedral's board to state its preferred buyer at Thursday's hearing. The board previously favored the university's bid, which was raised Wednesday to $59 million.
Some Crystal Cathedral members fear their church will dwindle if the 40-acre grounds are sold to the diocese and they must move to a new location. They noted that congregants emptied their pockets to help build the elaborate building and many planned to be buried in the nearby cemetery.
Others fear the broadcast that funds 70 percent of the church's revenue will lose viewers if moved to a different, less striking setting.
"That's our church ? the Crystal Cathedral. We bought and paid for it," said Bob Canfield, a 73-year-old general contractor who joined the church five years ago. "We feel like we've been raped of our ministry."
For many congregants at the Crystal Cathedral, the church building designed by renowned architect Philip Johnson and made up of 10,000 panes of glass has become intertwined with the church's identity.
"They're no different than any other business. They have to market themselves, and they have a particular branding and they've put all their eggs in that basket," said Richard Flory, director of research at University of Southern California's Center for Religion and Civic Culture. "That would be a difficult transition for them to make."
Rev. Robert H. Schuller started the Southern California ministry as a drive-in church in the 1950s under the auspices of the Reformed Church in America. Decades later, the church evolved into an international televangelism empire and erected its now-famous building.
In 2008, the church's revenues plummeted amid a decline in donations and ticket sales for holiday pageants due to the recession, church officials said. But some experts say the church failed to attract younger members while alienating older churchgoers with an ill-fated attempt to turn the church over to Schuller's son, ending in a bitter and public family feud.
The church laid off employees and cut salaries, but its debts surpassed $43 million, prompting the Crystal Cathedral to declare bankruptcy last year.
Some congregants at the Crystal Cathedral said losing their church would be a sign of failure of the ministry's leadership and they wouldn't follow its leaders to a new site.

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) ? Police have discovered a "major cross-border drug tunnel" running to California from Mexico, and seized more than 17 tons (12,700 kilograms) of marijuana, U.S. and Mexican authorities said on Wednesday.
The tunnel measuring around 400 yards links warehouses in an industrial park south of San Diego and the Mexican border city of Tijuana, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency said.
U.S. federal agents made the discovery after police stopped a small cargo truck seen leaving a nondescript white warehouse building near the Otay Mesa port of entry on Tuesday afternoon, and arrested two men, ICE said.
A subsequent search of the warehouse found the entrance of the tunnel in the floor. It plunged more than 20 feet to the bottom of a shaft, meeting a passageway measuring approximately 4 feet by 3 feet, with structural supports, electricity and ventilation.
Agents with the San Diego Tunnel Task Force retrieved three tons of marijuana from the van. A subsequent search of the warehouse recovered an additional 6.5 tons of the drug. Mexican authorities said they found almost 8 tons of marijuana on the south side.
Tijuana is the principal gateway for tons of drugs entering California from Mexico. Last year, authorities uncovered two large tunnels linking the gritty industrial city with the strip flanking the border south of San Diego.
Measuring around 2,000 feet in length, they were equipped with rail systems, lighting and ventilation, and each discovery yielded multiple tons of marijuana.
'STOP AT NOTHING'
"The fact that this is the third sophisticated cross border tunnel found within a year's time demonstrates the cartels will stop at nothing to smuggle their drugs into the United States," said William R. Sherman, acting special agent in charge for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in San Diego.
"The seizure of marijuana coupled with the loss of yet another tunnel will deal a heavy blow to those responsible for constructing this tunnel," he added.
Evidence found inside the warehouse led investigators to believe the tunnel was only recently completed.
Mexican General Gilberto Landeros said many packets of the seized drugs were marked with a "Captain America" logo. Landeros said the tunnel was operated by the powerful Sinaloa cartel, headed by Mexico's most wanted man, Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman.
Mexico is in the grip of brutal drug cartel violence that has claimed more than 42,000 lives since President Felipe Calderon took office five years ago and sent the military to crush the powerful gangs.
The cartels have excavated scores of tunnels under the U.S.-Mexico border in recent years in a bid to beat ramped-up security at ports of entry and the rugged spaces in between. Nearly all of them linked cities on either side of Mexico's border with California and Arizona.
Authorities on Wednesday also reported the discovery of a much smaller drug tunnel running under the border to Arizona from Mexico's northern Sonora state.
That tunnel stretched for 70 feet from a drain in Nogales, Mexico, to an area beneath the porch of a house in the namesake city in Arizona, ICE said. Authorities also retrieved a number of excavating tools.

If you tell yourself that someone who's being mean is just having a bad day?it's not about you?you may actually be able to stave off bad feelings, according to a new study which will be published in an upcoming issue of Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.
Having someone angry at you isn't pleasant. A strategy commonly suggested in cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy is to find another way to look at the angry person. For example, you might tell yourself that they've probably just lost their dog or gotten a cancer diagnosis and are taking it out on you. Stanford researchers Jens Blechert, Gal Sheppes, Carolina Di Tella, Hants Williams, and James J. Gross wanted to study the efficiency and the speed of the process of reappraising emotions. "You can see this as a kind of race between the emotional information and the reappraisal information in the brain: emotional processing proceeds from the back to the front of the brain, and the reappraisal is generated in the front of the brain and proceeds toward the back of the brain where it modifies emotional processing" Blechert says.
Blechert and his colleagues came up with two experiments to study this process. Participants were shown several series of faces and tested on their reactions. For example, in one set, they were told to consider that the people they'd seen had had a bad day, but it's nothing to do you with you. "So we trained the participants a little bit, not to take this emotion personally, but directed at someone else," Blechert says.
They found that, once people had adjusted their attitude toward someone, they weren't disturbed by that person's angry face the next time it appeared. On the other hand, when participants were told to just feel the emotions brought on by an angry face, they continued to be upset by that face. In a second study, the researchers recorded electrical brain activity from the scalp and found that reappraising wiped out the signals of the negative emotions people felt when they just looked at the faces.
Psychologists used to think that people had to feel the negative emotion, and then get rid of it; this research suggests that, if people are prepared, it's actually a much faster and deeper process.
"If you're trained with reappraisal, and you know your boss is frequently in a bad mood, you can prepare yourself to go into a meeting," says Blechert, who also works as a therapist. "He can scream and yell and shout but there'll be nothing." But this study only looked at still pictures of angry faces; next, Blechert would like to test how people respond to a video of someone yelling at them.
